Amos 6:1a, 4-7 / r Timothy 6:rr-16 / Luke 16:19-31

My husband and ! have been married more than three years-most of the time,

happily. occasionally a disagreement morphs into an argument, which

sometimes turns into an actual fight. when we eventually apologize and

recommit to each other, my husband often reminds us that when we married

we didn't enter into a contract-we committed to a covenant' ln a contract, the

parties focus on "What's in it for me"; in a covenant, each party actively works

toward the other's good. When we treat our marriage like a contract instead of

a covenant, our relationship suffers'

Today,s ,."idingr from Amos and St. Luke challenge our commitment to our

covenant bond. the lsraelites were in covenant relationship with God, meaning

they had responsibilities to God as well as one another' Unfortunately, the

people in the readings didn't heed the covenant-the rich in Amos'time were

oblivious and complacent; the man in the gospelwas aware of Lazarus, but he

did nothing to help him. We too are covenanted with God and God's children'

We aren,t j|st people who happen to be along for the ride to heaven; as a result

of the covenant, we have responsibilitles to actively care for one another,

especially those in need.

It,s about more than just occasionally handing money to a homeless person' lt's

also about consciously incorporating this active care more deeply into our

lives-into our purchar.r, oW politiial activism, our'career choices, our free

of our covenant bond can't be an afterthought' As in a healthy

itmust be at the heart of our relationship with others and with God'

de ar PAD Rf,

O I jurt got rny nat) driuer's license, anil mry wtfe is pressuring me to

stgn up to be an organ donor. Are organ transplants permitted by

the Cathalic Church?

Yes, under certain conditions. The Catechism of *trCatholic Church affirms that "Organ transplants are inconformity with the moral law if the physical and

psychological dangers and risks to the donor are

proportionate to the good that is sought for therecipient" (2296).

Organ transplants from a dead person to a living personmust fulfill two additional criteria: 1) The donor mustgive free and informed consent prior to death, or thosewho legitimately speak on the donor's behalf must do so

at the time of death; and 2) the donor must be dead

before the tissue can be harvested-in. other words, thedonor must not be declared dead prematurely, nor maythe donor's death be hastened just to use the organs.

The Catechism tdds, "Organ donation after death is a

noble and meritorious act and is to be encouraged as an

expression of generous solidarity. "

The transplantation of organs from a living donor mustfulfill two criteria: 1) the removal of the organ must notseriously impair the donor's health or bodily function;md 2) the donor must make an informed and freedecision recognizing the potential risks involved.
