Did You Know!FLOOR TILESCeramic wall tiles and floor tiles are great for use in any areas of the home and both can be used for floor tile and wall
tile installation because there are many design styles that will differ from each other. Ceramic tile material is not just great
for decoration but it has fantastic functionality in the way of durability, stain resistance, heat resistance and frost resistance.
Ceramic tiles are made from clay and many years ago, ceramic tiles were hand made by pressing the clay by hand, these
days there are more sophisticated ways of making ceramic tiles and many processes that go into it. The way they are
processed and manufactured makes them really strong and durable which makes them ideal for bathrooms and kitchens
whether that be for floor tile or wall tile installation.
Ceramic floor tiles and wall tiles are probably the most versatile
tiles because they are ideal for almost any application. The range
of styles and designs available are wide and there is almost every
tile design you can think of.
A real country style bathroom works very well with gold natural
tones and there are many natural stone style wall tiles in which to
choose from. Ceramic tiles come in many variations and can be
sourced in the style of natural stone which really adds to the
country style bathroom.
Always remember that ceramic wall tiles come in many different finishes ranging from matte wall tiles to polished and
gloss, each different finish will give a different over all design style and this is a personal choice.
The most important aspect of choosing wall tiles is to consider all options and there are certainly many. Always attempt
to source some samples and try them out in different locations, this gives you a good idea of the way the tiles will look
once installed. Ceramic wall tiles and floor tiles are completely versatile and a relatively cheap floor tile option when
considering the features they offer.
CCS Grout products feature a wide selection of semi-rigid epoxies and polyureas for filling control joints in concrete
floors--particularly industrial floors (for a reference standard, see ACI 302.1R). These semi-rigid products are designed to:
resist difficult environments, absorb heavy wheel loads, protect joint corners, prevent contamination of shrinkage cracks
and maintain esthetics. These products may also function as insulators for filling saw cuts after the insertion of wiring for
induction loops, traffic signals, and airport runway lighting (FAA P606 specification). For roadway (loop sealant)
applications, the epoxy control joint products may offer the best versatility and work on both asphalt and concrete.
Polyurea and epoxy selection factors include the impact loads, temperature ranges, substrate shrinkage, temperature
cycling movement, presence of moisture, and sawcut or joint preparation. Viscosities range from self-leveling liquids to
non-sag pastes.
AUGUST 2013
Also included in the CCS Grouts are the warm and cold weather segmental bonding pastes for joining sections of
precast segmental bridges. Designed for critical load bearing applications, these products feature high heat deflection
temperatures (HDTs) and exhibit excellent wet and damp substrate bonds. Capable of supporting sustained loads,
including seismic reinforcement and bolt grouting, the Dowel/Rebar/Bolt products are our highest performance pastes
and are designed to work over a wide range of ambient temperatures.
GROUTING FLOOR TILES Grouting is the process of filling the spaces between the tiles. The filler – grout – comes in powder form in premixed
colors. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to mix it. For a strong and colorfast grout, gets the right consistency using
the least amount of water possible. Mix thoroughly to minimize colour variation. Only make as much as you can use
before it begins to set. Keep any leftover dry grout for future repairs.
There are three basic requirements for a tile grout. To provide an attractive finish and colour To have a good physical performance
To be easily applied
Factors affecting the colourThere is nothing within the manufacturing process of the grout that can either cause or prevent colour variation within
the grout. The primary factors affecting colour are (a) the grout formulation (b) Mixing the grout (c) The application
technique (d) The cleaning off procedure.
Factors affecting the appearance/texture Absorbency of the tile and substrate Water content of the grout
Method of tooling and cleaning. Time between application of the grout and finishing
Time between mixing of the grout and application to the joints
Why does grout discolour? Grout discolors because of poor installation techniques, improper cleaning methods, Laitance and improperly cured
setting beds. Cooler differences can occur in different parts of an installation because the grout is allowed to cure at
different rates. Uneven curing causes uneven colour. Inconsistent mixing and installation techniques also causes
uneven colour.
AUGUST 2013
EfflorescenceEfflorescence is the movement of moisture upward through Portland cement beds and concrete slabs, resulting in a white
deposit of salts on the surface. Efflorescence causes grout discolouration. Prevent efflorescence by keeping the grout
surface free from standing waters or dampness. It may be treated with commercially available cleaners but care should
be exercised and the manufacturer’s instructions followed. In severe cases of discolouration, the grout may be raked out
and re-done, but as stated previously there is nothing in the grout itself that can cause the discolouration so this may not
solve the problem.
Common causes of grout discolourationDarker colour Lighter Colour
Absorptive tile Non-Absorptive tile (fully vitrified/porcelain)
Low humidity High humidity
Dry grout mix Wet grout mix
Late finishing process Early (wet) finishing process
Deep joints Shallow joints
Before starting to grout, check over all of the grout joints and make sure you use the grout joint scraper to scrape out
any excess thinset that has squeezed up between the tiles while you laid them. Also be sure to vacuum up all of the loose
bits left behind. Start by deciding where in the room you would like to start. Try to not work yourself into a corner or a
space where you need to walk across the areas you just grouted and are still not cured. You also do not want to do to
big of a area at a time or you will not be able to reach across it to sponge it clean later. So now you can put some dry
grout into the small clean container and add little amounts of water into it as you mix it by hand. I usually mix about 1
cup of powder at one time. You want a fairly dry but smooth mix that will still stick together but is not to crumbly. If it is
too wet, it will have less strength and usually shrink and crack as it dries. So like when you mixed the thinset to lay the
tiles, mix the grout, let it sit for 10 minutes and re-mix again before applying to the grout joints. The grout mixture should
remain workable for about 2 hrs but try to use it up quicker then that. If it sits for more than 10 minutes re-stir again.
TIP: Do NOT re-apply more water to already setting grout that is mixed in your container. This will only make the mix weaker.
If stirring the grout mix does not seem good enough to use, mix a new batch.
So now we can start applying the grout. Use the rubber grout float and force mixture into the joints working diagonally
when ever possible to keep from gouging the grout out of the joint as you work. Use the float to remove excess grout
from the tiles surfaces as you go. Apply the grout to an area you can easily reach with out having to walk over the are
you just grouted. After about 15 minutes of set time use a damp sponge to wipe tiles clean of excess grout, regularly
rinsing sponge out in bucket of clean cool water. I do each area twice before I move on to more grouting and will use
more than one sponge through the process of the whole room. Try to work diagonally while sponging as well, just like
when you where using the rubber float.
