It took the drivers of the 84 mainly air-cooled Volkswagen vehicles about 10 min-utes to park in the 60 diameter VW logo for-mation, during last Saturday’s VW Logo &Parade Day held at Despatch.

“It took me three hours of precise measur-ing to have the logo dimensions marked onthe field. And another hour to cut the grass,making it easier to park exactly on the rightspot. It was a mammoth of a task,” said Hen-nie du Toit, organiser of the VW Logo & Pa-rade Day.Obtaining correct dimensions of a largeVW logo, for the purpose of forming a hugeemblem with vehicles, was just as difficult.Du Toit had to figure it out himself, how andwhere to start. Luckily the legendaryVWhis-torian and archivist, John Lemon, gave himsome very handy tips.“We started, with my father simply stand-ing at the centre point, holding a 30 metreropewhichwas tied tomy lawnmower. I thencut the outer boundary.“From there I had to cut a ‘X’ inside the cir-cle, with the pointsmeeting the boundary 25.6metres apart.“And then the rest of the tricky measure-ments followed, which made me feel like atrue surveyor.”A local drone enthusiast, Melt Koekemoer,on the day of the event, kindly offered hisskills. Through these “eye-in-the-sky” visu-als, it was possible to have each vehicleparked with precision.

“Youknow, during Junea total of 2 000 vehi-cles participated in the 80th anniversary ofthe VW Beetle, which coincides with the 60thof Karmann Ghia as well as the 60th of theKombi. The celebrations were held in Johan-nesburg, not even where they were built.“Uitenhage is home to VW, that is why Iwant this VW Logo & Parade Day, one dayalso to have 2 000 ormore cars parked the VWway.”

Du Toit was ecstatic regarding the involve-ment of VWAutoPavilion, as well as the keensupport of various local businesses, andFrans Conradie primary school which madeits sports fields available for the event.Du Toit said; he would like to establish aVW Uitenhage Club, as it is home to thisiconic brand.“Ironically I drive a Toyota, but one dayowning a split-window VW Kombi is an ulti-

mate dream of mine. I remember a moviefrom my teenage years, ‘Kiepie and Kandas’inwhich an oldKombi featured. Tome a split-window Kombi is an icon, a kind of sex sym-bol. I idealize it as the ultimate way of experi-encing freedom on the road,” said Du Toit.

)The VW Logo & Parade Day was held inconjunction with the Rotary Club of Uiten-hage, to help raise funds for a minibus whichis needed at Rosa Munch Old Age Home.

The GAM 1000 once again marks three daysof excitement in the Gamtoos Valley withthe 28th annual angling competition from3-6 October.

It is hosted by the Gamtoos Angling Clubat the Big Fish Camping Grounds on theGamtoos River situated between JeffreysBay and Port Elizabeth.

Great prizes are up for grabs with the win-ner walking away with R10 000, the runner-up R5 000 and the angler placed third withR3 000.

On the Friday, October 2nd there will bea before-party for all anglers to get to knowone another. The measure and release meth-

odwill be applied during daytime and all fishwill be measured with no weighing.

All anglers must be entered prior the com-petition.

A spotless Chevrolet Roadster convertible,built at theGeneralMotors plant in Port Eliz-abeth during 1932, will be one of the uniquefour-wheelers at the Cars & Coffee Show onSaturday.

Except for the free coffee and biscuits of-fered to all attending the show at Speedy-quip, 3 Prince Alfred Road in North End, theinteresting stories awaiting to be told byowners of eccentric vehicles and bikes, willbe just as nice.

“This two seater Chevvy has been in thefamily for the past 60 years. One of our sons,

Jonathan or better known as ‘Don-Don’ in-herited it,” saidDerekElliot, organiser of theSpeedyquip Cars & Coffee Show.

Although Jonathan for the past 12 yearslives in St Petersburg, USA, the Chevvywithits “dickey seat” will be at the show. A vin-tage car tour will also be held in celebrationof Heritage Day. All cars up to and including1940 models will be eligible, and will leavePort Elizabeth on September 24th, for a threeday tour.

“Some of these cars have not been on theroad for years!” said Elliot.

A total of 22 cars have already entered forthe tour. These include two Ford Model Tcars (one is a 1912 model) as well as the yel-low 1932 Chevrolet Roadster.

“We are hoping thatmost of these cars willbe on display at our Cars & Coffee event thisSaturday,” said Elliot.
