Who We AreThe Fred Hollows Foundation NZ works in the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste, where 4 out of 5 people who are blind don’t need to be; their condition is treatable or preventable. We carry on the work of legendary Kiwi eye doctor, Professor Fred Hollows(1929-1993). !Fred was an internationally acclaimed eye surgeon and social justice activist who championed the right of all people to high quality, affordable eye care. His vision was a world where no one is needlessly blind.

!Our Goal Our mission is to restore sight to the needlessly blind by providing sight-saving surgeries and treatments, and by training local eye health specialists to deliver eye care services in their own communities. !! 2

!!No matter what distance you’re doing, whether running or walking, we invite you to raise funds for The Foundation as you prepare for the event. !Talk to your friends, family and colleagues and let them know that you’re running/walking to end avoidable blindness. Your participation will help people see again. !Your supporters can donate to you through a number of channels but the easiest is Givealitte which we explain on the next page. !As you train for the event, we invite you to think about all the people who will be helped by your efforts. Running is something that blind people in the Pacific could never even consider. But with your support $25 can change their lives and give them back their independence. !We hope the work of The Foundation inspires you as it’s inspired millions of others around the world. !!

!To ensure you reach your fundraising targets, here are a few helpful hints: !

• The first donation sets the scene. Consider making the first donation yourself, or ask someone you know to make a generous gift.

• It’s all about who you know! The more people you ask, the more donations you’ll receive. Email your contacts, post on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, ring and text your family and don’t forget to ask them in person. You could even ask them to share your page with their own networks.

• Update your supporters with your progress. Givealittle has an activity page where you can add pictures, videos and journal entries, or you could use email, Facebook or a blog.

• Don’t forget to say thanks. Thanking your donors on social network sites is not only a great way to show your gratitude, it also reminds others to donate!

• If you have a website or blog, add a donation widget to your page. You can find instructions here. !

An image of Fred after a fun run back in the 1970’s.

Fred Hollows was an avid runner.

“When we were about eight kilometres out of Enngonia, Fred asked the driver to pull the car over and said that he and I were going to run into town. It was a pitch black night, with no moon. The car sped off and Fred and I were running along in the dark.

When Fred ran he had this dreadful, wheezing, laboured breathing. I was sure that my professor was going to die of a heart attack at any moment and that I, the poor medical student, would be unable to resuscitate him and would suffer great disgrace as a result of letting my professor die.

However, Fred was a tough old bastard and he could run much better than I could. After about ten minutes the wheezing, rasping pseudo-dying professor disappeared off into the distance leaving me alone out in western New South Wales. At that time I stopped worrying about whether my professor would die of a heart attack or not, and began to worry about my own safety.”
