Reflection of the Gospel:
Where most parable deal with everyday objects and
stock characters like farmers, travelers, or a woman bak-
ing bread, today’s parable, the rich Man and Lazarus, is
distinctive in that it contains two first names. The rich
man could be any person enjoying an extravagant life-
style while others suffer but the poor man is Lazarus and
when he dies is carried to the bosom of Abraham. We’re
not given many details about Lazarus’s life other than
his poverty, his hunger, and his illness (sores). We don’t
know if Lazarus lived an upright life, how he came to his
current state in life, or if he had any friends or family.
But we are given a name. This man, lying at the rich
man’s door, is not just a poor person, a person in need,
he is Lazarus. Perhaps if the rich man had crossed the
chasm of social class that separated him and Lazarus in
their earthly life he wouldn’t have found himself starting
across an even greater chasm in eternity. Who are the
ones in need at your door? Do you know their names?
“Lord Jesus, you are my joy and my treasure. Make me
rich in the things of your heavenly kingdom and give me a
generous heart that I may freely share with others the
spiritual and material treasures you have given to me.”
Reflexión del Evangelio:
Donde la mayoría de las parábolas tratan con objetos coti-
dianos y personajes comunes como granjeros, viajeros o una
mujer horneando pan, la parábola de hoy, el hombre rico y
Lázaro, es distintiva porque contiene dos nombres. El hom-
bre rico podría ser cualquier persona que disfrute de un esti-
lo de vida extravagante mientras que otros sufren, pero el
hombre pobre es Lázaro y cuando muere es llevado al seno
de Abraham. No se nos dan muchos detalles sobre la vida
de Lázaro además de su pobreza, su hambre y su enferme-
dad (llagas). No sabemos si Lázaro vivió una vida recta,
cómo llegó a su estado actual en la vida o si tenía amigos o
familiares. Pero se nos da un nombre. Este hombre, acosta-
do en la puerta del rico, no es solo una persona pobre, una
persona necesitada, es Lázaro. Quizás si el hombre rico hu-
biera cruzado el abismo de la clase social que lo separaba a
él y a Lázaro en su vida terrena, no se habría encontrado
atravesando un abismo aún mayor en la eternidad. ¿Quiénes
son los necesitados en tu puerta? sabes sus nombres?
“Señor Jesús, tú eres mi alegría y mi tesoro. Hazme rico en
las cosas de tu reino celestial y dame un corazón generoso para
que pueda compartir libremente con otros los tesoros
espirituales y materiales que me has dado.”

MINISTRY ASSIGNMENT
Feeding the Hungry;
The ween the rich man and Lazarus who had
nothing but only the hope of getting the crumbs
that fall from the table of the wealthy man.
The rich man who lavishly partied day and
night never thought of the very poor man. He
never had compassion. The sin of the rich man
in the gospel is not that he was rich. Christ does
not care if a person is rich or not. His sin was that he was
insensitive to the pain of the poor man, who by God’s design
was part of him, who had a divine right to be dependent on
him. As an author says, the illusion of self-sufficiency, of
independence, is a dangerously immoral thing. None of us are
independent in anything that matters; we are very much
dependent on one another. That is why God made us, and it is
the way he expects us to live, i.e., to be interdependent,
intertwined, spiritually, emotionally, economically. As the song
goes, “No man is an island, No man stands alone, and we need
one another.” We are called to show compassion and generosity
as we share what we have with the less fortunate. I am glad that
in our parish, some of our brothers and sisters are involved in
the Feed the Hungry program in Lompoc. Through them, our
parish is connected to this program that reaches out to the
people who are poor. We need more volunteers for this
program. You can get in touch with Deacon Mike, Karina
Naughton, and Peter and Mary Stieber. They need help in
helping people.
The parable invites us to reach out. The Lord associates himself
with the poor and the needy. Whatever you did to the least of
my brethren, you did it to me. For I was hungry, and thirsty,
you gave me food and drinks.
