ReportfromourPresident–LindyBonserAsthisyeardrawstoanend,Iwonderwhereithasgone.Myson,Alexheadsintoyear11in2017soI,likeAlexamlookingforwardtotheChristmasbreak.Havingbothchildrenstillathome,IreallylookforwardtotheChristmasfestiveseason.CaitlinhasbeeninvitedtosingattheUlladullaChristmasCarolsattheCivicCentrethisyearsopracticearoundthehousehasalreadybegun.Ilovelisteningtohersing.
SueCaine(PastPresident)kindlyofferedtohostthe‘Welcometonewmembers’andthe‘Thankyoutosupportmembers’lunchatherhomeonTuesday22November2016.UnfortunatelyIhadtomissthiseventasIhadfinalexamsatTafethatday.
Iwouldliketosincerelythankthosememberswhogivesomuchoftheirtimetoourhugegardenclub.Everymonthatleast32memberscometoCivicCentreearlyonthemorningofeachmeeting.Theysetuptablesandchairsforthingslikeactivities,trips,coffeemorningsingardens,raffles,gems,competitions,tradingtables,library,morningtea,coffeestations,welcomestandsandluckydoor.Ifyouaddupallthesethingsupandthenmultiplythembytwoorthreemembersthatalonespeaksvolumesabouttheenthusiasmandtruecommitmentshownbysomanymembers.Thankyou.
Iwasluckyenoughtogoonsomeofourovernighttripsthisyear.Onbothtripstherewasadifferentgroupofmembers.Ienjoyedthemsomuch;I’mlookingforwardtohearingwhatDebbieKendallandValariehaveuptheirsleevesfor2017,nottomentiontheGCAConventioninNovember.
OurmonthlycommitteemeetingsareheldatJohnandHeatherSteadman’sbeautifulhomeandgarden.SincegoingtotheirhomeI’vewatchedtheirgardenevolveandgrow.Theyhaveworkedsohardconstructingpathsandwoodenedgedgardenbedswithcarefullychosenplantings.AftereachmeetingIoftenstaybackjusttoadmireandtalkaboutthelatestadditiontotheirlovelygarden.
Andfinallyabigthankyouourhardworkingcommittee.Withoutyoutheclubwouldnotbewhatitistoday,strongandexciting.Thankyouforyourdedicationandbeliefthatwecanonlygetbiggerandbetter.MerryChristmasanddrivecarefully.Gardeningisgreat.

Didyouknow…Rosesarerelatedtoapples,raspberries,cherries,peaches,plums,nectarines,pearsandalmonds.Rosehips(theberry-likefruitstructureofrose)ofsomespeciesofroseareamongsttherichestsourceofVitaminC.Theyareusedtomakejams,jelliesandalsobrewedfortea.InancientEgyptroseswereconsideredassacredflowers.AncientEgyptiansusedthemduringfuneralstoformabeautifulwreathonthetombstone.TheflowerwasusedtoservetheGoddessIsisinasacredritual.

BunningsBBQUpdateThankyousomuchtoallourgardenclubmemberswhohavevolunteeredthisyearfortheBunningsBBQroster.Itissowonderfulyouallgaveupyourtimetohelpfundraiseforourclub.Wealwayshaveabitoffunanditsgreattointeractwiththepublicandsometimeshavefunwiththemaswell.WeareproudtorepresentourclubtothepublicandtheBunningsstaffaswell(theyseemtoloveoursausagesandwiches).Westillhave2moreBBQ’sthisyear–

SeasonaltipsfortheSummerGarden…(ByHAZELKING–takenfromtheOurGardenspublicationbyGCASummer2016/17)Hedgesandtopiaryneedregulartrimmingtokeepinshapeduringpeakgrowthperiods.Wateringandmulchingareimportantwhenestablishinghedgestocountertheclosegrowththatpromotesrootcompetition.Bulbs–Springbulbswillhavedieddown.Perhapsclumpsneedseparating–extrascanbegiventofellowgardeners.Ifgrowingbulbsthatrequireliftingegtulips,crocus,hyacinths,remove,leavetodrythenplaceinpaperbag.Sixweekspriortoplantingstoreintherefrigeratorcrisper.Markbulbpositionsinthegardentoavoiddamagewhenpreparingsoilforfutureplanting.Ifreplanting,digincompostandmanure,addmulchafterwateringIorpreferablyafterrain.Lawns.Inanareawherehighhumidityproducesfungalproblems,waterearlyinthemorning.Lawnsneedagoodsoakingtoensuredeeprootdevelopment–donotwaterlightlyandoften.Grassmaybrowninsummerbutwillreturntogoodcolourwhentheweathercools.Addlawnclippingstocompost.Prunespringfloweringshrubse.g.azalea,viburnum,may,abelia.Takecuttingsoftheseplants,alsoautumnandwinterfloweringcamellias.Donotpruneshrubswithattractiveautumnberries.Lavendersanddaisiesflowerforlongperiodsbutneedpruningwhenapproximately70%offlowersaredead.Rosesbenefitfromsummerpruning;considershapewhenpickingforindoordecoration.Pests.Withtheonsetofwarmweather,pestsareontheincrease;watchforaphids,scale,mealybugs,lawngrubs,citruspestsanddealwithimmediately.Azalealacebugandredspidermitethriveinshadyareasastheleavesprotectthepestsfromrain.Fertilisevegetablesandflowingannualsfortnightlywithaquickactingproduct.Toencouragemoreflowers,removedeadones.Applyproducttohydrangeasforpinkorblueblooms.Visitnurseriestoseeoldfavouritesandmanynewplantvarieties.Inthevegetablesectionyoumaybeattractedtopurpletomato,cauliflowerandbean,pinkandorangeaubergine,burgundyokra.Newperennialsareavailable,theseareagreatassetbothasgardenplantsandforindoordecoration.Breedershavebeenbusyproducingmanynewvarietiesofpopularnativessolookoutforthegreatselectionofwaratahs,kangaroopaws,grevilleasandrainforesttreessuitableforsmallandlargegardens.Considerplantingashade-formingtreetositunderinthesummermonthsandelevatethecanopybyremovingthelowerbranches.Theresultisalivingumbrella.“Whoeverdiscovershowtocontroltheweatherwillhavedestroyedthelastsafetopicofconversationinoroutofthegarden”(HorticulturistHazelKingMAIHisamemberoftheBerryGardenClubandisaregularwriteofSeasonalTipsfortheGCAMagazine)

