The Rugby 800 family is the first series in Leica’s new line of construction lasers. These rotating lasers are designed from the ground up and even surpass their predecessors. The flagship of the four models being introduced to the market is the versatile Leica Rugby 840, a multipurpose horizontal/vertical laser for all levelling, aligning and squaring applications with an automatic calibration feature to ensure the highest accuracy and reliability.

The Leica Rugby series is believed to be the only lasers in the industry with a military grade certification (MIL-STD 810G) and IP68 rating. The robust design makes them some of the toughest in the market to deliver reliable and accurate results even in the harshest job site conditions.

At the touch of a button, the intelligent Smart Targeting functionality allows construction workers to tie-in slopes (in single and dual axis) and to align the beam in vertical automatically. Once the laser is set up on the starting point the second point can be positioned automatically by using the new Leica Rod Eye laser receiver without the need to walk back to the laser or using a separate remote control.

With Smart Lock, the laser plane is continuously monitored in real-time eliminating errors, giving users the necessary peace of mind. Should the laser plane move out of tolerance, the laser will indicate the movement with an alarm. This functionality is ideal for batter board and facade applications that require a fixed installation of the system and the laser plane to stay exactly in place all day long.

In addi t ion, the new Maximum Temperature Stability technology provides excellent accuracy throughout the day

Hamm has added four oscillatory rollers to its HD CompactLine, which comprise HD 10 VO (2.6 t), HD 12 VO (2.8 t), HD 13 VO (4 t) and HD 14 VO (4.4 t). With this, the company’s HD CompactLine now has 16 models in total, believed to be the largest range in the sub-4.5 t weight category on the market.

According to Hamm, the advantage of oscillation is that it achieves a very fast increase in compaction, because the drums direct tangential thrusting forces into the material to be compacted while remaining constantly in contact with the ground. The combination of continuously acting static load and changing dynamic shear forces in the material leads to a faster, better and more gentle compaction.

With the development of oscillatory rollers in this weight class, Hamm is responding to the increasing demands for high-quality compaction even in extremely small areas. Applications can be found in urban centres for example. Up to now, tandem rollers have only been able to operate in static mode on narrow construction sites. In future, oscillatory rollers will be able to compact dynamically, since oscillatory compaction does not disturb buildings or pipework below the road surface through vibration.

Hamm adds oscillatory rollers to HD CompactLine

There are countless areas of application for Hamm’s CompactLine with oscillation, such as compaction of thin layers on tack coat or spray seal, hot on hot (DSH-V), compaction of patches, compaction of water-bound path surfaces in landscape gardening as well as asphalt compaction in confined urban areas or along seams and kerbstones.

Hamm tandem rollers with operating weights of 2.5 t or more will also be available with oscillatory drums in future.

Oscillation also optimises compaction at interfaces to existing road surfaces, said Hamm. Currently this area has called for particular care when undertaking minor repairs or when compacting alongside kerbs. Soon, with oscillatory rollers, it will be possible to compact dynamically as this technology does not damage the cold asphalt.

During compaction of thin layers on tack coat or spray seal, hot on hot (DSH-V) and other thin asphalt layers, the high compaction speed makes a noticeable improvement. A further plus point in favour of oscillatory rollers is that they also work very efficiently on cooled asphalt, added Hamm.

Another application is in the compaction of open-pore asphalts. The HD 14 VO is of particular importance for this application, because it can cover large areas with its low static linear load and broad working width.

Last but not least, oscillatory compaction is also suitable for many landscaping applications. Water-bound path surfaces or asphalt cycle paths can be compacted more efficiently with the new oscillatory rollers. n

The new Sandvik CH550 cone crusher is building on the rock solid foundation of the Hydrocone concept, and has the ability to be configured for either secondary or tertiary crusher applications. It is aimed to provide customers with optimum performance and good cubical shape, whilst ensuring low operating cost per ton for a wide range of materials and applications.

The CH550 is versatile - one of the three eccentric bushings can cover 90 percent of the application range. The wear parts have also been adapted to ensure a longer lifetime per ton produced. In addition, the crusher features effective power transfer capability thanks to new drive arrangements that give a precise lining of the V-belts, and more than five times prolonged life time.

To minimise negative environmental impact and produce safe working conditions, the CH550 comes with no plastic backing. Plus, the motor has the highest energy efficiency classification, resulting in less power consumption and thus minimising CO2 emissions. According to Sandvik, these features enable the crusher to reduce emissions by approximately 30 t each year compared to earlier models.

