USAO is one of the most unique and progressive universities in the nation. It is Oklahoma’s only public liberal arts college. As a liberal arts institution, we believe it is important that students always have before them the simultaneous experience of specialized and general learning. We believe it is important that they be challenged to relate their academic concentration to the broader realm of knowledge and that they be continually encouraged to develop meaningful and useful associations between diverse bodies of information. This is the meaning of interdisciplinary education, and it is what truly distinguishes the learning experience at USAO. Many of the classes are taught by faculty teams, where two, three and sometimes four instructors plan the course and teach it together. For example, “American Civilization” may be taught by a historian, philosopher and artist. “World Thought and Culture” could include a philosopher, sociologist and a literature professor. “Math in the Modern World” might involve a mathematician, computer scientist and musician. Instructors interact in dealing with complex topics, all bringing his or her particular academic concentration into a conversation of perspectives. This form of education is not easy. We intend that the rigors students face in interdisciplinary learning will result in significant personal growth and development. Difficulty is a necessary prerequisite of growth and development. Challenge is what interdisciplinary education is all about. It is what USAO is all about. USAO has one of the best-prepared faculties in the state to offer and help conquer this challenge. Now, almost 90 percent of professors have earned the highest degree available in their field. In 2011, USAO joined the prestigious list of “National Liberal Arts Colleges” in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking — the only institution in Oklahoma, public or private, to be included on this select, national list. The same list includes Trinity, Amherst, Swarthmore and hundreds of other respected, private liberal arts colleges. USAO also received an ‘A’ grade from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) for the strength of its IDS curriculum, making it one of only 19 universities nationwide to score this near perfect score. As of fall 2011, no institution in Oklahoma has higher admission standards. This is only one of the ways this institution is being transformed by its 10-year Mission Enhancement Plan. In addition to the unique curriculum, USAO is a National Historic District and is the only college or university in Oklahoma to be on the National Register of Historic Places. It was given this status because of its history and the preservation of numerous original buildings on campus. Originally founded as Oklahoma College for Women in 1908, the school was the first college created by Oklahoma’s first Legislature. Additionally, it was one of only seven colleges nationwide created with the mission of catering to women. Along with a rich history, USAO has the oldest original mission of any state college of university. Its original motto states:

abOut the unIverSIty

Not for livelihood but for life.

In 2000, John Feaver was named the 12th President of USAO, and since then the institution has been named among the top public colleges in America by U.S. News and World Report, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine and the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. Feaver’s Mission Enhancement Plan seeks to establish USAO’s reputation as an affordable, high-quality, public liberal arts education. Its 51-hour core curriculum is like none other in Oklahoma, aimed entirely at producing creative, entrepreneurial graduates who think critically, globally and resourcefully. No other university in Oklahoma has higher admission standards than USAO. Feaver’s first major achievement as president was to earn national status for USAO as a National Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Before he became president, Feaver spent eight years on the faculty and 12 years as vice president for academic

affairs. Off campus, Feaver serves on the boards of Preservation Oklahoma, Oklahoma Academy for State Goals, Oklahoma Creativity Project and others in education and economic development. Statewide, he is recognized for his leadership on economic development issues, the liberal arts, creative and private funding strategies for higher education and the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. Feaver was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in October, joining a very short list of sitting presidents to be so honored. Feaver was a history instructor at the University of Oklahoma. He obtained his master’s degree from OU in European history with an emphasis in the Russian and Soviet area. Feaver completed the requirements for his doctorate in United States’ diplomatic history at OU in 1980.

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was well into its history before introducing its first sports teams in 1973 — teams that became known as the Drovers and the Droverettes, named after the rich heritage of cattle driving in the Chickasha area. Today, both teams are referred to as the Drovers. The athletic programs began when the school was still named Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It started with

baseball games, golf and ten-nis matches scheduled in the spring of 1973. The Drovers’ most prominent sport — bas-ketball — began in the fall of 1973. During that first year of bas-ketball, the Drovers borrowed uniforms in blue, gold and white. In the school’s second season, the OCLA Drovers

