Twenty– Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) 29th September 2019
Amos 6.1, 4-7; Psalm 145; 1 Timothy 6.11-16; Luke 16.19-31 Dishonesty, corruption and deceit are deliberate attempts to take advantage of the poor, in today’s readings the rich are accused of being culpable through neglect and lack of awareness. Amos criticises those whose focus is entirely themselves – their
food, music, drink and perfumes but do not care about others in the kingdom of Israel – doomed for destruction by the armies of Assyria. All we know about the rich man is that he dines magnificently and dresses in splendour. As Lazarus is lying at his gate, we must assume that the rich man knows nothing about him .The rich is ignorant of the poor man who lies but metres away from his feasting. The issue here is : it is not enough to simply do no harm, one must also choose to do good, and ignorance is no excuse. That can read like a harsh condemnation, but – as Abraham
observes from paradise – Dives and his brothers have Moses and the prophets – the Hebrew Scriptures. Those Scriptures would certainly point the finger at the rich man and his ways as he ignores the poor man at his gate.