Harvest• Keeppickingfromfruit-producingplantssuchascucumbers,tomatoes,andbeans.Thiswill
encouragemorecrops.• Ifyou’regoingawayonholidays,arrangeforsomeonetoharvestyourproduce.Notonlywill
thiskeepcropscoming,goodhygienealsohelpspreventspreadofpestsanddiseases.Diginoldbenplantstoaddnitrogentothesoil.

• Someofourexoticsareusedfordecorationinthehomeduringthefestiveseason.Someoftheseplantsareagapanthus,hydrangeasandlilies.Somepeoplelikerosesororchidsbutsometimesitisgreattohaveachangefromwhatyouwouldnormallyhave.
• IfyouareaNewZealander,youmayliketousetheNewZealandChristmasBushwithit’sscarletflowersandbrightgreenleaves.Thereisalsoonespecieswithgreenandgoldleaves.InNewZealandtheyarecalledPohutukawa’s.
• Personally,IliketheNSWChristmasBush(cerapetalumgummiferum).IntheearlydaysofEuropeansettlementinNSW,theresidentswereinterestedintheredflowersofthisplant.WhatachangefromthegreenbranchestheywereusedtobackinEngland.TheNSWChristmasBushneedsawell-drainedsoilinwhichtogrow.
• Justhadathought.Wouldn’ttheredBottlebrush(callistemoncitrinus)andFlannelflowers(acetinotushelianthi)makeagreatarrangement?IfIhadsomegrowinginmybackyard,I’dgiveitatry.
• AnotherofourChristmasplantsistheChristmasBell(blandfordianobilis).UnfortunatelytheseflowersarenotreadilyavailablebutthelittlewaxybellslookgoodwiththeChristmasBush.
• ThereisalsotheChristmasOrchid(calantheaustralis).Thisisagroundorchidbutcanbegrowninapotinashadedarea.
Whateverflowersyouuse,haveanenjoyableChristmasandaHappyNewYear.Thought:Thegreatestgiftisfoundintheheartsoftruefriends.

CrookwellGardensFestivalWeekendThankyoutoour42memberswhojoinedusfora'briskandwindy'(ifnotfreezing!)triptotheCrookwellregiontovisit8wonderfulandvariedgardens(justcouldn'tfitthe9thonein)duringtheCrookwellGardenFestival.ItwasagreattripwithverycomfortableaccommodationprovidedtousattheGoulburnHeritageMotorInn,includingafunHawaiiannightwitheveryoneenthusiasticallyjoininginforthetheme.OnarrivalinCrookwellwestoppedattheGardenLovers'MarketatStBartholomew'sChurchbeforemakingourwaytoourfirstgardenvisit.The8gardenswedidvisitoverour2daysfeaturedavarietyofgardenstylesfromramblingcountry-stylegardenssuchasCasaDellaPace,McAlisterandBowoodtothelovelyoldBindaMillanditsgarden.Thesegardenswereallwellpresentedandgreatforjustwanderingaroundandenjoying.WillowtreeSculptureGardenwasaramblingbush-stylegardeninthevillageofLagganwhichfeaturedmanysculpturesbytheownersandalsoincludedworksofartscatteredthroughoutthegardenfortheirinauguralSculptureExhibition.Wewerealsoentertainedbyacoupleofyoungfellowsprovidingamusicalbackdrop.Tofinishofftheweekend,onSundaywevisited3towngardensinCrookwell.Thesewereparticularlyinterestingastheyaresetincomparativelymediumtosmallgardenareas.ThesewereallbeautifullypresentedandsuchalovelywaytofinishoffourvisittotheCrookwellregion.ThanksalsototheownersoftheCrownTheatreCafeinCrookwell,whereweenjoyedagreek-stylelunchonSunday.AbigthankyoutooureverpatientCoachDriver,SeanBray,fromUlladullaBusLines.Hehadastressfulweekendwithatemperamentalcoachandagroupofeagertravellerswhowereintentonfillingupanyspareroomunderthecoachwithbricabrac,plantsandsculpturesthathadtobeseentobebelieved!BigthanksandhugstoDeirdreMcloughlin,CrookwellGardenFestival/GoulburnGardenClub,forallheradvice,organisationandhelpinputtingthisweekendtogether,andtoValerieTranterandMarieNolanwhosteppedintohelpfinalisethistripwhilewewereoverseas.Thankyouladies.
