Amos 6.1, 4-7; Psalm 145; 1 Timothy 6.11-16; Luke 16.19-31 Dishonesty, corruption and deceit are deliberate attempts to take advantage of the poor, in today’s readings the rich are accused of being culpable through neglect and lack of awareness. Amos criticises those whose focus is entirely themselves – their

food, music, drink and perfumes but do not care about others in the kingdom of Israel – doomed for destruction by the armies of Assyria. All we know about the rich man is that he dines magnificently and dresses in splendour. As Lazarus is lying at his gate, we must assume that the rich man knows nothing about him .The rich is ignorant of the poor man who lies but metres away from his feasting.
