UGM Harvest CelebrationThis year our church has been asked to host one of the 50 tables of eight
people at Union Gospel Mission’s annual Harvest Celebration. At the event on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Keizer Civic Center, we’ll get to hear an update on the state of UGM from President Mike Rideout; be
encouraged by stories of changed lives told by men and women who have participated in UGM’s recovery program; be challenged and inspired by
UGM’s special guest speaker, Mike Yankowski, author of Under the Overpass; and enjoy musical entertainment by local artist Logan Martin. Dessert will be served, too!UGM’s goal is to raise $20,000 which will provide over 10,000 nutritious holiday season meals and care for hungry, hurting, and homeless men, women, and children in our community.Wouldn’t it be great to get eight or more people from our church to attend this awesome event? A suggested $25 donation per guest would be greatly appreciated by UGM. I’ve read Mike Yankowski’s book, Under the Overpass; it’s going to be very interesting to hear him speak about his experience of being homeless and how we can better support these folks in our community who are hurting, homeless, and hungry. Call the church office to sign up.UGM has really appreciated FUMC’s partnership through our Saturdays of Service and our participation in their Walk for Hope and tutoring programs.
Choral Union If you are interested in singing with the church choir, fill out a Welcome & Communication Card with your contact information. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. See you there!
Handbells—new participants welcomeSalem FUMC’s Handbell Union meets for rehearsals on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Bells play in worship, usually on the third Sunday of the month, and for special services and events. We will be doing some collaboration this year with other Salem-Keizer area United Methodist churches and look forward to this new fellowship and service. New and returning members, please contact Shira at 503-569-1249 or <[email protected]> so we can confirm music choice and coverage for the first Bell Sunday in October.
Rehearsals begin for Advent Masterworks Rehearsals begin on Wednesday, Oct. 30, for the Advent Lessons and Carols (11:15 a.m. on Dec. 15). Anyone who enjoys choral singing, but may not be able to sing with the Choral Union on a regular basis, is invited to participate in this special presentation. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 8-9 p.m., with an extended rehearsal retreat on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and a final rehearsal on Friday, Dec. 13, from 7-9 p.m. For more information, contact Kerry Burtis through the church office.

thank you for your food donationsWe are very appreciative of your gifts to the Jason Lee Food Bank. The need continues to be at a high level. Thus far this year we have served 135 more families than at the same point one year ago. Even such a relatively small increase still required an extra 4 tons of food! Our God is truly amazing; the food was provided!
Your kindness is touching many lives. We thank you for being faithful sustainers of this ministry.
With Gratitude, Candace Nichols

Save your labelsQuestion: How can you eat something that’s good and good for you and support our United Methodist Women in their endeavors to help others?
Answer: Just eat FLAV-R-PAC, WESTPAC, or Santiam vegetables and fruit! Save the UPS bar code from the labels or frozen packages and deposit them in the big jar at the Welcome Center in the Dining Room or take them to the church office. That’s all there is to it! The UMW collects the labels and once a year sends them in to receive $.05 apiece for them. (It’s a lot easier than turning in cans.)
So, please help us: START EATING!

Hospitality Shines at Salem First UMC during Salem Sunday StreetsThe event, Salem Sunday Streets, is now just a warm memory, but appreciation needs to be expressed for all the people who came forth and expressed hospitality to the community of people who came out for the event!
People from Salem First UMC served lemonade, water, and cake; took people to the sanctuary for tours, and helped children and families ring the church bell! Most importantly, church members and friends were on hand to visit with people coming by on the sidewalk or stopping their bicycles for a quick refreshment stop. There was also a bit of ukulele strumming and some singing, just for fun!
Thanks goes to: Joan Zelmer, Emily Broussard, Mary Jo Keortge, Jean Corcran, Andrea Swinehart, Sally Edmiston, Jane Murch, Jim Murch, Charlie King, Mary Ann Robinson, Fran Eriksen, Wilbur Bluhm, Deanna Fitzpatrick, Gary Onstot, Bill Swanick, Terry Cole, Connie Bork, Bobby Ottis, Clark Shattuck, Katie Carpenter, Dan Pitney, Mike Boyd, Nancy Brik, Loxi Fitzgerald, Bill Cummins, Vern Barkell, and anyone whose name is not listed here who gave of their time and friendliness to those participants traveling by.
Thank you again for being outside ambassadors for The First United Methodist Church of Salem during the First Annual Salem Sunday Streets!

Support Adopt-a-bellIt’s been 10 years since the last time our fabulous set of bells was serviced! Our consistent busy playing schedule means that the handbells are showing the wear and tear. There are cracked handles, worn and broken mechanisms, and finish imperfections. Your support will allow us to ship the bells to the manufacturer across the country where they will be disassembled, cleaned and treated, and reassembled with new hardware. The bells will all then be “voiced” so they continue to sound good together. If we service the set now, we will maintain our warranty that saved us almost $900 last year when we had to replace a casting on one of the largest bells.Adopt a bell as a memorial gift, or to honor someone who deserves it. Check out the details after services in MICAH and the Carrier Room. Or just drop an additional gift in the offering with a note that it is for Adopt-a-bell, and who is being honored.Wing some angels; keep those bells ringing!
Mia Adjali Circle The Mia Adjali Circle will meet at the church in room 114 on Monday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome to attend. Please contact Connie Bork at 503-364-8623 for more information.

Changing the World, One life at a timeWorld Communion Sunday, Oct. 6
As Catrena Talbert was growing up, her father would always say, “There’s only one person you can trust in the military, and that’s the chaplain.”
That memory is one reason Talbert, 31, is now a certified chaplain. Another reason is the help she received from the Journey toward Ordained Ministry (JTOM) and Ethic Minority Scholarship programs, both funded by the World Communion Sunday offering.
A member of the National Guard, Talbert completed a one-year military Clinical Pstoral Education (CPE) assignment at Fort Gordon, GA in December and began a new job as a chaplain in a federal prison in Yazoo City, MS.
Gifts to the World Communion Sunday offering are crucial for nurturing diverse educated, trained leaders who can help make disciples of Jesus Christ and thus transform the world. Talbert credits The United Methodist Church for helping her get through tough times on her journey of eight years of education and training, including discrimination and discouragement to domestic violence and divorce, all while raising her young son, TJ.
Half of the offering provides Crusade Scholarships for international and U.S. racial- and ethnic-minority graduate students. Thirty-five percent of the receipts support Ethnic Scholarships for undergraduate students. Fifteen percent funds Ethnic In-Service Training Program scholarships for racial- and ethnic-minority persons seeking second careers in church-related vocations.
First UMC will be receiving our World Wide Communion special offering on Sunday, Oct. 6. Please mark any giving you would like to go this offering “World Wide Communion Offering” or use the special envelope that will be in available during worship that morning.
Thank you for your support.
Scholarships from World Communion Sunday offerings helped Catrena Talbert on her journey to become a certified chaplain. She prefers to help people one-on-one to being a pastor in a church.
