FROM FR. Bill
“Christ is in me---I am enough” -Helen Moroulis
Last week’s readings challenged us so profoundly to be humble people. As we look for role models in that virtue we would all do well to look to USA Olympic wrestler, Helen Moroulis, age 24, from southern California.
In 2012 Ms. Moroulis narrowly missed qualifying for the London Summer Games. She was asked by the coaches to make the trip to London to help the women who beat her make final preparations for their Olympic matches. She humbly accepted the invitation and spent the week doing whatever was needed for hours on end simulating wrestling moves to assist the American team. She said making that trip was one of the hardest things she had ever done, being so close to her dream but not attaining it, and having to be so close to and subservient to those who were living it out.
Flash forward to Rio 2016 and Ms. Maroulis makes the team and is considered a serious medal contender. The road to gold led through the best wrestler in the world, Saori Yashida of Japan, three-time gold medal winner and thirteen-time world champion, a full ten years older than Ms. Maroulis. Helen studied hours of film watching Ms. Yashida’s every move. A deeply committed Christian, Ms. Maroulis was given an insight by God that Ms. Yashida, and all her competitors, were not her enemy. They were women who wanted the same thing and were making the same sacrifices. Throughout the months leading to the games Helen was conflicted with the feeling that she was not perfect. As she prepared to enter the mat for the gold-medal match against the Japanese champion, she was given an insight by God, that though not perfect: “Christ is in me---I am enough.” This was the prophetic word God gave to her as a prayer. She walked onto the mat and minutes later into US Olympic history, winning the first USA gold medal in women’s wrestling. It was only the third time Ms. Yashira had lost in almost two decades of wrestling.
Shortly after the victory Helen was interviewed about her victory, she heaped praise upon her opponent, noting that she had looked up to her since her teen years, noted the sacrifice, courage and commitment it took for her to come back for a forth Olympics, and beautifully and simply noted “it was an honor for me to wrestle her.” With that simple sentence she didn’t even note that she BEAT her. No intimidating stare downs, no trash talk, and no chest thumping, instead a woman of dignity, virtue and class. “whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 14).
Later after the US flag was raised and the anthem played in her honor she was asked about her feelings at that moment. Again with humility, she noted all that the flag represents, its history, and the countless momentous occasions for which it has been raised. She said in light of that she felt very small that it was being raised for her accomplishment. She thought of soldiers far from home and in dangerous places and remembered their sacrifices. It seems she had already won the gold medal for humility before a match was fought, and a gold had been won by her parents, church, and schools for making her into the woman she is. “Christ is in me----I am enough.” It would have been just as true if Ms. Yashira had wiped the floor with her. She was already a winner in what counts most.
Thanks for allowing me the summer off from writing, Fr Bill Lohan Pastor