The CH550 is also equipped with Sandvik’s ASRi system to safely maximise operational uptime. This automatic setting system enables the crusher to run at maximum performance levels; it adjusts automatically to the variations in feed conditions for an ideal final product. n

Compact and robust Sandvik DH350 drilling rigSandvik’s new DH350 drilling rig is the first machine to have been developed and manufactured at the company’s Jiading R&D centre in China. The first customer for this machine is the Chinese contractor Fujian Saibang Leasing Co.

The DH350 is a diesel powered, crawler mounted, self-contained down-the-hole drilling rig. The machine is intended for drilling with 3-in, 4-in and 5-in hammers in the 89-152 mm hole range. Featuring a rigid fixed boom and feed design, combined with efficient hydraulics for boom positioning, feed, rotation, tramming and track oscillation, the DH350 provides customers with a highly accurate and productive rig. Furthermore, operational productivity, hole accuracy and drilling smoothness, are further enhanced by a heavy-duty rotary head that supplies a very high torque of 2,530 Nm.

Fuel costs are also m i n i m i s e d w i t h t w o separate power sources, with the rig featuring an optimised, on board 43 kW diesel engine for drilling and ancillary operations; while an external compressor provides compressed air for the hammer and hole flushing, being powered by an independent engine.

The Sandvik CH550 has the ability to be configured for either secondary or tertiary crusher applications.

The compact nature of the DH350, with its smaller dimensions and operational flexibility, allows it to be used to drill blasting holes in narrow tunnels for vertical excavation. On real estate projects, the DH350 is ideal for basement blasting that is required in reconstruction work. The machine can also be used on sites with dead corners; this has traditionally been a problem for many larger TH drill rigs, but the size of the DH350 enables its effective use, said Sandvik. Another key attribute of the rig is that due to it being equipped with a primary cyclone, the DH350’s dust collector minimises the amount of dust produced while drilling, thereby lengthening the engine life time and providing the operator with a clear view

of the drilling spot for more accurate drilling. n

Liebherr’s new LR 1250 crawler crane is based on the previous model (LR 1200), with a 250 t lifting capacity. The crane has a reinforced main boom and is powered by a 362 hp six-cylinder diesel engine.

The LR 1250 features high flexibility due to the various boom and jib combinations. The crane is fitted with two crane winches, each featuring 12 t line pull and offering high rope speeds for this line pull. The crane can also be equipped with 12 t free-fall winches.

The use of innovative and top-quality materials such as CFRP for the pendant straps guarantees utmost ease of use. Carbon fibre pendant straps offer several advantages, such as maintenance-free, easy to handle and facilitate erection of the crane.

Transportation of the crane, including boom and counterweight, is made easy through retraction of the track width to 5.8 m. Even more time is saved as it is no longer required to disassemble and assemble the crane and its equipment, said Liebherr. This ‘taxi-crane’ feature is highly beneficial for short-term work on jobsites.

The LR 1250 is equipped with the Litronic control system of the latest generation, which is based on CAN bus technology. The load moment limitation automatically calculates the lifting capacities during operation and ensures optimum use of the machine. According to Liebherr, the Litronic control concept is the only one on the market to manage without storage of load charts or interpolation of interim values. Compared to the previous model the control display was more clearly arranged, which facilitates orientation for the operator and so increases ease of operation.

The LR 1250 can also be equipped with LiDAT, Liebherr’s own data transmission and positioning system. LiDAT provides information on the operation of the machine and fuel consumption. With these data crane operation can be carried out more efficiently. Various additional packages allow display of data on wind speed or machine configuration as well as access through service engineers via Teleservice. n

Hyundai Heavy Industries has developed a web-based monitoring system for its heavy equipment. The Hi-Mate system monitors the machine and supplies additional data such as localisation and transmission of performance data. It provides data including detailed history about utilisation, fuel consumption and handling performance; GPS-based localisation machinery; real-time alarm (with geo-fencing feature); and theft protection.

Hi-Mate monitors machine location via GPS, so that the exact position of the machine can be determined with an accuracy of a few meters. As soon as the machine leaves a specified range, Hi-Mate will automatically produce a warning message (via phone or email) that allows the operator to take adequate measures.

The system communicates via the Orbcomm satellite without extra charges for data transfer or similar. Every day data referring to operating hours, engine hours, fuel consumption and amount of fuel remaining in the tank are being transmitted to a control centre at Hyundai.