became the USAO Drovers, and new uni-forms in our trademark green and gold colors were ac-quired. The first Drover basketball games were set against Beth-any Nazarene College on Nov. 17, 1973. Two days later, on Nov. 19, then-Chickasha Mayor Samuel E. Evans declared “Drovers Day” as the university celebrated its first home game in Myers Fieldhouse, which is owned by Chickasha Public Schools. In 1981, the Drovers broke ground on the USAO Fieldhouse, which gave the teams a place to prac-tice and play in their own backyard. Phase I of the building was completed during the 1981-82 season. Three more phases added dressing rooms, training areas and a swim-ming pool. Long-time head basketball coach Brisco McPherson played for the first Drover basketball team and has been connected with the program ever since. In 1984, basketball star Gordon Musgrove earned the university’s first All-American honor. A few seasons later, in 1988, Herb Blunt became USAO’s first All-America First Team recipient and earned Player of the Year honors in the Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA’s District 9. In 2002, the men’s basketball team went on to claim the Drovers first NAIA National Championship, beating out conference rival Oklahoma Baptist 96-79. After a 17-year hiatus, baseball was reborn in 1994, when the USAO Board of Regents voted to expand US-AO’s sports programs to include baseball, softball and cross country. Long-time Drover supporter and USAO administrator Bill Smith donated his personal baseball memorabilia to auction off for funds to help re-establish the Drover baseball and softball programs. In 1995, he be-came the namesake of the Drovers’ ballpark. Both baseball and softball programs have served the university well, with baseball earning the Red River Con-ference North Division Championship in 1999 and softball claiming the SAC Championship in 2004. The softball pro-

gram earned three straight NAIA National Tournament ap-pearances in the mid-2000s. USAO proudly supported a tennis teams for years. In 1999, the women’s tennis team became the first in school history to win a regional championship. That year, both the men’s and women’s team’s qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. While the golf team served the college sporadically with pride for many seasons, it along with tennis, was discon-tinued in lean years. In 1998, the Drovers began the men’s and women’s soc-cer programs under Coach Jimmy Hampton. The Drover men have claimed numerous Sooner Athletic Conference championships and have been to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship tournament four times. In 2010 and 2011, the Drover men made it all the way to the quar-terfinals of the tournament, making history for the young program. In 2011, the Drover women’s soccer team competed in their first NAIA National Tournament and won the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title for the first time in the program’s history. Beginning in fall of 2012, the Drovers brought back cross country, which served the university a few seasons in the mid-1990s. USAO began play as part of a five-school group that started the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped out of the SAC in 1994 to join the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference. The Drovers played in the OIC for just four seasons before moving on to the Red River Athletic Con-ference. After only two seasons with the RRAC, USAO ap-plied for and was granted membership back into the SAC for the 2000-01 season. The Drovers have a rich history of winning and pro-ducing quality student-athletes. The university boasts 35 All-Americans, 55 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 191 All-Con-ference coaches and athletes throughout its history.

Jadyn SMIth-WallIShead cOach Another Oklahoma native and former NCAA Division I athlete Jadyn Smith-Wallis took over at the helm of the Drover softball team in August and begins her first season with USAO. After playing four years for Patty Gasso at the University of Oklahoma, Smith-Wallis went back to her high school alma mater, Newcastle, where she served as an assistant for two years. She joins USAO directly from Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma Baptist, where she served as pitching coach. “She comes very highly recommended,” Athletic Director Brisco McPherson said. “She was the best fit because of her expertise in pitching. That’s what set her apart from the other candidates.” While she doesn’t have prior head coaching experience, she has a game plan on how to run a program and how to continue USAO’s success. “I’m a small-town girl but I can bring the big program like one at the Uni-versity of Oklahoma into a smaller campus,” Smith-Wallis said. “The theme we are going to have is ‘Try to Keep Up’ — we want the other schools to try to keep up with us because we are going to work hard and keep pushing.” Smith-Wallis said her goal is to help transform student-athletes from teenagers to women, “like Coach (Patty) Gasso did for me.” “The biggest goal is have respectful girls come out of the program,” she said. “Some of my other goals are obviously to compete and keep up in the SAC conference and win a conference title.” In addition to her assistant coaching duties at OBU and previously at Newcastle, Smith-Wallis has had a pitching and skills clinic for 40 athletes a week for the last four years. She also has helped with the Josh Heupel ‘Day of Champions,’ where she has taught leadership skills and establishing trusting relationships since 2007. Smith-Wallis earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from OU in 2008. She lives in Blanchard with her husband, Greg Wallis.

