When we learn a language, there are fourskills that we need for completecommunication. When we learn our nativelanguage, we usually learn to listen first, thento speak, then to read, and finally to write.These are called the four "language skills":
Skill #1: Listening
Skill #2: Speaking Skill #3: Reading
Skill #4: Writing

Listening is the absorption of themeanings of words and sentencesby the brain. Listening leads to theunderstanding of facts and ideas.But listening takes attention, orsticking to the task at hand in spiteof distractions. It requiresconcentration, which is thefocusing of your thoughts upon oneparticular problem.
Good listening is built on threebasic skills: attitude, attention,and adjustment. These skills areknown collectively as triple-Alistening.

People often say Nothing much! or I cant really remember
when they do talking with others. In this kind of talk, theinformation contents is not important. What is important is thegoodwill that is maintained through the talk
For maintaining good
social relations
People listen to jokes, stories, songs, plays, TV, radio
broadcasts, etc.For entertainment
People listen to news broadcasts, directions on how to get todifferent places, weather, etc enables them to get theinformation necessary for day-to-day living
For obtaining
information necessary
for day-to-day living
People listen to lectures, seminars and talks as a way ofextending their knowledge and skills
For academic purpose

The listening component aims at
developing learners ability to listen toand understand the spoken languagebetter. The sub-skills of listeningrange from the basic level of sound,word and phrase recognition to anunderstanding of the whole text.

Learners are encouraged to listen to various text typesso that they will become familiar with the sounds,intonation and stress patterns of the English languageas well as to get to know the correct pronunciation ofwords and the use of certain expressions.
Learners are also encouraged to respond to theinformation or message heard in a variety of waysincluding verbal and non-verbal forms.

By the end of their primary schooling,learners should be able to listen to and
understand various text types such asannouncements, instructions, and messages.They should be able to: Listen to and discriminate similar and different
sounds of the English language; Listen to and repeat accurately the correct
pronunciation of words, and the correct intonationand word stress when uttering phrases, expressionsand sentences;

Acquire vocabulary and understand themeaning of words and phrases in context;
Listen to and follow simple instructions anddirections accurately;

Listen to and enjoy the rhyme, rhythm andsounds of poetry, jazz chants and songs; and

As speaking is linked closely to listening, learners are taught
to listen carefully to what is spoken and give an appropriateresponse.In the development of oral skills, learners are taught how toask questions politely when seeking information orclarification and to reply giving relevant information.
Learners are also taught to express their thoughts, feelingsand ideas simply when talking to friends and older people.

To this end, learners are taught to use appropriate words,phrases and expressions that do not offend others whichcan occur with the lack of proficiency. In making their
utterances understood by others, learners are taught topronounce words correctly and to speak clearly with theright stress and intonation.
By the end of their primary schooling, learners should beable to talk to friends, relatives, teachers and other peopleconfidently using simple language and with an acceptablelevel of grammar. They should be able to:

Speak clearly by pronouncing wordsaccurately, and speaking with the correct
stress, intonation and sentence rhythm; Talk confidently on topics of interest in
simple language;
