Plastics unlimited?! That was the central theme of Innovation Day on November 19, 2014, at Packworld. Expert presenters explored exciting new perspectives: What are the factors limiting packaging design? Where are the environmental limits to the use of plastics? Or – how can we move beyond existing limitations in order to optimize important packaging functions? See pages 6 to 11 of this magazine for a closer look at the lessons surrounding Innovation Day and “Plastics unlimited?!” The photos relating to our company history were taken on October 29, 2014: It was a great moment as, at exactly 4:23 p.m. local time, Andreas Frank, Willi Eibner and Michael Reiser cut the symbolic red ribbon in Pittston,

Cool coffee beverages have conquered the palate of many Europeans in recent years. The market recorded above-average growth rates in this segment and a new strong mar-ket player emerged last summer: Lactalis Nestlé Produits Frais, a joint venture of Nestlé and Lactalis. Thanks to the Nesca-fé Shakissimo product line, the company has achieved a major coup right from the start. The product’s three variations, name-ly Latte Espresso Latte Macchiato and Latte Cappuccino, have been received with enthu-siasm by coffee drinkers in many European countries.

Shake me for extra creamy foamShaking the coffee beverage causes a creamy foam to form immediately. The Nescafé Shakissimo cup therefore fulfills an impor-tant function in addition to its fundamental packaging task. Lactalis Nestlé Produits Frais and Greiner Packaging poured a great deal of effort into the packaging development, which took almost two years, during which time more than 45 drawings were produced. Detail upon detail was added, until the final cup shape emerged. The work has certainly paid off. The Nescafé Shakissimo packaging is just as excellent as its contents.

Innovation Day 2014 – a balancing act between consumer behavior, endless design possibilities, and ecological considerations.

Plastics play an increasingly important role in today‘s world. The most varied plastic products pass through our hands several hundred times a day and we can no longer imagine our world without them. The benefits they generate for companies and consumers alike, and the limits to the use of plastics – these were the key themes discussed by Greiner Packaging in “Plastics unlimited?!” at this year’s Innovation Day at Packworld.

Plastic packaging creates an experiencePackaging is the first thing we see when we go to a supermarket! Even an average-sized supermarket offers

consumers a choice of about 10,000 products. Impulse-buying makes up 70% of all buying decisions and happens within just three seconds, as Christoph Waldau, CEO of Berndt+Partner Creality GmbH stressed in his speech on Innovation Day. What, therefore, are the criteria that dictate what the consumer reaches for? Packaging sends a message. And not just the listing of the contents either. Packaging with the most varied feel and appearance allows the consumers to experience the product being sold even before it has been unpacked and consumed. Packaging therefore creates an experience, and consequently, a reality, to the products on the shelves as well as the companies behind them.

“Bio-based, compostable, recyclable, CO2 neutral: are there guarantees for ecological packaging or are new paths to be followed?”

Plastic packaging offers protectionThe essential objective of packaging is to provide protection to its contents. We live in a time of increasingly health-conscious consumers who prefer to dispense entirely with preservatives. But we also live in a time of stressed consumers. Products must therefore offer maximum convenience for those always on the go. Ibt (inert barrier technology), the innovation from Greiner Packaging, offers both protection and convenience. Tobias Strasser, manager of Greiner Packaging Switzerland, presented the innovation to a broad audience during Innovation Day 2014. Migration between packaging and

filling is reduced to a minimum (practically zero), thanks to a layer of silicon oxide placed in cups in a plasma deposition process. In addition, the resulting barrier layer greatly improves the shelf life of products without the use of any preservatives. That is beneficial for the health of not just the consumers, but of the environment as well, because it curbs unnecessary food wastage.

Plastic packaging sharpens consciousnessIt is a fact that there is a certain environmental impact originating from producing and processing plastics as well as from all other materials. However, it is also a fact

that we cannot dispense with plastic products. Responsible management of our resources must therefore be the focus! This begins with the selection of the right materials used to generate plastic products, efficient recycling at the company, and extends all the way to the responsibility that every individual household and every individual consumer must bear when it comes to proper waste disposal. Innovation Day 2014 examines these aspects in an engaging and clear manner. Greiner Packaging wishes to thank all speakers and guests for coming!

The twin sheet procedure is ideal for the production of reusable pallets. For this tech-nology, two plastic plates are held in a com-mon tensioning frame and heated on each side to a thermoelastic state. Afterwards, they are simultaneously deformed in the up-per and lower tools and welded together. The two plates can be of differing strengths and colors.

Top quality and cost advantagePrecision is a critical factor, particularly in automated production. Component loading and unloading must be trouble-free, and consistently high quality in the loading container is crucial. Customers of Greiner Assistec can rely on this 100 percent. The double-walled property makes the loading containers particularly stable. Moreover, the

Stable and precise: Twin sheetTwin sheet thermoforming process gives new freedom of design in the manufacture of double-walled components

contours of the containers can be created differently on the top and underside, ensuring optimal component positioning while making it stackable. Customers also profit from the fact that Greiner Assistec has the base forms for the standard market dimensions (1/4 Euro – 400 x 600 mm or 1/2 Euro – 600 x 800 mm), thereby reducing customer investment to product-specific changeable mold inserts.

Current examples of application

Flange Sound-attenuating elements

Investment in precision Two new state-of-the-art measuring devices from Zeiss for the Brezova site (Czech Republic)

Two newly acquired devices (DuraMax and O-INSPECT 322) combine tactile scanning and optical measurement. They incorporate optical and tactile sensors, and CAD-based 3D-measuring software to pull the measu-rement data together. This enables truly 3D measurements that provide information on form and shape. Greiner Assistec uses the measuring devices in the production of pre-cision parts. The stability of the process is monitored by random sampling.