DID YOU KNOW? The Archdiocese is participating in an independent compensation
program for victim-survivors of sexual abuse of minors by priests. The
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, along with five other dioceses in
California, will be participating in an independent program to offer
persons who were victims of abuse as minors by diocesan priests,
access to compensation as well as access to counseling services if they
chose. Those harmed many years ago and barred from filing lawsuits
because of civil statutes of limitations will be eligible to make claims
under the Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of
Sexual Abuse of Minors by Priests. The Archdiocese’s participation in
the program is part of a long-standing commitment to supporting and
compensating victims of abuse, the protection of children and the
vulnerable, and the prevention of abuse and misconduct in Catholic
parishes, schools and ministries. Nationally recognized mediators and
private compensation program administrators, Kenneth R. Feinberg
and Camille S. Biros will administer the program.

Alimentando a los hambrientos;
La parábola del hombre rico y Lázaro es una de
las historias populares de la Biblia. Podemos
reflexionar sobre la justicia social y la
desigualdad, ya que obviamente vemos la gran
brecha entre el hombre rico y Lázaro que no
tenía más que la esperanza de obtener las
migajas que caen de la mesa del hombre rico. El
hombre rico que se divirtió generosamente día y noche nunca
pensó en el hombre muy pobre. Nunca tuvo compasión. El
pecado del hombre rico en el evangelio no es que fuera rico. A
Cristo no le importa si una persona es rica o no. Su pecado fue
que era insensible al dolor del pobre hombre, quien por diseño
de Dios era parte de él, quien tenía el derecho divino de
depender de él. Como dice un autor, la ilusión de la
autosuficiencia, de la independencia, es algo peligrosamente
inmoral. Ninguno de nosotros es independiente en nada que
importe; Dependemos mucho el uno del otro. Es por eso que
Dios nos hizo, y es la forma en que espera que vivamos, es
decir, que seamos interdependientes, entrelazados, espiritual,
emocional y económicamente. Como dice la canción, "Ningún
hombre es una isla, ningún hombre está solo y nos necesitamos
unos a otros". Estamos llamados a mostrar compasión y
generosidad al compartir lo que tenemos con los menos
afortunados. Me alegra que en nuestra parroquia, algunos de
nuestros hermanos y hermanas estén involucrados en el
programa “Feed the Hungry” de Lompoc. A través de ellos,
nuestra parroquia está conectada a este programa que se
extiende a las personas pobres. Necesitamos más voluntarios
para este programa. Puede ponerse en contacto con el diácono
Mike, Karina Naughton y Peter y Mary Stieber. Necesitan
ayuda para ayudar a las personas. La parábola nos invita a
extender la mano. El Señor se asocia con los pobres y los
necesitados. Lo que sea que le hiciste al menor de mis
hermanos, me lo hiciste a mí. Porque tenía hambre y sed, me
diste comida y bebidas.
¿SABÍA USTED? La Arquidiócesis participa en un programa de compensación
independiente para víctimas-sobrevivientes de abuso sexual de
menores por parte de sacerdotes. La Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles,
junto con otras cinco diócesis en California, participará en un
programa independiente que ofrece acceso a compensación y
servicios de consejería, si así lo desean, a las personas que fueron
víctimas de abuso cuando eran menores por parte de sacerdotes
diocesanos. Aquellos que fueron afectados hace muchos años y
excluidos de presentar demandas, debido a los estatutos de
limitaciones civiles, serán elegibles para presentar reclamos bajo el
Programa de Compensación Independiente para Víctimas-
Sobrevivientes de Abuso Sexual de Menores por Sacerdotes. La
participación de la Arquidiócesis en el programa es parte de un
compromiso de largo plazo para apoyar y compensar a las víctimas
de abuso, proteger a los niños y a las personas vulnerables, y para
prevenir el abuso y la conducta inapropiada en las parroquias,
escuelas y ministerios católicos. Los nacionalmente reconocidos
mediadores y administradores privados de compensación, Kenneth
R. Feinberg y Camille S. Biros administrarán este programa.
