We never forget people who create an impression on us. In the Gospel of today we have the story of two sons and it tells us that first impression is not enough in the kingdom of God. The first son was able to make first impression responding Yesto the father, but he didnt carry out the will of his father in his action. Whereas the second son even though he responded Noto the father and didnt make first impression in his response, he was able to carry out the will of his father. The first son in the gospel of today represents the institutional religion. Followers of this type of religion can pay lip-service to the God who is mystery, and try to compartmentalise Jesus into their own structures. The second son stands for the outsiderswho may be accustomed to saying Noto God, or failed to follow Him closer, but respond to their inner thirst, and in due course they begin a deep search for God. The second reading, from Philippians, speaks of a more specific and positive change of mind to accept and do the will of God as Jesus did: in your minds, you must be the same as Christ Jesus’; this is the direction in which we must constantly focus our minds day by day in doing Gods will. What I find more meaningful but challenging in my own Christian life is to put on the mind of Christ Jesus(Phil 2:5). I think being a Christian is taking on the consciousness of Christ. I know, personally I am far from it. I must acknowledge that in many aspects of my life I am like St Augustine, I say, Yes Lord, but not yet! However, despite this challenge, I do not want to reduce my Christian life to a clear set of criteria in terms of fulfilling rituals and obeying moral norms. But, the call of the Lord to all of us, saint or sinner, is one question. Are we doing the will of the Father all the time? The point is that we need to be courageous to walk the road less travelled. On the other hand, our Christian life becomes meaningful if we open up ourselves to God on a daily basis, and keep searching. That is why we pray with the Psalmist today (25: 4 - 5): Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me your paths. Make me walk in your truth, and teach me: for you are God my Saviour.

A REFLECTION from Fr Joseph & Fr Jim

We all are familiar with the popular saying “First Impression is the best impression.” In our social interactions, we have you come across individuals who make a very good first impression on us, and after a few minutes of conversation with you, they address you by your first name; they talk as if you have known each other for years; and they look at you as if you are the only one who matters to them. We never forget people who create an impression on us. In the Gospel of today we have the story of two sons and it tells us that first impression is not enough in the kingdom of God. The first son was able to make first impression responding ’Yes’ to the father, but he didn’t carry out the will of his father in his action. Whereas the second son even though he responded ’No’ to the father and didn’t make first impression in his response, he was able to carry out the will of his father. The first son in the gospel of today represents the institutional religion. Followers of this type of religion can pay lip-service to the God who is mystery, and try to compartmentalise Jesus into their own structures. The second son stands for the “outsiders” who may be accustomed to saying ‘No’ to God, or failed to follow Him closer, but respond to their inner thirst, and in due course they begin a deep search for God. As it is the important SEASON OF CREATION, the Geelong Sustainability Group thought it might be useful to offer some local information to our parish about how people might actively respond to the 'ecological conversion' challenge in Laudato Si. Often we want to engage with environmental activities but are not sure where or how to do this. Saturday October 10 - Sunday October 11 is Sustainable House Day 2020 Online and open to all! This event is a great way to learn from locals who have made improvements to maximise their energy efficien-cy, reduce their bills and carbon footprint! More information can be found at https://www.geelongsustainability.org.au/shd2020/ And watch online, the excellent ABC Fight for Planet A: Our Climate Challenge - a 3 part series - and learn about how we can all make a difference!

The 10 Things You Can Do About The Climate Crisis After our disastrous summer of unprecedented droughts, catastrophic bushfires, heart-breaking wildlife losses and devastated communities, Australia no longer feels like the ‘lucky country’. Around the world, people looked at Australia as proof positive of the link between climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the most vulnerable nations in the world to climate change, it is in our best interests to act immediately. Pope Francis, in his ground breaking encyclical Laudato Si, calls us to ACTION. We need to be part of what he called an “ecological conversion”.

1. Unite for bold climate action - join others to make a difference Geelong Sustainability Group - https://www.geelongsustainability.org.au/ Transition Streets Geelong - https://www.transitionstreetsgeelong.org. Australian Conservation Foundation - https://www.acf.org.au Environment Victoria - https://www.environmentvictoria.org.au 2. Use energy wisely and save money too! Get a home energy audit to identify where you can make the most energy-saving gains www.victorianenergysaver.vic.gov.au/save-energy-and-money Turn off TVs and other electronics when you are not using them and change to LED lights and save money. 3. Get charged up with renewables Geelong Sustainability will be offering a Solar PV/battery bulk buy option in 2021 or ask a friend for a solar installer recommendation. The global push for cleaner, healthier energy is on. With costs dropping every day, renewable energy is the best choice for the environment and the economy. The highest source of carbon emissions in Geelong is electricity. 4. Eat for a climate-stable planet Eat more meat-free meals, buy local food without packaging. Don’t waste food, compost, grow your own 5. Start a climate conversation Solving climate change requires us all to work together. We can’t do that without finding common ground with those who may not share our perspective. Since people often trust peers, family members and loved ones, you can talk to people about climate change in ways others can’t. You are more likely to open people’s minds when you listen to them and share your own journey. 6. Green your commute Take public transport, ride a bike, car-share. Switch to an electric or hybrid vehicle. Fly less (if you do fly, make sure you offset your emissions) 7. Consume less, waste less, enjoy life more Focusing on life’s simple pleasures - spending time in nature, with loved ones, making a difference to others, provides more purpose, belonging and happiness than buying and consuming. Sharing, making, fixing, upcycling, repurposing and composting are all good places to start. Make fashion circular, visit an op shop first. 8. Invest in renewables and divest from fossil fuels Is your bank or super money being invested in fossil fuels? Check at www.marketforces.org.au - use your money as a force for good. 9. Support or join youth-led movements Young people need our support for their climate action, join one of their campaigns AYCC Australian Youth Climate Coalition would love your support - https://www.aycc.org.au 10. Get politically active and vote Vote for leaders at all levels of government who take climate change seriously. They should commit to setting science-based targets to reduce harmful carbon emissions, implementing clear plans to reach those targets, adapting to climate change and shifting to a clean-energy economy.

In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket.

PARISH PANTRY OPEN TIMES Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays

SEASON OF CREATION by Nick Brodie

In today’s parable where a son said yes but did nothing, Jesus offers a striking indictment of empty lip-service. In our age, one of the Church’s most insistent calls has been for people to work for the protection of the vineyard of the earth. Speaking of climate change, deforestation and chemical pollution, Pope Saint John Paul II declared in 1990 “that the ecological crisis is a moral issue” and called on all people to “recognize their obligation to contribute to the restoration of a healthy environment.” In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI insisted that “technologically advanced societies can and must lower their domestic energy consumption”. In 2015 Pope Francis called on all of humanity “to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming” of the world’s climate which we are currently facing. Successive Popes have therefore called us all to work for the protection of our planet and its people. But it is up to every Christian to ensure that these words are not just empty rhetoric.
