Zainal holds a Bachelor Degree
in Civil Engineering (Hon) from
Un i ve r s i t y o f Tenneesse ,
Knoxvi le in USA. He was
previously attached with PATI
Berhad since 1989 to 2000,
executing construction, National
Highway Projects and other PWD projects in
Malaysia. He was Project Manager for Gurgeon,
Katputli Highway project, commencing from
December 1997 until December 2000. He also
held a position of General Manager in a
Malaysian Company. His last posting was in
Kolkatta as a Senior Project Manager.
Head of Finance, Gan Chong Shyan, a
Malaysian, was appointed on June 15, 2008
succeeding Rozaifee Abu Zahasim (pic). CS Gan
is a member of the Malaysian Institute of
Accountants and a fe l low
member of the Malaysian
Institute of Taxation and was
trained as an auditor with one of
the top international accounting
firm. He has over 13 years of
extensive experience in financial management
and planning, corporate and legal affairs. His
directorship in other public companies is in Latexx
Partners Berhad, Gunung Capital Berhad.

succeeded Vijayashankar Thirunavakarasas
(pic) on October 17, 2008. She comes with
approximately 23 years of
working experience in the fields

Despite the continuing economic gloom Country Manager, Zainal Fitri, is determined to drive UEDI forward
starting with a number of tenders. Times are tough but UEDI need not suffer says Zainal Fitri. There are sufficient
earthworks, infrastructures and buildings jobs in India. UEDI will slowly gain momentum as a main contractor for
National Highway Authority India (NHAI).

with a potential value of 4.61 crores.

4 DECEMBER 2008 The Project Management workshop on "Creating change through Project Management and the Changing Trends in Project Management" was facilitated by Mr. Zainal Fitri, Country Manager, for the benefit of all UEDI’s Project Managers and O & M Managers. Among the attendees were Project Manager, Sivanesan; O & M Manager - TT, Sivarajan; O & M Manager - TA, Wong Yoke Sum; Project Manager -"KSTP-1, Lim Swee Goan, Plant Manager- KSTP - 1; Subri; Deputy Project Manager - UEM Ansal, Lucknow with guest Mr Subhash Bose Pillai, Minister Counsellor of Malaysia. A fruitful discussion was held on the present complexities, difficulties, uncertainties and risk encountered by the Project Management team. They were also reminded to adhere to the company's guidelines for material procurement, request for inspection (RFI) and monthly claims to client for Interim Payments (IPC). Zainal Fitri has confirmed UEDI will continually hold workshops for its staff.

This is a project to upgrade the existing single
carriageway along NH4 between Sira to Chitradurga
totalling 66.7km. This project was secured by UEM-
ESSAR JV through international open tender
Project Details:
• Client: National Highway Authority of India
• Scope: 66.7km dual 2 lane carriageway highway
• Project commenced in Mar 2002
• Contract completion on August 2004
• Contract Value: Rs. 253 Cr
2 # Grand Transport Improvement Road
project – 1C Etawah to Sikandra
This is a project to upgrade the existing single
carriageway along NH2 between Etawah to Sikandra
in Uttar Pradesh totalling 72 km. This project was
secured by Pati – Bhagheeratha Engineering Ltd JV
via an international open bid. The project is funded by
World Bank

3.! Kerala State Transportation Project 1
This is a project to widen & improve various roads
totalling 127km in the state of Kerala – Pkg KSTP-1,
funded by World Bank. This project is secured by
PATI-Bhagheeratha Eng JV through international
open tender

• Client: Public Works Department Kerala State
Government
• Scope: 127.17km dual lane carriageway
highway
• Project commenced in December 2002
• Contract completion on December 2005
• Contract Value: Rs. 215 Crores
4.! Bhiwandi Kalyan Shil Phata Highway
This is PLUS’s maiden BOT project in India. It
involves widening & improvement of road totaling 22
km in the State of Maharasthra. The construction
package was awarded to UEDI based on a selected
competitive tendering exercise

3. ANNUITY BOT HIGHWAY PROJECTS
WITH GMR
Two Annuity BOT highway projects by with
GMR-UEM JV (74:26) were secured after competitive
bidding. The Engineering Procurement Contract
(EPC) was awarded to UEM/UEDI. Both contracts
were completed in 2004. On 6 May 2005 UEDI and
GMR has signed a Memorandum of Settlement to
settle all dispute between two Companies during the
EPC stage.
UEM/UEDI is currently undertaking the
Operations & Maintenance Contract for 15 years
Concession Period (2019)

The Sushant Golf City,
Lucknow (Sushant) project was
awarded by ANSAL Properties &

API) to UEMB-ANSAL API JV

a further term of 2 years.

period 15th October to 31st October
2008. Other team members were

The audit scope covered various
areas including balance sheet review,
profit & loss account review, Project
closures for completed projects and
Operation & Maintenance activities.
The team attended the Deepavali
celebrations at Prestige Acropolis

India, UEDI
ensured some

sprees and a
day trip to
Mysore.

UEDI SETS UP ITS TENDER DEPARTMENT. The newly set up
Department comprising of Contract Manager, JJ Yap (pic left), Contract
Manager, Samir (pic centre) and Project Manager, Sivanesen (pic right) will
identify new jobs and oversee all tenders and bids submitted by UEDI and
its related companies.
A team of 18 PLUS, UEMB and OPUS staff arrived from Malaysia on a
costing exercise. They have set their eyes on two potential NHAI BOOT
jobs. Highway No 1 is from Delhi to Agra and Highway No 2 is from
Coimbatore to Mettapalayam.
The team led by UEDI’s Contracts Manager, Mr. Samir, and SR. ENG –
Planning & Contracts, Mr. Manoj, visited Kosi and Coimbatore on a
feasible study.
