USAO is one of the most unique and progressive universities in the nation. It is Oklahoma’s only public liberal arts college. As a liberal arts institution, we believe it is important that students always have before them the simultaneous experience of specialized and general learning. We believe it is important that they be challenged to relate their academic concentration to the broader realm of knowledge and that they be continually encouraged to develop meaningful and useful associations between diverse bodies of information. This is the meaning of interdisciplinary education, and it is what truly distinguishes the learning experience at USAO. Many of the classes are taught by faculty teams, where two, three and sometimes four instructors plan the course and teach it together. For example, “American Civilization” may be taught by a historian, philosopher and artist. “World Thought and Culture” could include a philosopher, sociologist and a literature professor. “Math in the Modern World” might involve a mathematician, computer scientist and musician. Instructors interact in dealing with complex topics, all bringing his or her particular academic concentration into a conversation of perspectives. This form of education is not easy. We intend that the rigors students face in interdisciplinary learning will result in significant personal growth and development. Difficulty is a necessary prerequisite of growth and development. Challenge is what interdisciplinary education is all about. It is what USAO is all about. USAO has one of the best-prepared faculties in the state to offer and help conquer this challenge. Now, almost 90 percent of professors have earned the highest degree available in their field. In 2011, USAO joined the prestigious list of “National Liberal Arts Colleges” in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking — the only institution in Oklahoma, public or private, to be included on this select, national list. The same list includes Trinity, Amherst, Swarthmore and hundreds of other respected, private liberal arts colleges. USAO also received an ‘A’ grade from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) for the strength of its IDS curriculum, making it one of only 19 universities nationwide to score this near perfect score. As of fall 2011, no institution in Oklahoma has higher admission standards. This is only one of the ways this institution is being transformed by its 10-year Mission Enhancement Plan. In addition to the unique curriculum, USAO is a National Historic District and is the only college or university in Oklahoma to be on the National Register of Historic Places. It was given this status because of its history and the preservation of numerous original buildings on campus. Originally founded as Oklahoma College for Women in 1908, the school was the first college created by Oklahoma’s first Legislature. Additionally, it was one of only seven colleges nationwide created with the mission of catering to women. Along with a rich history, USAO has the oldest original mission of any state college of university. Its original motto states:

abOut the unIverSIty

Not for livelihood but for life.

In 2000, John Feaver was named the 12th President of USAO, and since then the institution has been named among the top public colleges in America by U.S. News and World Report, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine and the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. Feaver’s Mission Enhancement Plan seeks to establish USAO’s reputation as an affordable, high-quality, public liberal arts education. Its 51-hour core curriculum is like none other in Oklahoma, aimed entirely at producing creative, entrepreneurial graduates who think critically, globally and resourcefully. No other university in Oklahoma has higher admission standards than USAO. Feaver’s first major achievement as president was to earn national status for USAO as a National Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Before he became president, Feaver spent eight years on the faculty and 12 years as vice president for academic

affairs. Off campus, Feaver serves on the boards of Preservation Oklahoma, Oklahoma Academy for State Goals, Oklahoma Creativity Project and others in education and economic development. Statewide, he is recognized for his leadership on economic development issues, the liberal arts, creative and private funding strategies for higher education and the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. Feaver was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in October, joining a very short list of sitting presidents to be so honored. Feaver was a history instructor at the University of Oklahoma. He obtained his master’s degree from OU in European history with an emphasis in the Russian and Soviet area. Feaver completed the requirements for his doctorate in United States’ diplomatic history at OU in 1980.

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was well into its history before introducing its first sports teams in 1973 — teams that became known as the Drovers and the Droverettes, named after the rich heritage of cattle driving in the Chickasha area. Today, both teams are referred to as the Drovers. The athletic programs began when the school was still named Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It started with

baseball games, golf and ten-nis matches scheduled in the spring of 1973. The Drovers’ most prominent sport — bas-ketball — began in the fall of 1973. During that first year, the Drover basketball teams bor-rowed uniforms in blue, gold and white. In the school’s second season, the OCLA

Drovers became the USAO Drovers, and new uniforms in our trademark green and gold colors were acquired. The first Drover basketball games were set against Beth-any Nazarene College on Nov. 17, 1973. Two days later, on Nov. 19, then-Chickasha Mayor Samuel E. Evans declared “Drovers Day” as the university celebrated its first home game in Myers Fieldhouse, which is owned by Chickasha Public Schools. In 1981, the Drovers broke ground on the USAO Fieldhouse, which gave the teams a place to prac-tice and play in their own backyard. Phase I of the building was completed during the 1981-82 season. Three more phases added dressing rooms, training areas and a swim-ming pool. Long-time head basketball coach Brisco McPherson played for the first Drover basketball team and has been connected with the program ever since. In 1984, basketball star Gordon Musgrove earned the university’s first All-American honor. A few seasons later, in 1988, Herb Blunt became USAO’s first All-America First Team recipient and earned Player of the Year honors in the Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA’s District 9. In 2002, the men’s basketball team went on to claim the Drovers first NAIA National Championship, beating out conference rival Oklahoma Baptist 96-79. After a 17-year hiatus, baseball was reborn in 1994, when the USAO Board of Regents voted to expand US-AO’s sports programs to include baseball, softball and cross country. Long-time Drover supporter and USAO administrator Bill Smith donated his personal baseball memorabilia to auction off for funds to help re-establish the Drover baseball and softball programs. In 1995, he be-came the namesake of the Drovers’ ballpark. Both baseball and softball programs have served the university well, with baseball earning the Red River Con-ference North Division Championship in 1999 and softball claiming the SAC Championship in 2004. The softball pro-

