DETAILED ITINERARYWELCOME TO SPAIN AND MOROCCODay 1 [1 October 2016]: BARCELONA (D)Your trip starts today with your arrival in Barcelona. Your arrival transfer will take you directly to your hotel. However, there really is much to see in Barcelona, so we recommend you arrive a few days before the tour starts in order to make a few discoveries of your own in your free time. A visit to the Picasso Museum is highly recommended, as is a trip up Montjuic Hill to see the 1992 Olympic Complex, a stroll down “Las Ramblas” and an optional visit to Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village). In the evening of Day 1 we meet our tour leader and our fellow travelling companions at a Welcome Meeting (this is usually at 6pm, but you will be advised as to the exact place and time in a notice placed near the reception at our hotel), where we are given a briefing of what lies ahead on our tour. This is followed by a welcome dinner in a local restaurant, where we can dine on local Catalan specialties and absorb the ambiance of this great city.

Overnight: Hotel Catalonia Centro. Standard room.

Day 2 [2 October 2016]: BARCELONA (B)This morning we explore the wonders of Barcelona - one of Europe’s most loved and dynamic cities. Our tour includes a visit to one of the architect Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces and a wonderful icon of the city – the Sagrada Familia church. Work on this church was already underway in 1882, but Gaudi took over the project in 1883 and transformed it into a structure incorporating his unique architectural style that includes a mix of Gothic and Modern-style forms with soaring and curvilinear columns and arches. Gaudi dedicated most of his life to the project until his death in 1926 and although still unfinished today this extraordinary site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our tour also sees us venture into the narrow medieval streets of the Gothic Quarter, home to the city’s impressive cathedral and the La Boqueria - a colourful public market dating back to 1217. The remainder of the afternoon and the evening is at leisure for you to make your own discoveries.Included activities:

§ Barcelona orientation walk (leader led) § Sagrada Familia admission § Barcelona Cathedral admission § Gothic quarter visit

Overnight: Hotel Catalonia Centro. Standard room.

Day 3 [3 October 2016]: VALENCIA (B)We bid farewell to Barcelona today and travel by private bus (4.5 hrs) to the city of Valencia, our base for the next two nights. Spain’s third largest city, Valencia has a distinct cultural identity with its own unique traditions

and many festivals and events are held here throughout the year. The city is charming with a wonderful old town centre that dates back 2000 years and showcases a harmonious mix of Roman, Muslim and Christian influences in its buildings and monuments, magnificent gardens and important historical sites. Along the way we will stop in Sagunto, located north of Valencia. A gentle walk along a zig-zagging path via an old Roman theatre takes us to Sagunto’s impressive ruined castle. Sitting at the crossroads of two Roman trading routes, the castle was a former stronghold and important commercial centre that dates back to 500 BC. After visiting Sagunto, we continue to Valencia.Included activities:

§ Sagunta Castle visitOvernight: Hotel Dimar. Standard room.

Day 4 [4 October 2016]: VALENCIA (B, L)This morning we take a short drive south of Valencia to discover the Albufera Lake, an important ecological site of the region. The lake is surrounded by beach, dunes, lagoons, wetlands and Mediterranean forest, and is home to six small islands. We visit the island of El Palmar and discover its typical ‘barraca’ houses. We travel by boat to the middle of the lake and learn about the important agricultural crop of the area, namely the local rice which we get to eat for lunch at a nearby restaurant. After lunch we visit Valencia’s major landmark - the City of Arts and Science, a large and futuristic museum complex designed by Calatrava. A one-hour guided tour will familiarise us with the exterior of the site, followed by free time to visit the interior. Included activities:

§ Albufera boat tour and lunch § City of Arts and Science guided tour

Overnight: Hotel Dimar. Standard room.

