ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW

Success is nothing new for the Bloomsburg University soft-ball team. The team has a streak of 30 consecutive years of reaching the NCAA playoffs. Head coach Susan Kocher feels good about the prospects of that streak continuing in 2013 when she looks at the balance up and down the roster.

The Huskies, coming off a 35-16 season return a strong number one pitcher, good power throughout the lineup and a strong defensive team; all the ingredients for a suc-cessful season.

“We have a solid lineup led by an experienced senior class along with a very good group of juniors,” said Kocher, now in her third season as head coach. “Pitcher Cait Paine is fully recovered from a season-ending injury suffered during last year’s post-season. We (Bloomsburg coaches) expect her to have another big year.”

“Also, our sophomores and juniors got their feet wet last year in the post-season and are anxious to get back there and go even further this season,” Kocher added. “We are also excited about our seven freshmen as they add strength and depth to the team.”

PITCHERSPaine will lead the staff for the Huskies after being named the PSAC Central Division Pitcher of the Year and Dak-tronics All-Region in 2012. A year ago Paine was 24-10 with a career-high 304 strikeouts in 228.1 innings pitched.

Rounding out the pitching staff will be junior Mandi Black, sophomore Caitlin O’Connor and freshman Brianna Tay-lor. Black was 7-5 a year ago while appearing in 20 games. She is a hard worker who had one shutout and seven

complete games as a sophomore. O’Connor was 4-1 with 28 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched in limited action a year ago. She may also see time at first base as she has a good glove and is a strong hitter. Taylor had a great fall, but has missed the early portion of the spring due to an injury.

INFIELDThe Huskies have a veteran infield with three of the four positions featuring a returning starter. At first base Rachel Fredell is back after hitting .301 with a homer and 29 RBI last season. Fredell can also play third base if needed. Be-hind Fredell will be freshman Leann Bell.

At second base Mandi Baer has been a two-year starter for the Huskies. As a sophomore Baer hit .352 with a homer and 19 RBI and scored 41 runs. Backing up Baer will be freshman Valerie Carcasses, a left-handed hitter who brings speed to the lineup.

At shortstop look for a combination of Chrissy Belko and Erika Yanora. Belko hit 10 homers a year ago and drove in 36 runs while also banging out 10 doubles. Yanora, the 2012 PSAC Central Division Freshman of the Year, hit .312 with a homer and 21 RBI. She also scored 32 runs and had seven doubles and three triples. With Belko and Yanora’s ability to play the outfield, Kocher may have both players in the lineup at the same time.

The big question mark for the Huskies will be at third base where three players will be in the mix for time. Black, Kayla McHale and Cheyanne Bates are all competing for the spot. All three are fundamentally sound, possess quick-ness and bring solid bats to the lineup.

2013 SEASON PREVIEW

OUTFIELDIn the outfield senior Raychelle Kuhns, an All-PSAC Central Division player last year returns as one of the top defensive outfielders in the PSAC. Kuhns features great range and a strong arm and had a solid year at the plate hitting .287.

Juniors Hannah Moir and Lyndsay Busler will also see time in the outfield as well as freshmen Erica Keen and Megan Freter. Moir hit .285 a year ago with 19 RBI and is funda-mentally sound. Busler, who can also catch, has a strong arm and brings an explosive bat to the lineup.

CATCHERAlong with Busler and McHale, Lea Rehm is a freshman who will see time behind the plate. Rehm is a lefty thrower with very good defensive skills.

“This group of players knows what is needed to get back to the post-season,” said Kocher. “With better depth on this team, good speed and strong fundamentals we should be again battling for a playoff spot. Each year there is more parity among teams in the division and no team can be overlooked. Our team needs to play its best each time they take the field.”

Susan KocherHead Coach • 3rd Season at Bloomsburg

Career Record: 68-25 (.731) Two Years Record at BU: Same

Susan Kocher begins her third season as head coach of the Huskies in 2013 after be-ing named the head coach in July of 2010. Kocher replaced the legendary coach Jan Hutchinson who retired at the end of the 2010 season after 33 years of coaching. In

Kocher’s first two seasons as head coach she guided the Huskies to 68 wins and two NCAA playoff berths.

The 2012 season produced a runner-up finish in the PSAC Championships and a sixth seed in the Atlantic Two re-gional bracket of the NCAA Championships. Kocher coached five players to All-PSAC Central honors including the Central Division’s player, pitcher and freshman of the year; it was the first time since 2007 that a team in any of the PSAC divisions claimed all three major awards. She also coached three All-Region selections and a third team NFCA All-American in Sam Pientack.

Three of Kocher’s athletes set school records during the 2012 season. Pientack broke the school’s 12 year-old home-run record as she hit 20 long balls. Cait Paine fanned 18 batters in a single game two times, tying a 17 year-old school record; her 18 strikeouts also tied the PSAC record. Chrissy Belko tied a 10 year-old school record for single game homers with three.

Kocher spent 23 years as an assistant after playing four years for Hutchinson. Combined she has been part of 1,104 wins as both player and coach.

As an assistant coach Kocher was an integral part of the Huskies great success over the last two decades. As head coach and as the Huskies pitching coach she has coached 10 players to 12 All-American selections, including 2010 second team All-American Shavaun Fisher, who posted 35 wins, second most all-time for a single season in school history. In addition, under Kocher’s watch 32 no-hitters, six of them perfect games, were tossed while she served as the pitching coach.

A two-time All-American herself and three-time All-PSAC selection as a pitcher at Bloomsburg, Kocher is the only pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter on the same day.

In addition, she had a career record of 71-13 and boasted an earned run average of 0.47. She struck out 485 batters and threw nine no-hitters for the Huskies, including two perfect games. At the plate, she had a fine career as a hitter, with 71 RBI and 65 runs scored.

A 1987 graduate of Bloomsburg University, Kocher was inducted into the Bloomsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. She is a native of Camp Hill, PA and graduated from Cedar Cliff High School where she was an ASA All-American.

Dee WolfeAssistant Coach • 3rd Season at Bloomsburg

Wolfe begins her third season as the Huskies assistant coach in 2013. She spent the last five seasons as a volunteer assistant with the team after playing for the Huskies for four seasons.

As a player with the Huskies Wolfe was a three-time All-PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) selection, including twice as a first team choice; and was also named All-Region once by the National Fastpitch Coaches Asso-ciation. She finished her career with seven homers and 95 runs batted in, 12th best mark in school history. Her best season came as a senior in 2005 when she hit .401 with four homers and 42 RBI and a team-high 20 doubles. As a junior she had a homer and 31 RBI.

“Heading into her third season as an assistant coach, Dee has proven to be a solid hitting and catching instructor who is well respected by our players,” Bloomsburg head coach Susan Kocher said. “In addition, she has been instrumental in expanding our winter development clinics to include catching and infield sessions. Dee and I work well together and we are excited for the 2013 season.”