A particularly important point, especially for rental fleets, is the exact provision of maintenance dates. Hi-Mate does monitor by individually adjustable schedule intervals for exchange of filters for fuel, hydraulic oil and air intake. Driver and operator will both be informed in advance about next maintenance or service date.

Hi-Mate provides a bi-directional communication. Fleet managers can send messages or emails to the driver on the large Hi-Mate display. For technical irregularities Hyundai service technicians can ‘look into the machine’ via satellite connection at any time.

Hi-Mate is part of the standard equipment on all Hyundai construction machines starting with an operating weight of 14 t. According to the company, it can be used over the entire lifetime of the machine. n

Trimble has recently introduced version 2.1 of its 3D asphalt milling solution. The Trimble PCS900 Paving Control System for milling machines helps contractors mill a smoother and higher quality surface, reduce machine stoppage and minimise costly rework. Hot swap functionality in the Trimble SPS930 Universal Total Station maintains continuity and accuracy of milling operations without stopping the machine. System portability means contractors can use the system on multiple machines and job sites. Collectively, the elimination of stringline, reduced machine stoppage and rework can mean significantly improved productivity for the contractor using the PCS900 system.

The Trimble SPS930 Universal Total Station provides a clear competitive advantage for the PCS900 Paving Control System. The PCS900 system uses the Trimble SPS930 Universal Total Station and active targets to guide the milling drum to grade. Unique Trimble technology allows the system to hot swap, or automatically and instantly transition, to the next total station without stopping the machine to make a manual transition. By automatically maintaining the same tolerance between total stations, PCS900 also ensures a smoother milled surface at the transition point and reduces the need to re-mill spots along a long roadway project.

Trimble explained that other 3D milling solutions require the mill to stop to make a manual transition each time a total station hand off is required, causing significant delay and reducing the smoothness of the milled surface. In a typical eight-hour shift, this machine stoppage and manual intervention can mean a productivity loss of up to 15 percent waiting for the equipment to be re-established and recalibrated. The SPS930 also requires significantly fewer manual adjustments than fan laser based systems to maintain its high level of accuracy and deliver a smoother final surface.

Trimble 3D milling solution accelerates project completion

PCS900 v2.1 for milling machines is very easy for job crews to set up, operate and maintain. As a CAN-based paving control solution, it communicates directly with factory-installed 2D systems from most milling machine manufacturers and allows the operator to control both the 2D and 3D sensor configurations from a single display.

The PCS900 system requires only one on-machine radio, making it easier to install and maintain than other 3D milling solutions, said Trimble. A new portable version of the PCS900 system encloses the machine radio, power module and wiring in one easy-to-install magnetically mounted unit, reducing daily set-up time to typically less than 10 minutes.

Version 2.1 of the Trimble PCS900 Paving Control System for milling machines is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2013 through the SITECH technology distributor network. n

Gomaco’s new GT-3200 sidewalk paver has an adjustable aggregate base mould on the front and a sidewalk paving mould on the rear. It is a three-track paver designed specifically for zero-clearance sidewalk rehabilitation projects.

The GT-3200 can be equipped with a front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mould to spread the base aggregate for the sidewalk. During the first pass, rock is placed on grade and an auger spreads the material, while three pan vibrators mounted to the mould start the compaction process. The base mould is equipped with two heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders that provide 356 mm of hydraulic lift for setting the grade depth below the track line and raising the mould for the paving pass.

During the second paving pass, the sidewalk is slipformed with a unique, minimum-clearance trailing mould. The GT-3200 sidewalk paver has a 508 mm wide, 4.3 m long folding conveyor. The conveyor allows ready-mix trucks to discharge from the street instead of driving over existing curb to reach the paver. The hydraulic pivoting conveyor has also been designed to rotate 180 degrees for easy loading of concrete into the hopper from either side of the machine and to avoid obstacles associated with zero-clearance paving. The Gomaco-proven sidewalk mould features hydraulic adjustable sideplates to form the Gomaco edge, while a trailing stainless pan provides the superior finish. The sidewalk mould can also be equipped with a bar inserter for placing transverse bars into the slab, if required by project specifications.