Day 5 [5 October 2016]: GRANADA (B)We leave Valencia today and travel by bus to Granada (6.5 hrs). Along the way we travel through the distinctive countryside of the region and pass through the university town of Murcia (cathedral with Baroque façade). We stop for a visit to the charming village of Guadix, home to over 2000 cave dwellings called ‘Barrio Santiago’. Typically found through the province of Granada, no town has more of these in abundance than Guadix. The thick walls of the cave homes help to insulate against the extreme heat of summers and the cool winters and temperatures are maintained at around 19 degrees Celsius year-round. In Guadix we visit the town’s imposing cathedral, built over a Moorish mosque in Gothic-Renaissance style. We then make our way to the city of Granada - one of the jewels of Andalucia.Included activities:

Day 6 [6 October 2016]: GRANADA (B, D)Highlight of our trip: Today we will experience a visit to the Alhambra Palace. Dating back to the 11th century and taking its name from the Arabic for ‘red castle,’ the Alhambra will challenge your visual senses with so much to entice. The dominating red fortress towers, sumptuous palace decor, multitude of architectural styles and magnificent gardens of the ‘Generalife’ (literally meaning ‘architect’s garden’) are all set against the majestic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains and compete for your eyes’ attention. From the soothing pathways, fountains, impeccably maintained hedges and pools to the centuries-old defensive walls, turrets and views overlooking Granada, our visit to this peerless attraction will not disappoint. Once inside the palace you are free to wander around and make your own discoveries. After lunch, our tour leader also takes us deeper into Granada’s Moorish ´Albaicin´ quarter and traditional tea house area. The view from this area, across to the Alhambra Palace is not to be missed – a picture postcard opportunity! Included activities:

§ Alhambra admission § Albaizan quarter visit

Overnight: Hotel Carmen. Standard room.

Day 7 [7 October 2016]: GRANADA (B, D)Today we walk in the historic Christian cathedral district and witness the Moorish influence first-hand. We wander through the ´Alcaiceria´ (old silk market area) and observe the craftworks on sale that include ceramics, marquetry and leather goods. In the evening, our tour leader will take you on a tapa tour of the city through some of Granada’s lively squares beneath the Alhambra Palace, something that Granada knows how to do well like no other city in Spain. There is a large student population from all over Spain here, lending a youthful ambiance and vibrancy in the city which is sure to be infectious. Or we can watch more flamenco if desired, a different style to what is offered in Seville. There are small flamenco taverns dotted around the city and if there are any programs or concerts on, we may need to pay a small cover fee to enter.Included activities:

Day 9 [9 October 2016]: SEVILLE (B)After breakfast this morning, we embark on a walking tour that will reveal to us many of Seville’s finest sights. With the knowledge of our local leader to guide us, we explore the labyrinthine maze of narrow cobblestoned streets and sun-speckled squares in Barrio Santa Cruz and El Centro. Situated on the banks of the Rio Guadalquivir, Seville has been inhabited since Roman times before being conquered in turn by the Visigoths, Moors and lastly the Christians, who led by Fernando III, known as ‘El Santo’ (The Saint), captured the city in 1248. This cultural diversity is richly portrayed in Seville’s architectural legacies to this day. A highlight of the morning is a visit to Seville’s magnificent Alcazar Palace - one of the country’s most impressive and historic monuments, as well as the lovely botanical gardens in Maria Luisa Park and the incomparable Plaza de España. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to further explore. We highly recommend visiting Seville Cathedral and Giralda Tower (entrance fees not included). Seville Cathedral is the third largest in the world and is home to Christopher Columbus’ elevated tomb. Tonight we can join the ‘sevillanos’ (locals) and soak up the ambiance of the city as it comes alive after dark.´Sevillanos´ dine late in general and perhaps you may wish to go to a flamenco show to round off the evening. Our guide will offer us some history of this unique dance style in the world of Spanish culture and musical heritage. Included activities:

§ Seville orientation walk (leader led) § Flamenco show

Overnight: Hotel Fernando III. Standard room.