gram earned three straight NAIA National Tournament ap-pearances in the mid-2000s. USAO proudly supported men’s and women’s tennis teams for years. The women’s tennis team in 1999 became the first in school history to win a regional championship. That year, both the men’s and women’s team’s qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. While the golf team served the college sporadically with pride for many seasons, it along with tennis, was discon-tinued in lean years. In 1998, the Drovers began the men’s and women’s soc-cer programs under Coach Jimmy Hampton. The Drover men have claimed numerous Sooner Athletic Conference championships and have been to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship tournament four times. In 2010 and 2011, the Drover men made it all the way to the quar-terfinals of the tournament, making history for the young program. In 2011, the Drover women’s soccer team competed in their first NAIA National Tournament and won the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title for the first time in the program’s history. Beginning in fall of 2012, the Drovers brought back cross country, which served the university a few seasons in the mid-1990s. USAO began play as part of a five-school group that started the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped out of the SAC in 1994 to join the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference. The Drovers played in the OIC for just four seasons before moving on to the Red River Athletic Con-ference. After only two seasons with the RRAC, USAO ap-plied for and was granted membership back into the SAC for the 2000-01 season. The Drovers have a rich history of winning and pro-ducing quality student-athletes. The university boasts 35 All-Americans, 55 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 191 All-Con-ference coaches and athletes throughout its history.

MIke rOSShead cOach The kinks have been worked out. The newness has worn off. And the legacy has started. Now, it’s just about the baseball. Head coach Mike Ross is now entering his fifth year at the helm of USAO’s baseball program — after serving as an assistant coach for the previous four years — so there are no more surprises for him. After assisting long-time head coach L.J. Powell, Ross served a season co-head coaching with Powell before taking over as head coach alone in 2010. Each year since being named head coach, Ross has logged a winning season. In February of 2012, Ross celebrated his 100th win in a victory over No. 1 Oklahoma City at home at Bill Smith Ballpark. During the season as a co-head coach, Powell and Ross took the Drov-ers to their best record in school history, and Ross followed it a year later with the program’s third best season. Numerous players set school records and two were named All-Sooner Athletic Conference athletes.

As a head coach, Ross has seen 10 All-Conference athletes and a Da-ktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete from the program. At USAO, Ross helped Powell turn the program around from one of the team’s worst years to one of the school’s best finishes. Ross was the coaching assistant from 2005-08 and was a student as-sistant at USAO from 2000-02. Before re-joining Powell at USAO in 2005, Ross spent three years as an assistant coach at Vernon College,

where he helped lead the Chaparrals to 30-plus wins two seasons in a row. He had brief stints coaching a premier league summer team in Burkbur-nett, Texas, and as an assistant coach in the 2004 Junior Olympic trials before finding his way back to his alma mater. Ross is a 2002 USAO grad-uate. As a player, Ross helped take Redlands Community College to become conference and regional champions and finish fifth in the JUCO World Series in 1995. The following year, Ross moved to Graceland University, where he played for three seasons, two of which he served as team cap-tain. He set the school record for saves in both the 1998 and 1999 seasons and was named All-Conference in 1999. Ross earned his bachelor’s degree in history from USAO in 2002 and achieved a master’s of sports science in sports coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2009. He lives in Chickasha with his wife, Robyn, their 5-year-old son, Brody, and 1-year-old son, Bryce.