Born: June 1, 1942Education: Central State College, 1972Coaching Career: Assistant Coach, USAO, since 2009 Volunteer Assistant, USAO, 2005-09 Coach, 18-under OKC Ultimate, 20 yearsInteresting Fact: Loves to watch Thunder basketball

Ken Richardson, a distinguished junior-league coach, begins his eighth season with the Drovers. Before becoming the assistant coach in 2009, Richardson spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant under former head coach Taralee Pringle. Richardson is now under his third coach at USAO with Coach Smith-Wallis. Richardson has coached the 18-under OKC Ultimate for the better part of two decades, qualifying for ASA National Tournament 18 times. During his coaching career, Richardson has coached about 150

future collegiate softball players, including two NCAA Division I All-Americans. His favorite part about coaching at USAO, Richardson said, is to watch the student-athletes improve their softball abilities while they continue their education and earn their degrees. Richardson retired from AT&T after 37 years with the company. He attended two years of AT&T Vocational Technology after attending Central State College, which is now known as the University of Central Oklahoma.

a neW hOPe fOr 2013 With nearly all returners and a fresh coach bring-ing new enthusiasm, the Drover softball team has a chance to make a strong impression in 2013. In her first season at the helm of a program, Head Coach Jadyn Smith-Wallis is confident the 2013 Drovers will be a force to be reckoned with this sea-son. “My expectations for this year are to compete to the best of our ability and finish in the top of the conference,” she said. “These girls are more than capable of doing just that.” Nearly the entire 2012 squad is back for another season, minus last year’s lone senior Elizabeth Ag-palo and ace pitcher Neesha Sorrell, both of whom were strong assets to the team. Regardless of those two missing players, the en-tire infield and outfield have returned for another season. “Our age is a strength that will be at our advantage with the maturity I have on the field,” Smith-Wallis

said. “I wouldn’t say we have any specific weakness-es. We are just works in progress.” The only new face, besides catcher Mindi Locke who was on medical redshirt last season, is Brittney DeWitt, who joined the team as a pinch runner this winter. DeWitt, a freshman, runs cross country at USAO. While most of the team could fit under the catego-ry of “key returners,” two in particular are All-Con-ference Second Teamer Taylor Smith and Chelsea Zuchnik, who earned the SAC Gold Glove honor. Smith, the team’s starting shortstop, scored 18 runs and was second on the team in runners batted in with 26 in 2012. Zuchnik, a senior outfielder, had a perfect fielding percentage last season with 62 putouts and three as-sists without a single error. “Our biggest strength as a unit is our defense,” Smith-Wallis said. “I would match our defense up against anyone. We are scrappy and quick, and that’s what it will take to win ball games for us this year.” The Drovers may struggle in growing pains in the circle with just two pitchers on the roster. Morgan Bratcher — formerly Morgan Singleton — had an ERA of 2.79 last season and earned five wins for the Drovers. She threw 37 strikeouts. The team’s other pitcher is Brooke McLeod, who is in her third season at USAO. She has a career ERA of 4.20 and has thrown 61 strikeouts and earned seven wins. “I think that things will shape up great if we — as a unit — mold together,” Smith-Wallis said. Always competing in a tough softball conference, two Sooner Athletic Conference opponents —Lub-bock Christian and Oklahoma City — are ranked in the NAIA Top 5 in preseason polls. Saint Gregory’s falls not too far behind at 16. Three conference opponents have left the SAC since last season. Those teams are Southern Naza-rene, Oklahoma Christian and Northwestern OSU. The Drovers are projected to finish fifth in the conference. They ended the 2012 season sixth. But Smith-Wallis plans for her Drovers to come in even stronger this year. “If we show our strengths every game, we will fin-ish much higher than fifth and will be in the NAIA Top 25,” Smith-Wallis said. “My goals for this season are to finish in the top of the conference, gel together as a team and make it to a regional and then on to na-tionals.”