Day 10 [10 October 2016]: GRAZALEMA (B)Today we transfer by private minibus to the beautiful Grazalema National Park and visit the splendid village of Zahara de la Sierra (1½ hours) on route. The spectacular location of this white-washed village, set as it is clinging to the edges of a dramatic mountain range, makes it visible for many kilometres and it has been called a ‘Moorish Eagle’s Nest’. We enjoy a visit through the village’s narrow alleyways, where we walk up to a 15th century watch tower and feast our eyes on the spectacular views over the Zahara-Gastor Resevoir and the surrounding countryside. We will also visit ´Molino El Vinculo´, a traditional, family-run ‘cold’ olive oil mill for a demonstration and tasting. Andalucia is the world’s largest producer of olive oil and the locals enjoy it with their breakfast, lunch and dinner! It is also the basis of Andalucia’s most famous contribution to world gastronomy - gazpacho. It´s then a short 30 minute drive over the stunning ´Puerto de las Palomas´ (Dove Pass) road, high up in the ‘sierras’ to the actual village of Grazalema. Before dinner we will have a short guided orientation of the village to get a feel for this charming little place. Included activities:

Day 11 [11 October 2016]: GRAZALEMA (B)Today is a rest day, if you wish. Alternatively you have the option of taking a nature walk into the ancient forests and hilly landscapes of the Grazalema National Park. The walk is led by your tour leader and caters to both light walkers and those seeking a more adventurous day in this region that was frequented by Romans, Moors and Bandits in years gone past. This hike begins by exploring Grazalema’s upper village streets and as we head out of the village we connect to a gently sloping path, leading us up to a lovely viewpoint. From here travellers can return to the hotel for a restful afternoon and wander around the village while others may wish to carry on and explore the verdant natural areas with our tour leader. The rest of the walk involves following a mountainous circuit over an ancient drover’s path where we hope to observe native flora and fauna, the likes of eagles, vultures, mountain goats, cattle, sheep and horses.

Overnight: Puerto de la Villa. Standard room.

Day 12 [12 October 2016]: RONDA (B, D)After breakfast we depart Grazalema for Ronda (literally meaning ‘surrounded by mountains’) by private minibus (1 hr), where we enjoy a one-night stay in this wonderfully picturesque small town. One of Spain’s oldest towns dating back to the 9th century BC, Ronda impresses with its dramatic location perched on an inland plateau at 744 metres. Lauded by many down the centuries, the most famous of the ‘pueblos blancos’ has attracted travellers drawn by its craggy beauty. With links to the renowned writers such as Alexandre Dumas and Ernest Hemingway, it is an ideal place to gaze out from its elevated position across to the patchwork of fields and floodplains beneath. We have an included a walking tour of the old and new quarter in the morning. There is plenty to see and do in Ronda and afternoon suggestions for your free time include a walk into the picturesque gorge, a walk down a country path surrounding the town, museum visits or simply just enjoying the shopping and ambience that Ronda offers. Day 1 [14 October 2016]: MEKNES (B)In Casablanca we see the impressive Mosque of Hassan II, opened in 1993, and second only in size to the great mosque at Mecca. It can accommodate 25,000 worshippers and is one of the only religious sites open to non-Muslims. Later we drive to Rabat, the elegant capital of Morocco and our first Imperial city. It contains numerous fine Arab monuments, some dating to the Almohad and Merenid dynasties and others that are far older. The earliest known settlement is Sala, occupying an area now known as the Chellah, where we visit the remains of the citadel. We also see the vast minaret of the Hassan Mosque and explore the lovely walled quarter known as the Kasbah des Oudaias. In the late afternoon we continue to Meknes.Included activities:

§ Guided tour of Hassan II mosque § Guided tour of Rabat Medina including visit of Kasbah Chellah and Kasbah des Oudaias

Overnight: Riad D’or. Standard room.

