The image of his

face was captured on

a security camera

during a break-in at a

house in Vanes last

year. During this break-in he was accompa-

nied by six other men.

According toDuPreez, this syndicate lead-

er was arrested last year, but set free after

the absence of an interpreter at court.

He was re-arrested last week, appeared in

court and apparently speaks fluent English.

Now it has also come to light that this man

has awaited trials for housebreaking in Cape

Town and Pretoria.

Du Preez says his property in Vanes had

been targeted three times by this syndicate.

He is adamant that residents from all areas

of Uitenhage should

be more pro-active

and join their re-

spective neighbour-

hood watch groups

to eliminate crimi-

nal activities.

There is clear evi-

dence that these

criminals scout the

area and property

before they act.

They know our

movements and are

very arrogant.

Du Preez said since residents commenced

with their neighbourhood watch activities

there has been no housebreaking during the

hours that they patrol.

We urge residents to join neighbourhood

watch patrols across the town. Together we

can eliminate criminal activities in our

midst. If we do not stand together things will

just get worse.

elson Mandela Metropolitan Universitys Vice-

Chancellors Scholarships will make the dreams of

30 top-achieving first-year students including the East-

ern Capes 2013 top matric Matthew Walker - come true.

This brings the total of Vice-Chancellor Scholars to 136

since this prestige bursary scheme was established in

2009. The R75 600-a-year scholarship introduced by

NMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz is given to

top performing school leavers from throughout the coun-

try.

The annual award continues for the duration of the stu-

dents course provided academic performance remains

of the highest standard.

NMMU Acting Deputy Director: Marketing Jo-Ann

Daniels says more than 2 000 top schools were targeted

countrywide to attract the best possible scholarship can-

didates.

Of the 30 recipients, 26 are from theEasternCape, three

are from theWestern Cape and one from Kwazulu-Natal.

Leading the pack isAlexanderRoadHighwith four recip-

ients from the class of 2013 followed by Riebeek College

in Uitenhage with three.

Representing all seven faculties, half of the recipients

registered for programmes in theFaculty ofBusiness and

Economic Sciences with the BCom programme being the

most popular.

Other study fields chosen by the VC Scholars include

Pharmacy, Construction Economics, Mechatronics and

Electrical Engineering.

The Scholarship also offers a development programme

and students have additional support of academic and ad-

Lions support estuaryproject

A

s a society, we generate waste at

an alarming rate which contrib-

utes directly to pollution of the only

surviving estuary in a metropolitan

area worldwide, the Swartkops Estu-

ary.

In Port Elizabeth the trail begins

above Uitenhage and moves steadily

down the Bay to the confluence that

is the Swartkops Estuary.

Pollution of the Swartkops River

through the presence of heavy met-

als, litter and general waste contrib-

utes to an ecological disaster impact-

ing river life forms such as mud and

sand prawn, pencil bait/razor clam,

bloodworms and tongueworm, said

Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage

Lions Club.

All these in turn contribute to hu-

man health issues which include E

Coli. Of lateHepatitisAhas been con-

tracted by a person through the in-

gestion of oysters from the river.

A major contribution to the

pollution is the litter deposited in the

Motherwell channel which in turn

acts as the source of an ecological

disaster in the making.

According to Wayne Rudman from

Uitenhage, who is the Zwartkops

Conservancy (ZC) Team Honorary

Marine Conservation Officer, ac-

tionshave consequences andweneed

to strive to develop a persons con-

science to differentiate between right

and wrong. Especially for those who

are not taught the basics thereof.