Just five years after he graduated from USAO, Sam Hayden is back as the assistant baseball coach and is eager to help the program continue to make a strong presence in one of the toughest conferences in the league. Not only did he earn his bachelor’s degree from USAO, but also USAO provided him with his first coaching opportunity — something he imme-diately fell in love with. Hayden was a student assistant for the Drover baseball team in 2007 while he was finishing up his degree. Before that, he spent two years at catcher at Wayland Baptist and two years at Vernon College. All-in-all, Hayden has seven years

of coaching experience to bring back to USAO. Hayden joins the Drovers from Sul Ross State University, where he served as the assistant baseball coach for two years. Prior to that po-sition, he was the baseball assistant at the University of the Southwest. Hayden earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from USAO in 2007 and his master’s de-gree in health, physical education and recreation from Emporia State University in 2010. Hayden is married to Jennifer Hayden, USAO’s head women’s basketball coach. Together, they have a daughter, Carlie.

key tO 2013: a GrOuP effOrt The 2013 Drover baseball season presents new chal-lenges, but a lot of the same great baseball action with a group of players already familiar with the program and the conference. Head Coach Mike Ross said that while he expects a pretty good season out of the Drovers, he doesn’t like to put lofty expectations on the team’s performance so early in the year. “To put expectations on them in January isn’t really fair. You don’t know everybody’s role yet,” he said before the season began. “We’ll just go out and compete and see where we finish. Hopefully it’s enough to get us in to the conference tournament and then the national tourna-ment.” With 16 seniors and most of the team returning from last season, Ross said he won’t be looking to any one or two players to lead the team. “There’s a great group of seniors who know what the league is like. Their expectations for each other are high. I don’t expect one or two of them to lead the team. It’s a group effort, and they understand that,” he said. “They understand if they all go out and do their job, it’s a suc-cessful season.” Ross said it is hard to predict how the team will look this season. While the team has potential to be stronger than those in previous seasons, changes in the conference have led to additional games against some of the nation’s best. With Oklahoma Christian, Southern Nazarene and Northwestern Oklahoma State moving up to NCAA Di-vision II, the Sooner Athletic Conference is down to just eight teams in baseball. This led the conference to convert from a three-game series made up with a nine-inning game and two sev-en-inning games to a four-game series of two sets of doubleheaders, with each game being seven innings. “It will be different coaching in it, and it will be difficult playing in it,” Ross said. “Our biggest weakness is that we haven’t had to play four-game series before. It’s hard to stay hooked up for a doubleheader every day.” The Drovers have four conference opponents in the NAIA Preseason Top 25, including (4) Oklahoma City, (5) Rogers State, (10) Oklahoma Baptist and (16) Lubbock Christian. “It’s going to be an interesting year,” Ross said. “I think the conference is going to be tougher, honestly. You’ve added games against some of the highest caliber teams in the nation.” The preseason conference poll, voted on by conference coaches, placed USAO fifth, which is where they ended the 2012 season. That season, the Drovers earned a re-cord of 28-21, going 17-13 in the SAC. “We have a good club. I expect them to be competitive. We were voted to finish fifth, but I expect more than that of them,” Ross said.

One of the team’s new faces is Assistant Coach Sam Hayden, who took over for Matt Hibbitts this summer when Hibbitts left to focus on earning his master’s degree as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico. Hayden is a USAO graduate who coached the 2007 season as a student assistant. The Drovers graduated just four starters in centerfield-er Romus Cezar, catcher Blake Taylor, outfielder Newt Compton and designated hitter Brandon Jewett. Taylor split time behind the plate with Owen Adams, who is re-turning as a redshirt sophomore. Just two of the Drovers pitchers are returning confer-ence starters from last season. David Garcia, a senior from New Mexico, has pitched for the Drovers the last two years. He had the lowest earned run average (3.93) on the 2012 team and allowed just 23 earned runs in 197 batters faced. Seth Sturgeon, USAO’s other returning starting pitcher, had the next lowest ERA (4.27) and had the team’s most wins, completing the season with a record of 7-1. “Blake McMullen is going to have to step up this year and be a starter for us,” Ross said. “We need Seth Stur-geon to have another good year on the mound. As well, I expect big things from Simon Mitchell and David Garcia on the mound. Today, those are probably our four start-ers.” Returners Josh Goodman, Clinton Selman and Jacob Crase will be Ross’ leaders out of the bullpen, with new-comers Chris Fischer, Aaron Copfer and Arnold Gomez and returners Dakota Blanchard and Josh Terrell filling in the gaps and rounding out the pitching staff. Three of the Drovers’ key returners are All-Conference athletes Jared Coon, Heath Wilda and Zach Gonzalez. Coon, who will likely play left field, led the team in bat-ting average of .402 and nearly every other offensive cat-egory. Wilda, the starting third baseman, batted a .394 and came in 10th in the NAIA in doubles per game. First baseman Gonzalez scored 31 runs for the Drovers and batted in another 38. Other players Ross expects to start again this season are shortstop Konrad Mueller, center fielder Brian Vigo and second baseman Robert Summers. Blake Pruett, a senior from Saginaw, Texas, will likely play right field, Ross said. “On the field, I don’t see anywhere where we are weak in any particular place,” Ross said. “Our strength is our senior class. We have a bunch of guys who were here last year, who were in the league and know what is expected of them.” Ross said his biggest request of his players is to live up to their potential and play like a team. “I expect them to go out and play hard every day and to have confidence in themselves and their teammates and go out and compete,” he said. “If we do what we are capable of, it will be a good year.”
