9 June 2011, Cambridge Union, Cambridge UK

The future success of our nations’ economies depends critically on their ability to generate and harvest ideas that create value in the society we live in. Ideas Economy is that which we live in today, an economy capitalising around the most fundamental resource of all – people. The ability to engage the brightest minds and connect them altogether is crucial in overcoming the biggest challenges facing our nations. Invention and innovation are no longer driven by the small but exceptional few. They are the product of extensive collaboration and synergy of increasingly diverse expertise crossing company and nation borders. Cambridge high-tech inventions are world renowned and constantly shaping the global society. However open innovation has increased with the ease of the internet allowing for increased communication and connectivity between industries and companies. Open innovation and the internet are two examples of how 'Ideas without borders' can be implemented. How do high-technologies and clusters fit in with this trend? TVC2011 will address the importance of Ideas Economy, specifically the process of implementing this as well as examine the effect in high tech clusters including Cambridge. It will provide delegates the opportunity to understand the concept, its benefits and applicable scenarios through direct engagement, connectivity of ideas, and problem solving at a networking level. Finally, TVC 2011 will aim to provide delegates a platform to create new ideas, form new business relationships and most importantly - catalyse inspiration. The topics addressed in the conference will be of high interest for investors, professionals, and entrepreneurial-minded students who are interested in exploring investment opportunities generated behind the concept of Ideas Economy, and the benefits of implementing this to increase existing and future ventures.

Company Exhibition In addition to the main conference, we are hosting an exhibition comprising of start-up companies in the UK (Technology Showcase) and well-established Cambridge based companies (Cambridge Diamond exhibition): The Technology Showcase is an opportunity for young local and national companies to gain publicity and interest from investors. We will also be hosting a competition to identify the most promising tech start-ups. The Cambridge Diamond exhibition is organised to inspire national and international conference attendees by presenting the best well-established Cambridge region companies.

Proposed format

This one day conference will be structured to model the process of innovation portrayed in four sections.

In the first part of the conference, keynote speakers will define Ideas Economy and discuss how specifically how to use this platform to engage creative minds in solving business challenges through collaboration.

Second part of the conference will consider the challenges of connecting people and ideas generated by primarily addressing ‘How can we be more innovative in groups rather than acting as individual experts?’

In the third part, delegates will be invited to break up into several brainstorming workshops to personally experience solving current roadblocks moderated by experts directly involved or implicated in these challenges. The resulting discussion will crucially be driven by delegates themselves.

The conference will end with a high profile keynote speech and TVC Showcase winner awards inspiring the current as well as future entrepreneurs and investors.

Workshops Under Consideration

Healthcare

Improving healthcare on a global scale requires technological innovation that can deliver cheaper, more remote and more sophisticated treatment. Innovative business models also promise to make existing medical technology more affordable than ever.

CleanTech

Sustainability is now essential in all areas of human advancement. This workshop will invite delegates to solve problems where new technologies are essential to bringing existing and emerging processes towards an environmentally sustainable level.

Open Innovation

Technology development is becoming increasingly less in-house as more firms seek to source ideas globally rather than internally. How do we get the best from an entire globe of ideas? Delegates are challenged with creating more ideal models of open innovation.

Keynote Discussion Points

How can we engage mass idea generation through open innovation?

What are the key risks for firms engaging in open innovation?

What is the scope for open innovation? How is it limited?

How does IP work in an open innovation model?

How do open standards improve technology design?

How can small firms and start-ups benefit from the ideas economy?

How do we engage end-users in improving technology?

How does Cambridge contribute?

Opening up resources: How can firms benefit from resource sharing?
