Weird weather patterns this spring and summer have taken their toll on some southern Min-nesota crops, but farmers could still see more, and better yields.
A wet and cold spring wreaked havoc on some farmers, forcing them to plant later in the season. But if the summer holds out, the crop may have a chance to re-cover.
“If we have a long summer or fall,” that would be great,” said Christian Lilienthal, Nicol-let County extension agriculture production systems educator. “at would compensate for the late spring.”
In July, 20 Minnesota coun-ties were named agricultural nat-
ural disaster areas, and farmers in those counties or adjacent to them can be eligible for federal as-sistance. One of the ways farmers can receive assistance is through the the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payment Program. To qualify, farmers in the designated counties must have a minimum of 10 percent production loss in a crop which accounts for at least 5 percent of the expected total farm revenue.
e wet spring experienced in southern Minnesota prevented some farmers from being able to plant part of their crops. Uni-versity of Minnesota extension agriculture production systems educator Diane DeWitte said that around 30 percent of the acreage in southeastern Minnesota could have gone unplanted.
Lilienthal said even though there may be less corn this year, there may be a higher yield. He said that timely weather during the pollination stage made it so some cobs may end up with more kernels. During a two-week pe-riod in July, there were cool con-ditions, which kept the silk from drying out and allowed more ker-nels to be developed.
Local farmer Robert Goettl, of Le Center, said the crop yield this year could either be way above, or way below the average. Goettl estimates there could be anywhere between 100 and 200 bushels har-vested per acre, the statewide pre-dicted average was 166.
“ere could be a lot of vari-ability in the harvest,” said Goetll.
Robert Goettl inspects one of his corn cobs. While some farmers may have been able to plant less crops, a good pollination period may yield more kernels. (James Stitt/Le Center Leader)

Agriculture A Way of Life
Nicollet County Bank Ag Lending Offi cers Ken Rossow and Gary Miller both grew up on farms in southern Minnesota.Working in the fi eld and with livestock, they learned at an early age what farming is all about. They continued their agricultural education through universities, classes and agricultural schools.Nicollet County Bank is proud to have two lending offi cers with their educational backgrounds as well as their genuine knowledge and deep interest in farming and agricultural lending. They are active in our community and go the “extra mile”to serve our customers.

We’re proud of our local farmers for the service you provide to our community and our country.
Celebrating 130 Years!
Goettl said that the late plant might not hurt if the weather for the rest of the year bodes well. But, he said, the hot 90 degree days in late August have hurt the crops.
“e heat is really getting to them now. They are just suffer-ing in the heat,” he said late last month.
For the crops to really thrive this year, the late summer and early fall is very important. Farm-ers are hoping that the rst frost is still a long way out, and are pray-ing for rain.
“Moisture is going to make a big dierence here on out,” said Goetll.
Minnesota farmers are expect-ed to harvest slightly smaller corn and soybean crops this fall than last year, in part because elds in some parts of the state have been hurt by too much spring rain, followed, by streak of cool tem-peratures.
Still, the 1.4 billion bushels of corn that the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates Minnesota farmers should harvest would be the second largest crop in the state’s history. Soybeans should yield about 272 million bushels,
about an average crop.Nationwide, corn crop will
be the largest ever at 13.8 billion bushels, according to the USDA estimate. e U.S. soybean har-vest should be the third largest in history at about 3.3 billion bushels.
As a result, there should be plenty of grain this fall, which would send the prices farmers receive for their crops lower.
Reporter James Stitt can be reached at 931-8572 or follow him on Twitter @LCL_j_stitt. Minnesota Public Radio News contributed to this story.
Salvageable: ough last stretch of season is important, crops are ‘suering’ in late-summer heat, farmer says

CORN AND SOYBEAN USESSoybeans• Soybean oil is used in cooking and
frying foods. Margarine is a product made from soybean oil. Salad dressings and mayonnaises are made with soybean oil.• Some foods are packed in soybean
oil (tuna, sardines, etc.) Baked breads, crackers, cakes, cookies and pies usually have soybean oil in them.• Biodiesel fuel for diesel engines
can be produced from soybean oil by a simple process called transesterication. This process removes the glycerine from the oil, leaving soy biodiesel. Soy biodiesel is cleaner burning than petroleum-based diesel oil. Its use reduces particulate emissions, and it is non-
toxic, renewable and environmentally friendly.

Corn• Around 80 million acres of land are
planted to corn, with the majority of the crop grown in the Heartland region.• Most of the crop is used as the main
energy ingredient in livestock feed.• Corn is also processed into a
multitude of food and industrial products including starch, sweeteners, corn oil, beverage and industrial alcohol, and fuel ethanol.• The United States is a major player
in the world corn trade market, with approximately 20 percent of the corn crop exported to other countries.