Faster, more preciseThe investment yields two marked advantages. Firstly, it makes measuring much

faster than before, so that more random sampling can take place at the same time. And secondly, the new measuring devices record more measuring points, thereby improving the quality of the production process. This makes it a winning proposition for any customers requiring manufacture of precision parts.

Successful product ideas have driven the growth of the German adhesive specialist Pattex by Henkel since the introduction of its power adhesives in 1956. This year, the creativity of Pattex has combined with the innovative strength of Greiner Packaging. The result is Sharky+, a closure and a saw at the same time. It allows users of Pattex Repair Express Power Putty to use the product without an additional tool. “Through the use of efficient project management, we were able to reduce the “time to market” and facilitate an early product launch,“ Franz Dilly, Head of Division Greiner Assistec at Greiner Packaging International, was happy to say. “Moreover, we can offer our customers the advantages of a strong production network throughout Europe as well as a variety of technologies.”

Versatile, two-component puttyPattex Repair Express Power Putty is a fast-curing, two-component putty. It is impressive not only because it boasts strong adhesion power, but also because it is easy to knead. After five minutes, the putty is already cured and can be painted over or subjected to any form of surface treatment. There are a multitude of applications, from traditional adhesion of different materials (e.g., wood on plastic or metal) to filling in holes, closing cracks, or repairing the damages of concrete. Pattex – the power adhesive from HenkelThe Repair Express Power Putty with the practical saw-closure Sharky+ joins the ranks of numerous Pattex innovations. Those innovations are the driving force of the brand

and have made Pattex a leading international brand in the adhesives market. It is also one of the well known brands of Henkel. The company has 47,000 employees worldwide and operates in three business sectors, namely laundry and home care, beauty care, and adhesive technologies.

Now, for the first time, the Greiner Packaging site in Estonia is using IML packaging for the Latvian dairy, Rigas Piensaimnieks. These new items are replacing the previously used K1 cups, and their brilliant appearance attracts attention on the shelf. IML is a decoration variation with multiple advantages that has proven itself in the most varied forms of packaging, above all, non-round designs. The huge advantage

of IML is that the decoration surfaces can be utilized in their

entirety.

Expertise, geographical proximity, and focus on safety: these characteristics are currently the most important considerations in the Russian market for producing plastic bottles. By fulfilling all three criteria with its site in Vladimir, about 180 km northeast of Moscow, Greiner Packaging has become a popular partner for customers in the chemical, health care, cosmetic, and food industry. With its Kavo Division, Greiner Packaging offers complete solutions, ranging from the bottle to the decoration to the closure. From its base in Russia, Greiner aims to continue expanding its presence in Europe with these offerings.

Baby product packaging for Rassvet The collaboration with Rassvet is the latest example of the increasing demand for

competent and reliable manufacturers of high-quality plastic bottles in Russia. The baby product manufacturer commissioned Greiner Packaging Kavo to supply a 150mL bottle for its baby series, consisting of Baby Body Milk and Baby Body Shampoo. The elegant HDPE bottle is manufactured and labeled using the extrusion blow molding process. The packaging concept is completed with a twist-off closure with disc top. This project is another milestone that marks Greiner Packaging Russia‘s successful expansion over the past few years. This expansion is slated to continue in the coming years with further investments in modern blowmolding technologies to produce HDPE, PP, as well as PET bottles for further expansion of the Kavo production in Vladimir.

Albalact is the second largest supplier of dairy products in Romania. Greiner Packaging is exclusively producing a unique milk bottle with an integrated handle for products of the Albalact brand Zuzu. The new packaging with its excellent distinctive design was developed by Greiner Packaging in close collaboration with Albalact. The integrated handle in particular requires the utmost precision in the production process. However, thanks to years of experience as a packaging producer as well as new blow molding equipment especially acquired for this purpose, Greiner Packaging is able to meet the challenge.

Consumers are thrilled In daily use, the milk bottle with grip stands out for its user friendliness. It fits perfectly in the hand, making it easy to pour. Its well-conceived dimensions also fit perfectly in refrigerator doors and kitchen cabinets. The bottle, made from HDPE plastic, is produced in three sizes (500, 1000, and 1800 mL) in an extrusion blow molding process. Cristina Miclea, Marketing Director at Albalact, is happy about the development: “Our customers are thrilled with the new packaging solution.”

State prize for “Bottle with Snap-in Container”Contact lens solution with contact lens container come together in a single snap!

Austria’s Smart Packaging State Prize honors outstanding integrated packaging solutions. Greiner Packaging‘s invention of a bottle with snap-in lens container is also a prime example of such integrates solution and was, therefore, in November 2014 awarded the “Spezial Prize for Innovation” as part of the state prize. In this practical packaging solution, the bottom of a plastic bottle for contact lens solution is designed to allow the contact lens container to simply snap into place. The snap-in function is practical and space-saving, making it ideal for everyday use and travel.

Special design for the bottom of the bottleGreiner Packaging‘s years of experience as a packaging producer is evident in the design of the bottom snap-in bottle function, which enables one to snap the contact lens container in and out repeatedly. But it isn’t just the incredible technical expertise behind the bottle with snap-in container. The innovation also demonstrates Greiner Packaging’s high regard for design and functionality when developing products. The bottle with snap-in container catches the consumer’s attention, thereby greatly contributing to a lift in sales.