The GT-3200 sidewalk paver also features all-track steering, which saves time getting on and off stringline, allows better jobsite mobility, and ease in loading and unloading for transport. It can be transported without removing either the front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mould or the rear-mounted sidewalk paving mould - simply fold the conveyor and drive the GT-3200 onto the trailer for transport. It features the latest in Gomaco machine control with the exclusive G+ system with a new full colour screen. G+ is a powerful controller for paving accuracy and electronic monitoring of steering and grade. G+, combined with the GT-3200’s C4.4T Caterpillar engine with 91 hp, provides plenty of power for sidewalk paving.

In addition, Gomaco’s new texture/cure machine, the T/C-5600, features four crawler tracks, the exclusive G+ control system and widths up to 17 m. The new four-

Gomaco’s new sidewalk paver and texture/cure machine

track design with 90 degree turn capability allows easy width changes and easy transport, while G+ provides electronic-over-hydraulic steering and grade control for ultimate accuracy.

The magic behind the easy width changes is the T/C-5600’s new walking end car with cure tank. Frame sections can be added or removed by turning the machine’s tracks 90 degrees and walking the end car with attached cure tank to the required width. Frame inserts are available in 1.2 m, 2.4 m, and 3.7 m lengths. The frame design has the structural integrity to go up to 17 m wide.

The new T/C-5600 offers excellent tining depth accuracy with the new Gomaco Tracer Texture Control. A sonic sensor traces the slab with the transverse travel of the tining broom. The tining depth is controlled by hydraulic height adjustment on the broom carriage.

The two working together provide accurate tining depth, eliminate rail adjustments, and also eliminate the need for a power transition adjustor (PTA). Tracer Texture Control also works with transition adjustments required for longitudinal tining.

With G+ Connect on-board, the new T/C-5600 can operate on stringline for steering and grade control or use other control methods available from the Gomaco sensor library, or 3D stringless control. G+ control allows easy changing of travel modes, switching from operational to transport.

The T/C-5600 was designed to be easy to transport. The tracks turn 90 degrees for easy loading onto a low-boy trailer and the spray bar and work bridge assembly hydraulically folds up for a transport width of 3 m. n

Caterpillar’s new B-series range of vibratory soil compactors includes nine models. The smooth drum models comprise CS54B, CS56B, CS68B, CS74B and CS78B, while the padfoot models consist of CP54B, CP56B, CP68B and CP74B. They have operating weights ranging from 10.6 to 19 t and feature a Cat C4.4 or C6.6 engine with ACERT technology. These engines utilise the building blocks of ACERT technology in order to meet US EPA Tier 3 Interim and EU Stage IIIA emission standards.

The Cat dual pump propel system provides steady hydraulic flow for excellent gradeability and blade function and now has been enhanced with electronic control for even better performance (CS54B and CP54B models do not feature electronic control). The dual pump propel system provides separate hydraulic flow to the rear wheels and the drum for exceptional tractive effort in thick lifts, soft underfoot conditions or steep slope applications and allows for superior control on a grade in forward and reverse.

The Eco-mode function helps to economise the use of fuel. When the machine idles for a predetermined amount of time, Eco-mode is engaged and the engine rpm is lowered. When the propel is engaged, higher engine speeds resume. For certain applications, Eco-mode can be engaged to operate the engine at lower rpm than normal. The lower engine speed results in less fuel consumption. Eco-mode can also be programmed to shut down the engine entirely after a programmed amount of time.

The Cat pod-style vibratory system delivers great performance and reliability in a virtually maintenance-free design. The system contains a proprietary sealed eccentric weight system that utilises steel shot rather than swinging steel counterweights. This design enables the operator to change amplitudes smoothly with less noise. The steel shot simply rearranges its position without any of the slamming, banging and jamming that causes hydraulic contamination in systems from other manufacturers. Eliminating contamination in this way provides high reliability, and contributes to the three year/3,000 hour vibratory system oil change interval, according to Caterpillar.

Moreover, the B-series vibratory soil compactors have enhanced compaction capability. Weight over the drum has been added in each model, and the maximum amplitude has been increased. There is also a new automatic vibration function. When vibration is engaged, vibration will cease as the compactor slows beneath a predetermined speed. When propel resumes, vibration recommences at a predetermined speed. This feature optimises compaction uniformity.

The automatic speed control allows the operator to select a maximum working speed (not available on CS54B and CP54B). Once selected, the speed can consistently be reached by engaging the propel lever to full stroke. Consistent speed contributes to compaction quality by making it easier to maintain compaction uniformity.

