Coco Chanel—the Most Beautiful and Successful Woman in the Fashion World

1 There is no question in the fashion world that the most significant designer of the

20th century world is Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel was born in France in 1883. At

eighteen, Chanel worked as an assistant at a tailoring shop but expected to be a music

hall performer. Later, she opened a small shop to sell fashionable hats to ladies. As her

business grew she became a dressmaker and created her own style in clothing. The

Chanel style has everything to do with elegance, comfort, ease and practicality. Among

her design innovations, her trademarks were the use of jersey, and imitation jewelry,

consisting of pearl ropes and colored crystal hanging around her neck. In 1926, she

introduced the “little black dress” for the first time. This color had been in favor (except

for mourning) since 15th century Spain. “Vogue” predicted it would not only be the dress

of the decade, but for the first time, used the word “ford” in describing it. In the fashion

industry, the word “ford” means that the style will be worn by millions—i.e.,

everybody’s dress.

2 Chanel bobbed her hair, and so did most of the western world; she dared to wear p

ants— copied somewhat after a sailor’s; she tanned her skin in the Mediterranean sun. But

perhaps her most enduring legacy is the Chanel suit—a simple, cropped jacket usually bo

und with braids, soutache, or ribbons, open and unbuttoned, with a soft, straight, or pleate

d skirt. This style was fresh and new in 1925 as it was in the late 1990s , copied by

almost every designer in the world at one time or another.

3 At the beginning of World War II, she closed her house. She had no plans to reope

n after the war, but she reopened in 1954. Once again, her designs sold like hot cakes. It is

hard to believe that a seventy-one year old woman could reconquer the tough fashion worl

d, but such was the case. Until her death in 1970, she kept at her drawing board, turning o

ut one collection after another. Her last collection was as welcomed as her first. She captu

red the spirit of a century. Perhaps her own words sum her life up best: speaking in the thi

rd person, she said “Chanel, above all else, is a style. Fashion, you see, goes out

of fashion. Style, never.”

Three Colors Go Together Well

1 Color is one of the most important elements in making and selecting a garment.

The easiest method is to choose three colors that go together well. Find three of your

favorite color to be your color group. Select individual articles of clothing in these

colors only. Of course, if you prefer, add a fourth color that goes well with the rest.

However, it is not practical to have more than four colors in your wardrobe unless

many items are in the “neutral” shades. Once you have decided on your three-color

combinations, rearrange your clothes according to the color combinations. Weed out

any garments that have undesired shades.

2 Another way to dress successfully is to start with a neutral color, then add two or

three colors that work well together. For example, white works well with purple or red; grey

with burgundy and navy. The deeper and darker colors are more suitable as your core colors

in large items like coats, suits, skirts and pants. The lighter and brighter colors should be

used as accents for smaller items such as blouses, sweaters, scarves and accessories. Red,

white, and black are the three colors which are mostly used in clothing. By selecting from

your

three-color combinations you can dress yourself successfully.

3 In order to make use of your clothes you may choose clothes for their versatility.

Clothing can be worn for several occasions. For example, a shirtwaist dress combined with a

blazer can be worn during the day. For evening, try the same dress without the blazer, open

the neck to reveal a lacy top and wear high heeled shoes and dress jewelry.

4 A suit is very dependable, as it can be worn for many occasions. Light-colored s

uits require a darker blouse for business wear in the daytime and a light-colored blouse f

or evening wear in an evening party, as the lighter-colored blouse looks elegant. The dar

k suit (navy or black) looks more serious and authoritative than a light one, and is more

flexible, as it can be worn for both day and evening. For evening or theatre, a silk

shirt, pearl necklace and other dressy jewelry.

5 The three-color combinations are only a suggestion for bringing style into your

life. If you refer to your imagination, the possibilities will be endless.