Day 2 [15 October 2016]: FES (B)In Meknes we discover the charming streets of the old medina. We explore the many public buildings and at the House of Orpheus we see several fine mosaic floors still intact. From the northern gate, Bab Berdaine, we walk to the shrine of Moulay Ismail who, in the 17th century, turned Meknes from a provincial town to a spectacular Imperial city. We visit the lovely Bou Inania Medresse (religious school) and after time to explore the old souk we drive to Volubilis. Volubilis was once a provincial Roman capital, a distant outpost of the empire, and as we approach it we can see it prominently sited along the edge of a high plateau. Today it is the most impressive Roman site in Morocco and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. We then drive on to Fes for the night.Included activities:

§ Guided tour of Meknes Old Medina including entrance to Bou Inania Medresse

§ Guided tour of Volubilis including entrance to the siteOvernight: Riad Dar Anebar. Standard room.

Day 3 [16 October 2016]: FES (B, D)Spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco, Fes is vibrant, noisy, fascinating and overwhelming - a visual and pungent assault on the senses. It is made up of three distinct ‘cities’, or quarters. Today we head into the old city, known locally as Fes el Bali, arguably the world’s most fascinating and confounding old city. Medieval Fes was one of the world’s great centers of education and culture: both Islamic and Jewish. Its religious institutions and its libraries are legendary. Its mosques are of great renown. And it was to Fes that many of the Muslims (and Jews) expelled from Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella came in 1492.

We spend the day exploring the old city, visiting the Belghazi Museum, Medresse el Attarine, the tanneries and the splendid Funduk Nejjarine, a beautifully restored 18th century inn. We return to our hotel in the late afternoon. In the evening, enjoy a Pastilla dinner.Included activities:

Day 4 [17 October 2016]: MIDELT (B, D)Leaving Fes we drive south, passing through a variety of spectacular scenery as we make our way towards Midelt. Midelt is a smallish market town, nestled between the Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains, at an elevation of just over 1500 meters. It’s a perfect spot to break the journey to the Sahara, being a great base for some easy walks. Many of the locals are Berber, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. After lunch, we can stretch our legs for a few hours on an easy walk in the nearby hills.

Overnight: Hotel Taddart. Standard room.

Day 5 [18 October 2016]: MERZOUGA (B, D)After breakfast there’s time to haggle for carpets (mainly Kilims), take another refreshing walk, or visit the nearby Franciscan convent where the sisters teach local girls and women weaving, tapestry and embroidery. In due course we reach Merzouga, with the backdrop of the orange-colored Erg Chebbi sand dunes, the small Saharan village of Merzouga feels like the modern world has left it behind, charmingly so.The Erg Chebbi dunes are the most stunning in the country and an experience essential of any visit to Morocco. An erg is a vast sea of shifting wind-swept sand that’s formed into picturesque undulating crests and valleys, and the Erg Chebbi is one of the world’s classic landscapes of towering dunes, up to heights of over 150 metres. Located at the end of the sealed road, this is wonderful frontier town.Included activities:

§ Traditional Moroccan dinner at hotel

Overnight: Riad Mamouche. Standard room.

Day 6 [19 October 2016]: AIT BENHADDOU (B, D)This morning you can enjoy a sunrise camel ride, before we make our way towards Ait Benhaddou. We stop at Skoura Oasis, home of several privately-owned kasbahs, where we visit the splendid Kasbah Ameridhl with its extravagant decorations and mud-brick fortifications. We visit the beautiful Bahia Palace, a splendid mansion built in 1866 for a former slave who had risen to a position of importance in the government of Moulay Hassan. We explore the tranquil inner courtyards, fragrant with orange blossom, and the many salons and chambers that make up this elegant home. We continue to the Marrakech Museum, itself a former palace, which houses a fine collection of Moroccan art and sculpture and we then walk through the streets of the old medina as we make our way back to the Jemaa el Fna.