All B-series vibratory soil compactors (except the CS78B) are equipped with a standard universal bumper on the yoke. The universal bumper facilitates the use of attachments, such as the levelling blade and the padfoot shell kit. This contributes to the versatility of the machines, as well as enables faster change-overs.

Padfoot drum models and optional padfoot shell kits are available with two pad designs, the oval faced design or a traditional square faced pad design. The oval faced design provides deeper lift penetration, contributing to better overall compaction in cohesive soils than other pad designs. The square faced design provides optimal performance on semi-cohesive soils. It has a higher surface area, which allows it to create a good surface seal; but the larger

face area does not allow deep lift penetration, so while it will meet or exceed the performance of square pad designs from other manufacturers, it cannot provide compaction results that match the oval face pad in cohesive soils, explained Caterpillar.

The operator’s station on the B-series vibratory soil compactors has been enhanced to provide greater operator comfort and convenience. All models can be configured with an open platform, an open platform with steel sun canopy, and an open platform with ROPS/FOPS or a ROPS/FOPS Cab. Standard configurations may vary by market.

Apart from the padfoot shell kit, other optional equipment include Cat Compaction Control - a compaction measurement solution to improve quality and efficiency by providing information that allows the operator to determine when compaction meets specifications, which eliminates guesswork, reduces the risk of rework and allows the operator to quickly move on to the next job; levelling blade - which is available for padfoot drum models CP56B, CP68B and CP74B, and smooth drum models CS56B, CS68B and CS74B; and the Product Link system - which provides accurate, timely and useful information about the location, utilisation and condition of the equipment. The Product Link system streamlines diagnostic efforts, maintenance scheduling and costs by providing communication flow of vital machine data and location information between the dealer and customer. n

n Cranes

The new Sennebogen 6130 HD duty cycle crawler crane is designed for operation with large diaphragm wall grabs, and for pipework and leader operation. The machine is also ideal for use in the demanding area of wet extraction with dragline bucket.

The 6130 HD is powered by a 570 kW Cat diesel engine. A more powerful variant with 708 kW is available optionally for harsh implementation in special underground engineering operation. The hoist rope, which is delivered in thicknesses of 34 mm or 36 mm, transmits the force of the two winches to where it is needed. Two winch variants with 25 kN or 30 kW hoisting force can be installed and enable high rope speeds.

A newly designed boom has been specially configured for dynamic use requirements. Simultaneously a slewing ring featuring a particularly strong design with large gearing ensures high torque and robust operation. Thus a long service life is guaranteed even under high loads.

In addition, the 6130 HD comes with a newly designed telescoping undercarriage. Retracted, the undercarriage has a transport width that measures less than 4 m. In use the machine has a 5.10 m stabilising width and promises ideal stability. With the help of the hydraulically adjustable A-frame, the 6130 HD can independently ballast itself, meaning it is operational in no time.

The crane ’s s turdy mechanical components are well suited for dynamic tasks. Extremely wide, stable rope pulleys ensure reliable rope guidance of the available 34 mm and 36 mm rope and withstand even the highest stresses. In dragline bucket operation the 6130 HD is impressive with a newly designed fairlead in the lower boom section that ensures low-wear rope guidance and a long component service life.

The comfortable maXcab is highly ergonomic, has a sliding door for easy entry and offers outstanding all-round visibility. It is also equipped with the Sennebogen control system, Sencon, which enables the operator to read off, monitor and manage all machine parameters from a central location. n

n Cranes

The 120 t BMS1200HD crawler crane from Kobelco Cranes features a 314 kN maximum line pull and 157 kN rated line pull on main winch and auxiliary winch with 36 mm diameter wire rope. It also has a 132 kN rated line pull on the third winch. The crane’s operating weight is 116 t.

The BM1200HD’s line speed on the first layer is 110 m/min, which is twice as fast as its nearest heavy-duty competitor with standard winches, according to Kobelco Cranes. High spooling capacity on the first layer makes deep digging possible while working from the first layer. This increases the lifetime of wire rope and reduces running cost and downtime as the interval to change wire rope is reduced by around 50 percent.

The spooling capacity on the first layer is 54 m, which is nearly 50 percent higher than some competitors, said Kobelco Cranes. This means the BM1200HD is often able to continue operations while working on the same layer, whereas the other machines need to change layer far more often because of their limited spooling capacity.

