Forty-four reporters on BCI

Forty-four reporters participating in “Publichealth and medical reporting: A workshop forjournalists in Latin America” visited BCI in afield trip, on Thursday, October 21. TheWorkshop, emphasizing in the state of AIDS,cancer and obesity, environmental and mentalhealth; medical reporting and the relationshipbetween reporters and scientists, was held fromOctober 18-22 in Panama City. The group alsovisited STRI's Medicinal Plant AnalysisLaboratory with research associate ToddCapson, coordinator of STRI's InternationalCollaborative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) andEduardo Ortega, who briefed them on ICBG'sactivities, on Wednesday afternoon. Theworkshop was sponsored by the US NationalInstitutes of Health, including the FogartyInternational Center (one of the sponsors ofSTRI's ICBG) the National Cancer Institute, theNational Institute of Environmental HealthSciences, the Office of AIDS Research, theNational Library of Medicine and the NationalInstitute of Mental Health. The group heldworkshop sessions on the Island, and STRI andICBG personnel briefed them on STRI activitiesand research projects carried out in Panama and BCI, guided them into the forest, and presenteda summary of the collecting strategies for themedicinal plant project on the Island.

Cuarenta y cuatro periodistas participantes de“Salud pública y el reportaje médico: un taller paraperiodistas de América Latina” llegaron a BarroColorado en una visita de campo, el jueves, 21 deoctubre. El taller, enfocado en el estado del sida,el cáncer y la obesidad, salud ambiental y mental;los reportajes médicos y la relación entreperiodistas y científicos, se celebró en la ciudad dePanamá del 18 al 22 de octubre. El grupo tambiénvisitó el Laboratorio de Análisis de PlantasMedicinales de STRI con el investigador asociado,Todd Capson, coordinador de los Grupos deColaboración Internacional para la Biodiversidad(ICBG) y Eduardo Ortega, quienes les hablaronsobre las actividades del ICBG, el miércoles por latarde. Marine environmental authorities meet at TupperWith an introduction by STRI deputy directorEldredge Bermingham on Wednesday morningat the Tupper Center, a three-day internationalseminar (October 20-23) on the Management ofProtected Marine Areas began, with the presenceof distinguished environmental authorities fromCosta Rica, Galapagos, Colombia, Mexico andPanama

Organized by Jon Day, Conservation,Biodiversity and World Heritage director of theGreat Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority(GBRMPA) and STRI research associate ToddCapson, the seminar aimed to gather regionalspecialists and share experiences about protectedmarine areas in these countries.

Day had more than 25 years of professionalexperience with resource management acrossAustralia when he accepted the position withGBRMPA in 1998. The Great Barrier Reef(GBR) is undisputed as one of the world’s mostimportant natural assets. It is the largest naturalfeature on earth stretching more than 2,300kmalong the northeast coast of Australia from thenorthern tip of Queensland to just north ofBundaberg. Day offered presentations on GBRmanagement and other marine protected areas,threats to marine bodiversity, the benefits ofmarine protected areas, their legal frame, andother considerations.

The cases of Coiba National Park in Panama,Isla del Coco National Park in Costa Rica,Gorgona, Old Providence McBean Lagoon andMalpelo national parks and San Andres,Providencia and Santa Catalina Archipelago inColombia, as well the Galapagos National Parkin Ecuador were also presented.

Organizado por Jon Day, director de Conserva-ción, Biodiversidad y Patrimonio Mundial de laAutoridad del Parque Marino del Arrecife de laGran Barrera (GBRMPA) y Todd Capson deSTRI, el seminario tuvo como objetivo reunir aespecialistas regionales para compartir experienciassobre las áreas marinas protegidas en estos países.

Day tenía más de 25 años de experiencia en el ma-nejo de recursos en Australia cuando aceptó suactual posición con GBRMPA en 1998. Los arreci-fes de la Gran Barrera (GBR) son, indiscutiblemen-te, uno de los activos naturales más importantes delmundo. Es la característica natural más extensa dela tierra, con más de 2,300 km a lo largo de la costanoreste de Australia, desde la punta al norte deQueensland hasta el norte de Bundaberg. Dayofreció presentaciones sobre el manejo de GBR yotras áreas marinas protegidas, las amenazas a labiodiversidad marina, los beneficios de las áreasmarinas protegidas, sus marcos legales, y otrosaspectos.

CARICOMP meeting on BocasThe Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity (CARICOMP) Program met on Bocas del Toro fromOct 17-22 with the attendance of 37 participants including STRI's Rachel Collin and HéctorGuzmán. The meeting, organized by STRI, reviewed the information gathered at the CARICOMPsites during the last ten years. CARICOMP is a regional scientific effort to study land-seainteraction process, to monitor for change, and to provide appropriate scientific information formanagement. The Program focuses on understanding the productivity, structure and functions ofthree important coastal ecosystems: mangroves, sea grasses and reefs, throughout the region.Twenty-nine marine laboratories including STRI, parks and reserves, in 13 islands and ninemainland countries have now joined the CARICOMP Program which has a Data ManagementCenter in Kingston, Jamaica. CARICOMP is a project of the UNESCO/COMAR (Coastal Marine)COSALC (Coastal Systems of Latin America and the Caribbean) program.

El Programa de Productividad Marina Costera del Caribe (CARCOMP) se reunió en Bocas delToro del 17 al 22 de octubre con una participación de 37 especialistas incluyendo a Héctor Guzmány Rachel Collin de STRI. La reunión, organizada por STRI, revisó la información recogida en la redde CARICOMP durante los últimos diez años. CARICOMP es un esfuerzo científico internacionalpara estudiar el proceso de interacción entre la tierra y el mar, para observar el cambio y suministrarinformación científica apropiada para el manejo de recursos naturales. El programa está enfocadoen el conocimiento de la productividad, estructura y funciones de tres importantes ecosistemascosteros: manglares, pastos marinos y arrecifes en toda la región. Veintinueve laboratorios marinos,incluyendo a STRI, parques y reservas en 13 islas y nueve países continentales se han unido alPrograma de CARICOMP el cual tiene un Centro de Manejo de Datos en Kingston, Jamaica.CARICOMP es un proyecto de los Sistemas Costero de América Latina y el Caribe deUNESCO/COMAR (Costero-Marino).
