Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

After several weeks of trips and wonderful events here at St. Joe, it is now time to move forward with school. I am excited at the prospect of our kids being together again. They need it.

As you know, we’ve done lots of trips and events for the youth in July. All has gone well and everyone has stayed healthy, happy, and holy! Praise the Lord.

We will soon be resuming many different meetings in-person. St. Vincent has been doing the same. We proceed prudently, of course, in all things.

To all of our folks who are still unable to join us for Mass: WE MISS YOU AND WE LOVE YOU. I can-not wait until we can all be together again. It just isn’t the same without the whole parish family here.

Have a great week!

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

St. Joseph News Rest in Peace

Parishioner Florence McCall, age 101, passed away on Monday, June 13th. Fr. Mike officiated at her funeral on Friday, June 17th.

She was buried at St. Joe Cemetery. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Brute Days

Fr. Mike teaches the teenage boys at Brute Days about Fr. Vincent Bacquelin, the first pastor at St. Vincent. Fifty-five boys attended. More photos coming soon.

REP Registration

It is time to register your son or daughter for the Religious Education Program for the 2020-2021 school year. REP will start in September 2020.

If your child is unable to attend St. Joseph School, then he or she should definitely be enrolled in REP!

REP is for all children who do not attend St. Joseph School, preschool through eighth grade.

Freshmen in high school attend Confirmation prep at a different time.

The fee to cover textbooks and other expenses is $50 for each child, regardless of program (e.g., Con-firmation, Sunday Religious Ed, RCIC, etc.) up to a maximum of $150 per family.

Please remember that it is our DUTY as Christian parents, godparents, and grandparents, to make sure that our children are being brought up in the Catholic faith! It is a sad thing to see the faith “die out” in one’s family.

Sign up now at: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

For more information, go to: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

Please contact Fr. Mike or Billy should you have any questions. RCIA to Resume in September

RCIA will resume on September 21st. We are cur-rently accepting registrations. Now is the time to plant the seed with some loved ones!! Applications are available at the St. Joe office.

After the run, we will have hot dogs and other treats!! There is also the option to take part virtually, which would get you a shirt but allow you to run at a place and time of your choosing.

Please signup online now!! You can sign all family members up at once using the link here. There's a link on this form to pay online too using our secure donation portal. Sign up here: https://www.stjoeshelby.org/summer-signups/

Please sign up sooner rather than later so we know how much scholarship money we can promise to fami-lies who are in need.

The St Vincent and St Joseph Joint Parish Picnic Committee is planning to proceed with the Annual Joint Parish Picnic on Wednesday, August 19th at 6:00pm at the Blue River Park Shelter, with some modifications to help protect from COVID-19.

Instead of having a buffet style gathering, we are proposing an old fashion picnic basket event. Bring your family and food prepared for your family only. We will have tables set up in the Blue River Shelter, appropriately distanced and there is plenty of space on the grassy area to have a blanket, if you choose.

It is recommended to wear a mask at the event when socializing with others. News for St. Joseph

St. Joe Bus Rule

Bus guidelines from the State Health Commissioner mandate assigned seats and masks on buses during these times. We are following this rule on ALL trips.

Some Wisdom from CS Lewis That Might Help Navigate COVID Times

In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempt-ed to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our present situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sen-tenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways…..It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep thinking about bombs.

A Prayer for the Police

Oh Almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe:

Watch over all police and law enforcement officers.

Father in Heaven, please give them the strength,

courage and perseverance to endure the unjust condemnation, danger, and physical

abuse to which they are at times subjected.

We recommend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous but necessary.

Thank you for calling them to serve us and maintain order and peace.

Dear God, grant these brave men and women

your almighty protection, Unite them safely with their families

after duty has ended.

Confirmation Mass—Sept. 30

Mark your calendars! The youth of St. Joe who have been preparing for Confirmation will be confirmed by the Archbishop at the Cathedral in Indianapolis on September 30th at 7:00pm. More details to come.

News for Both Parishes Fr. Mike’s Bookshelf

This week I would like to recommend to you a lovely book by Fr. Jacques Phillippe called Searching for and Maintaining Peace.

This book is AWESOME! It is a small work that talks about how to achieve peace of heart.

Many folks are unsettled these days, filled with anxieties, worries, and concerns. This is a common human experience, of course, but I would say the present COVID situation has exacerbated things.

We need peace! If the surface of the lake is peaceful and tranquil, it will reflect the sun. In just the same way, the more a soul is at peace, the better it will reflect God.

Part I of this book talks about how interior peace is the “road to saintliness.” Part II talks about how we might react to situations and people who might cause us to lose our peace. Part III has some wisdom from the saints about peace.

Friends, it is so important to live peacefully. Saint Seraphim of Sarov said, “Acquire interior peace and a multitude will find its salvation through you.” If we don’t find peace in Jesus, we wil always be exhaust-ed and we will simply transmit our own restlessness and distresses with those around us. That isn’t good for them -- or us! I can’t recommend this book enough. It has done wonders for my own soul. St. Joseph Parking Lot

Please do not park in front of the trash and recycle dumpsters/bins during the week..Monday thru Friday. They are located behind St. Joseph Church on the left side near the cafeteria door.

Photos in the Bulletin!

We are making an effort to put more pictures into the bulletin! After all, a picture is worth a thousand words!

A few notes:

1) Photos look WAY better on the online version of the bulletin. They are in color there. 2) Please email photos to [email protected].

3) Next week, we will feature pictures from VBS!

Prayer Before & After Mass

Remember that it is a beautiful practice to pray before Mass and after Mass. We can tend to come in at the last moment, or sometimes even late, and leave as soon as we can. Best to offer a pious, heartfelt prayer before Mass asking Jesus to touch and transform your life. Offer another such prayer at the end of Mass, thanking God for the Eucharist.

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

In trying to explain some of the deeper secrets of life, Jesus gives us this parable in this weekend’s Gospel: the kingdom of God is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he finds a single one of great value, he goes and sells all that he owns and buys that pearl.

For what are you willing to renounce other things? Almost every choice we make means that we give up something else. If I fall in love and marry someone, that means that I don’t develop the same kind of rela-tionship with anyone else. When I decided to make the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to live as a Sister of St. Francis for the rest of my life, that meant that I would not ever have a family of my own. It was a choice. In our everyday life we have to make choices between things or activities. If I choose to spend my time doing one thing, then I can’t spend the same time doing something else. I think Jesus is asking us to be aware of why we do the things we do. What is the pearl of great price in our lives?

This week as we take time to pray, we can ask our-selves these questions. Who is most important in my life? For whom do I make sacrifices? On what do I spend my money? On what do I spend most of my time? The answers to these questions will tell you what or who is really the Pearl of Great Price in your life. Talk with Jesus about this.

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statute. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

First Reading — Solomon asks for an understanding heart (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12). Psalm — “Lord , I love your commands.” (Psalm 119) Second Reading — God predestined us to be con-formed to the image of the Son (Romans 8:28-30). Gospel — “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treas-ured buried in a field.” (Matthew 13:44-52)

Keep Your Rosary in Your Pocket

Pray to our Blessed Virgin Mary! We celebrate her intercessory power, especially as it happens through the Rosary. Please make an effort to keep a rosary in your pocket all the time.

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

Emancipation did not bring economic freedom to former slaves. Vagrancy laws allowed police to sweep up black men and then rent them out as convict labor. Following the Civil War, convict leas-ing programs shifted the Southern prison populations to predominantly black.