The BM1200HD’s power system is powered by two hydraulic pumps providing 2 x 300 l/min oil flow, and the control system is powered by a hydraulic pump providing 1 x 35 l/min oil flow. The crane is equipped with an MTU 12V2000 diesel engine, which has 12 cylinders in V-design and provides 634 kW of rugged rated power at 1,800 rpm. The engine meets the EPA Tier 2 emission standards.

The BMS1200HD is designed to work with various attachments, including clamshell bucket, diaphragm wall bucket, hammer grab bucket; oscillator casing drive and rotator casing drive up to 3,000 mm in diameter; fly

Multi-purpose Kobelco BMS1200HD crawler crane

drilling method from 1,500 to 5,500 mm in diameter; and vibro hammer by centrifugal force and from 700 to 1,624 kN. Although the BMS1200HD performs well as a foundation machine, it can also work as a lifting crane thanks to its excellent lifting duties and high line speed.

The BMS1200HD is available with 18.3 m upper and lower boom and up to 61 m maximum boom length. The crane is equipped with Kobelco’s latest easy-to-read, full-colour 12-in display monitor with touch screen and easy-to-read ISO symbols. In addition, the auxiliary sheave (runner) features a 30 t maximum lifting capacity. And transport weight of the base machine has been limited to only 46.9 t (base machine with winches and gantry, but without crawlers).

The BMS1200HD is intended to replace the previous model, the BM1200, which was first introduced in 1991. The BMS1200HD can also be used on barges; a reduced lifting table for working on barges is already available. n

Peri has expanded the application possibilities of the Variokit engineering construction kit. With new Variokit system components, it is now possible to create a heavy-duty truss girder – as a suitable further development to supplement the Variokit heavy-duty shoring tower. During the development, Peri took into account the load-bearing capacity of the tower as well as the challenging requirements of everyday construction work.

The modular lattice system can be used for spans up to 40 m and is characterised by a very high load-bearing capacity. With the continuously adjustable telescopic support frame, all spans can be realised with centimetre precision. In addition, the calotte bearing allows easy adaption to the longitudinal and lateral inclinations of the superstructure. The heavy-duty truss girder can be quickly assembled by means of fitting pins.

The compatibility with the Variokit heavy-duty shoring tower through the VRB main beam, facilitates optimised solutions in the heavy-duty shoring sector, whilst the optional Peri Up scaffolding in the bottom section provides completely safe working conditions.

The Variokit construction kit has also been used successfully for bridge structures with different superstructure cross-sections. With new components for the longitudinal direction of the balanced cantilever equipment, up to 5.75 m long segments can be concreted. In the transverse direction, existing system components are used. Thus Peri achieves a maximum level of adaptability for a wide range of bridge sections. Furthermore, the moving procedure to the next concreting section is now very practice-oriented. Then, thanks to a newly developed mechanical solution, the required manual work can be quickly carried out.

As all system components, with the exception of the tie technology, are available in the Peri rental parks, the balanced cantilever unit is also extremely cost-effective with Variokit. All modules incidentally can be re-used for future projects without requiring any further adaptation – the majority even for other types of civil engineering structures.

In addition, for shuttering of bridge cantilevered parapets and for their refurbishment, Peri has developed the new VGK-2 parapet brackets. These are characterised by a low individual component weight of a maximum 22 kg and a high degree of flexibility for adapting to different parapet geometries. Because the brackets can be

Peri’s formwork solutions for civil engineering

mounted and aligned while positioned on the platform, this improves work safety. The completely enclosed decking, side protection as well as anchoring with general building inspectorate approval guarantees safe utilisation. The bracket makes a very

convincing and impressive case during refurbishment work - firstly, as a working area for dismantling operations and subsequently as the basis for the formwork of the new cantilevered parapet. n

Enquiry: [email protected]

After the introduction of Variokit heavy-duty shoring tower in 2010, the next logical step was taken by Peri with this year’s presentation of the matching heavy-duty truss girder. This not only carries heavy loads over wide spans but also takes into consideration the requirements of daily jobsite operations.

Left: The Variokit heavy-duty shoring tower has been used on numerous construction sites including bridge structures. The new heavy-duty truss girder has been optimally adapted to suit the design and load bearing capacity of the heavy-duty shoring tower.

Below: The lightweight Variokit VGK-2 parapet brackets were specially developed for formworking and refurbishment operations on short bridge superstructures. Assembly of the brackets is fast, simple and safe.

