Learn to Live, Live to Learn

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is hard to believe that this is just the second week back with

all the activities at school all ready.

This week I thought I might share with you the process the

school follows if a child has an accident at school just so you

understand in case this happens to your child. The school

provides playground cover from 8:55 each morning, which is

1/2 hour before school commences.

At recess there is additional cover in a number of areas and

many of the Learning Support Officers also work in the

playground at this time either with a focus on a particular

child, running specific programs for a small group of students

or assisting teachers with general supervision. This process is

repeated at lunch after students have completed eating their

lunch. During eating time they are required to sit and eat in

their grade areas and supervision is provided at this time. If a

student has not finished eating when the play bell goes they

can stay seated in the area until they are ready to play.

If a child is feeling unwell or has an accident during class time

the teacher will send them to the office with a friend and a

note advising the office staff of this. The administration team

at school have completed first aid training and assist students

in the sick bay area. (The sick bay is monitored by a camera

which is on screen in the front office.) Some children are

regular visitors and the staff give them time to sit or lay down,

depending on what their condition is. If a child is very unwell

then a phone call is made home or to the emergency contact

number provided by you to the office. (This is one reason why

it is so important that you notify the school of any change of

details.)

School staff are not allowed to administer medication that

does not come with a letter from the doctor stating how much

and at what time the medication should be administered. If

your child needs medication for an illness you will need to

bring the letter and sign a form at the office before staff can

provide this service for you. At no time can children carry

medication in their bag or on their person in case it is taken by

another child. An Asthma puffer or Epipen being the only

exceptions after a Request to Carry Medication form has been

completed.

If a child has an accident in the playground and it is of a minor

type, then an ice pack is provided and the child will rest for a

few minutes. If they still complain of pain or there is swelling

then parents will be called. If there is an injury to the head or

teeth parents will always be called.

If there is an injury of a very serious nature that requires an

ambulance, the ambulance will be called and at the same time

you will be called. If you are unable, due to distance (if you are

out of town and there is no way the emergency contact can

get to the school), a staff member will accompany the student

to the hospital until someone arrives. The school pays for

ambulance cover and any student requiring this is at no cost

to parents.

All injuries are recorded in the sick bay register and any

medication provided is also recorded, stating the time and

dosage administered.

If the injury is significant the school notifies the Department of

Education, work injury hot line and the teacher in charge

completes an accident form which details the time, the

location and the background to the injury and also collects

statements from witnesses and the injured person

themselves. Sometimes the injured person’s statement is

completed when they return to school.

Please remember though that there have been times when a

student does not inform a staff member they have been

injured and the first we know is when we get a phone call

from a parent. This is out of our control.

Whilst we hope you never need to use this information you

can rest easy knowing there is a comprehensive system in

place.

Regards

Sandra Sandra Bradley

Ulladulla Public School runs a Volunteer Reading Program to assist children in their reading. The school is looking for interested parents and community members to volunteer to train as reading tutors. Each tutor would be assigned particular students that they would assist each week. Full training and on going support will be given to all tutors by the Support Teacher, Bev McCarthy.

If there is anyone who would like to volunteer two hours of their time (9.25- 11.25), any day of the week, or would like more information about the project please contact Bev McCarthy at Ulladulla Public School on 4455 1649. A meeting will be held on Friday 12th May at 2.15 pm in the school library to discuss the program. Tutoring will commence Monday 22nd May. It is extremely satisfying to assist a child learn to read and a few hours of your time could really help some students.

Forest Feral Membership

Forest Ferals, along with parents and teachers, make up Ulladulla Public School’s Environmental Council.

Any parent or student from Years K- 6 can join. All students enrolled in the school,

automatically become a ‘Forest Feral’.

All members are able to participate in any of our competitions, activities, excursions as well as voting (Year 3-6 only) for future councilors at the end of the year

Please note: Once you are a member you remain a member for the rest of your time at the school.

You don’t have to join every year. The ‘Forest Ferals’ have badges that can be worn on their hat or shirt as a sign of their commitment to the ‘Ferals’. Students DON’T have to purchase or have a badge to be a member. It is their choice if they wish to purchase a badge or not.

The Forest Feral badges are on sale to all ‘Forest Ferals’. A note was sent home with the eldest child in the family. The cost is $3.00.

Excursions using private vehicle transportation

When parents are transporting students (including their own) to school based excursions using private transportation, drivers are

required to fill out documentation in the office. It is important that as a school we are following Department of Education Policy

which states that:

written permission from the parent(s) or caregiver(s) of the student(s) being transported is obtained

the driver is licensed and, if issued with a provisional licence, complies with any relevant peer passenger conditions

the vehicle is registered

the number of passengers in the vehicle does not exceed the number of seatbelts

current driver's licence and car registration details (car registration receipt) are sighted by the school prior to giving permission for students to be transported in the vehicle

Principals must ensure that all parents, caregivers or volunteers who transport students in cars complete a Working with Children Check – Declaration for volunteers and contractors, along with 100 points of ID, prior to the excursion

Please help us in following this policy by providing the necessary documentation. We know that this may cause frustration but these policies are put into place to ensure the safety of all children in our care. We thank you for your understanding and support in ensuring that we can continue to provide transport to and from excursion venues. A copy of the Working with Children Check – Declaration for volunteers and contractors form and the Proof of Identity checklist are available for download from the Notes Home, Downloads section of the school website, under the General School Notes tab.

School Attendance If your child has a reoccurring illness and is deemed as often not attending - we, as a school, have a responsibility to ensure that all absences are explained. Some measures that we may take include:

consultation with parents regarding the health care needs of the student.

medical certificates are sought for the absences.

where there are ongoing concerns, approval is sought from parents to contact the student's doctor so the school has all relevant information regarding the student's health care needs. Strategies are developed to ensure regular attendance at school. Teachers will be monitoring their class attendance rolls over the coming weeks. If you receive a letter home needing to explain an absence or requesting medical certificates for further absences please ensure that you return the letters with the necessary details so that we can ensure accurate record keeping. Your support is appreciated.
