Seven Reasons Why Twitter Can Make You Happy

1 We’ve all seen how Twitter can play an unprecedented role in world events and

in news communication. But on a very personal, routine level, there are several other

ways in which Twitter can boost your happiness.

2 Twitter allows you to pursue your passion—even if only in your

imagination.

3 A key to a happier life is to have fun—people who regularly have fun are twenty

times as likely to feel happy. But if you can’t find the time, or if you’d like to spend

even more time on your passion than you do, Twitter is a great source of conversation

and ideas.

4 Twitter distracts you if you’re feeling blue.

5 Studies show that distraction is a powerful mood-altering device. If you’re

following a bunch of people whose posts interest you, you can always count on finding

something that will catch your attention.

Page 20: Unit 2 Internet Section A Listening and Speaking Section B Text Learning Section C Skill Development

6 Twitter can get you laughing.

7 If you follow some people who are very funny, you can count on getting a little boost

when you need it. Reading 140 characters takes just a few seconds, but it’s enough to re-direct

your mood.

8 Twitter helps you maintain loose relationships and strengthen strong

relationships.

9 Can you really handle more than 150 friends? Maybe not. But whether or not you can

have more “friends,” technology certainly allows you to keep a better handle on

acquaintances. Far more than ever before, I’m vaguely aware of a huge number of people,

some of whom I “know” and some I don’t “know”, and although that sounds overwhelming, it

makes my life warmer and richer. Twitter, along with Facebook, blogs, Tumbler, and all the

rest, allows me

to keep a little connection with lots of people without much effort.

10 Twitter lets you help other people.

11 If you have friends who raise money for a charity, who write books or articles,

who perform music, who advocate for a cause, or otherwise want to direct attention s

omeplace—or if you want to help strangers who are doing these things—Twitter lets

you shine a spotlight on their activities or on issues that you think are important.

12 Twitter lets you share those funny little observations that float through

your head.

13 In the same way that carrying a camera sharpens your eye, knowing that you

can communicate your clever apercus makes you more observant and wittier.

14 Twitter makes gathering information easier.

15 If you follow people who share your passion, they’ll help you keep abreast of

every thing happening in that area. And if you have a general question, crowd-sourcin

g it to Twitter is a great way to get an answer. Most of all, Twitter is a super-

efficient way to find out what other people find interesting.

16 These are ways that Twitter can boost your happiness. But Twitter also has o

ne major drawback for happiness: it may eat up your time so that you have less time

for face-to-face encounters with real people.

What Are These Numbers

1 Do you know what the following numbers mean:“7456”,“246”and“995”? Or ca

n you tell the meaning of these English letters such as“GG”, “GF”and “PLMM” ? Do

not lose your self-confidence if you can’t answer these questions. They are actually not

a test of your intelligence and wisdom but kind of quiz of your practical knowledge or

skill in so-called Internet language. In fact, even experienced Chinese linguists and lon

g-standing Chinese teachers are unable to understand the new language, commonly

used in online Chinese-language chat rooms.

2 The language is becoming more and more popular among the country’s more th

an 87 million Internet users, especially young Internet surfers. It contains Chinese char

acters mixed with English letters and words, images, symbols and numbers. These co

mputer words are roughly classified into four kinds—the number, Chinese character,

letter and sign parts.

Page 51: Unit 2 Internet Section A Listening and Speaking Section B Text Learning Section C Skill Development

Text B

3 For example, 7456 is pronounced as qi si wo le (I’m very angry), 246 as e si le (I’

m very hungry) and 995 as jiu jiu wo (save me).“GG”means ge ge (elder brother) while

“GF”means girlfriend. PLMM is spelled out as piao liang mei mei, meaning beautiful girl

s; kong long (dinosaur) and qing wa (frog) refer to ugly people and :) means

a smiling face while (:- refers to a broken heart.

4 Some think Internet language is plain and humorous. The public hold two

different kinds of attitudes towards the use of Internet language. Some think, since it is

used in a very limited area, Internet language has little bad effect. They say the

emergence of Internet language is a normal phenomenon and a necessary stage in the

development of

Chinese.

5 Others, however, think that Internet language is“inappropriate” and “irresponsibl

e”. They stress that too much use of Internet language will finally undermine standard us

e of Chinese and even endanger its purity. Educators share the view and warn that young

people, especially primary and middle school students, may fall victim to

Internet language, such as troubles in communication.

6 Meanwhile, more parents express deep worry about the“digital gap”between them

and their teenage children, who prefer to use Internet language to show off their personali

ty.“Is it normal that we cannot even understand what my son says?”, a father

said.