Doka’s SKE100 automatic climbing formwork is known for its fast cycle times and great versatility; its modular design concept makes it possible to craft individualised, cost-effective and safe solutions for any type of structure. Recently the company has developed a more advanced version that adds and optimises a number of important details. The new SKE100 plus is available in three practical standard versions - with travelling units, with rising working platforms or with a mast system. The latter is a new development specially for shafts and structures being built on confined, cramped sites.

SKE100 plus is a highly efficient system-based ‘construction kit’. There are no restrictions on how its parallel climbing units can be planned, so the system can be adapted to any shape of layout and any structure height, even where there are varying wall inclinations and wall-returns. The improved standard solutions provide a generously sized workspace on shaft formwork units, for example. In the design variant with super-top-level work-platforms, they help work move ahead swiftly, efficiently and safely in all situations where the forming and rebar operations need to be ‘de-linked’. The high formwork-platform scaffolds make it possible to place rebar in advance of other operations.

Doka optimises automatic climbing formwork system

The all-round enclosure lets work take place in safety, unaffected by weather conditions. The system’s integral platforms, stair towers and ladders ensure further safety. Several parallel climbing units can easily be repositioned at a time, by push-button radio remote-control.

SKE100 plus frees up craneage, as even high payloads can stay on the platforms during the climbing operation. It is also possible to integrate platforms for concrete-placing booms in the system. Climbing takes place all-hydraulically right from the very first casting step, meaning that no crane is needed at any time. What’s more, the climbing units can be cycled very flexibly, leading to optimised construction sequences, with the climbing units always firmly attached to the structure – even while being climbed.

In addition, SKE100 plus is fully compatible with the SKE50 plus system, and is already performing successfully on high-rise projects in Germany and Italy - on the TaunusTurm, a 170 m skyscraper rising in the centre of Frankfurt, Germany and on the Torre Intesa Sanpaolo, a 166 m high-rise building in Turin, Italy. Its compatibility with Doka’s framed and timber-beam formwork systems makes SKE100 plus a versatile solution for high-rise projects. n

Waste reduction and disposal represents a serious problem especially on restructuring and demolition jobs. Now waste materials from construction sites can be crushed and reused on job sites with Simex CB and CBE series rotor crusher buckets.

Simex crusher buckets can be fitted on excavators, skid-steer loaders, wheel loaders and backhoe loaders. These buckets load materials just like a standard bucket and release them (after being crushed) to the desired point.

Waste materials that can be crushed include rubble, bricks, concrete even with steel reinforcement, natural aggregates, tiles and asphalt slabs. The rotor crushing system (a Simex patent) can handle materials with earth, wood, wet and deformable materials.

Simex products are marketed in Southeast Asia and the Far East by IPE-Eagle Pte Ltd, which has offices in various countries. n

Bomag has improved its BPR reversible plates with a new design. The black steel ‘face’ of the machines is highly resistant to scratches, damage or impacts. Furthermore, the all-round protection hood provides excellent protection against vandalism. Despite the large cover, all maintenance points are easily accessible for regular inspections at any time through the service flaps; tools are not required. Having just four bolts, the engine area can be accessed quickly and easily for servicing. Bomag is now offering the operating hours counter for the new reversible plates as standard; this is a particularly useful for maintenance and servicing, which in turn allows for a reduction in service and repair costs.

Bomag has also extended its BPR portfolio with the new BPR 50/55 D and BPR 60/65 D models. Equipped with powerful Hatz

FAR 330 piling rigShantui has developed three new products for the Southeast Asian market, including the SD32Plus bulldozer, SL50WN wheel loader and GT55 truck-mounted crane.

The SD32Plus bulldozer is part of the new ‘Plus’ line of upgraded bulldozer models that Shantui has begun rolling out this year. The ‘Plus’ model bulldozers feature upgraded operator interfaces, new Cummins engines and a more robust hydraulics system. The SD32Plus is Shantui’s most technologically advanced bulldozer yet. In addition, the SL50WN is the latest version of Shantui’s 5 t wheel loader, the SL50W. Shantui said the SL50W is also the company’s best-selling wheel loader model.

The other new product is the GT55 truck-mounted crane, one of the first machines produced by the Shantui-Manitowoc joint venture that was formed in January of this year.

Shantui’s concrete and road machinery products have also been performing well in Southeast Asia recently. The HJC5410THB-56 truck-mounted concrete pump and HZN40B concrete batching plant are the company’s latest concrete machinery products, manufactured by the Shantui Chutian subsidiary company. The SR14D-3 is an upgraded version of the popular SR14D tandem roller, released this year, and is also a top seller in the Southeast Asian market, according to Shantui. n

VSL Engineers (M) Sdn Bhd is using Enerpac flat jacks to fit into tight spaces where lifting reliability is paramount on projects such as the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transport system now being constructed over a three-line 150 km rail network, which will expand and integrate existing rail networks and relieve severe traffic congestion in the greater Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan district, Malaysia.

VSL teamed up with Enerpac more than 20 years ago to develop an inventory of Enerpac heavy lifting equipment that includes hundreds of heavy lift cylinders, including the low height jacks and CLP series pancake lock nut cylinders, available in capacities from 60 to 500 t. These cylinders, designed for optimum safety on heavy lifts, use the power and precision of high-pressure (700 bar) hydraulics to pack more power into more compact tools that are more compact, lighter and easier to position precisely in confined situations. They have proven to be mainstays of VSL Engineers heavy lift activities over scores of the major projects undertaken in Malaysia, including bridges, buildings, ground engineering, repair, strengthening, preservation and special structures.

Enerpac cylinders are used where their compact power can be readily positioned to manoeuvre vertical or horizontal components, such as transom segments being positioned to the left or right. Enerpac low-profile jacks, a type used globally on bridge, rail and road building projects, fit into the confined space between bridge piers and decks, where they may be mounted on plinths by VSL and where their ability to withstand lateral deflection is highly valued.

Further safety assurance is being gained by VSL Engineers through its recent acquisition of additional Enerpac rigid steel torque wrenches. These ergonomic low-profile high precision designs, available in both square and hexagon drives, help ensure consistent, rapid torquing of bolts while eliminating the hazard, delay and damage that can be associated with manual methods of bolt fastening.

VSL relies on Enerpac to complete Malaysia’s major projects

Enerpac torque wrenches include W-series hexagon wrenches, which weigh from only 1.4-12 kg yet have excellent and precisely repeatable torque from 2,712 to 47,450 Nm. They are complemented by the equally versatile S-series of double-acting square drive wrenches, which extends from 2.7 to 31 kg with outputs of 1,898 to 34,079 Nm.

Enerpac products deployed by VSL Engineers are supplied and serviced by JCT Engineering Services, Enerpac Malaysia distributor, which provides high pressure/customised hydraulic solutions. The company’s products include hydraulic cylinders, powerpacks, hand pumps, air pumps, hydraulic pullers, gauges and system components. JCT also caters to demanding applications and engineering solutions over a wide range of markets and industrial segments. n

Linnhoff recently commissioned a unit of Lintec containerised asphalt plant (CSD1500) at a job site near an active volcano in Albay, the Philippines. The plant is working to provide continuous asphalt hot mix for road works in the vicinity. According to Linnhoff, the volcano was spewing volcanic ash periodically throughout the plant installation and eventually erupted a few days after commissioning of the plant was completed.

The company said site location near an active volcano will not affect routine plant operations. With the containerised asphalt plant, all components are inbuilt into container units. The container housing and cladding protect the plant components from volcanic ash or dust lingering in the surrounding air; they also protect the plant from rain and other harsh climates such as thunderstorms, sandstorms, snow and hail. The containerised asphalt plant is thus weather-proof.

In the worst case scenario that the first signs of the volcano erupting is detected, the CSD1500 can be dismantled and transported within a short period of time as all containers are modular-based 100 percent ISO sea containers. This factory pre-wired design results in ease of transportation, installation and re-installation of the plant.

In addition, the CSD1500 provides great plant security, excellent pollution control and high savings on plant operating costs. The plant has a lockable main access that provides security against unauthorised access, theft or vandalism. The Bag House pollution control

system and its containerised structure offer excellent air and noise pollution control, leading to a more environment-friendly plant operation.

With the dual-function Lintec/Linnhoff Screen Drum system, overall operating costs are reduced from the absence of hot elevator and vibrating screens, by eliminating related high maintenance costs that are regularly required for these two items. There are also savings derived from more efficient fuel consumption due to the shorter route

of aggregates flow from cold hoppers to the hot bins.

The CSD1500, featuring a capacity of 100 tph, is among Lintec’s various containerised asphalt plants. Lintec GmbH & Co KG is a German manufacturer of asphalt mixing plants, said to be the first to manufacture asphalt plants in 100 percent ISO sea containers. As its subsidiary, Linnhoff Technologies is responsible for the Asia Pacific region from its head office in Singapore. n
