Laurance and Lovejoyreceive BBVA awardOutstanding world leaders intropical biology andconservation, William F.Laurance, STRI, and STRIresearch associate Thomas E.Lovejoy, Biodiversity Chair atthe H. John Heinz III Centerfor Science, Economics andthe Environment, have wonthe 2008 BBVA FoundationFrontiers of KnowledgeAward in Ecology andConservation Biology, announced today, January 30,in Madrid, Spain.
The pair received the awardfor their contributions towardunderstanding theconsequences of habitatfragmentation and the impactsof global change on tropicalforests, and for thedevelopment of fundamentalpolitical strategies to stem thetide of tropical deforestation.
Nearly three decades ago,Lovejoy convinced theBrazilian government tosupport the establishment ofthe Biological Dynamics ofForest Fragments Project(BDFFP) in central Amazonia. Laurance and Lovejoy worktirelessly to promote trainingof Amazonian students andconservationists, thus ensuringongoing conservation effortsin the region. The project hasproduced over 520 technicaland popular publications—many of which were authored
or co-authored by Laurance andLovejoy, 55 doctoraldissertations, and 63 master´stheses.
The Ecology and ConservationBiology Award is one of eightawards granted by the BBVAFoundation each year. The sizeof the cash awards, totaling 3.2million Euro, and the range ofdisciplines in the arts andsciences they represent, placethe BBVA prizes in the samecategory as the Nobel prizes.
Silent invasion of an“eternal” jellyfish: to clarifyOn Tuesday, January 26, TimesOnline, UK, was probably oneof the first to report that an 'immortal' jellyfish that isswarming through the world'soceans, Turritopsis nutricula “isable to revert back to a juvenileform once it mates afterbecoming sexually mature”.This was followed by dozensof similar reports around theworld. This information, rediscovered by some Britishvenues this week, is based onan article by Maria Pia Migliettaand Haris Lessios publishedonline by Biological Invasions onJune 10, 2008. It was reportedby ScienceNews on June 23. See:www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/33516/title/Nearly_immortal_sea_creature_spreadsin
In a message from Maria Pia toSTRI, “It is the story of themedusae (Hydrozoans) of thespecies Turritopsis dorhnii(previously known as Turritopsisnutricula) known to be“immortal” because it is able torevert its life cycle when
stressed instead of facing death, revert to the polyp stage.Miglietta clarified that she didnot discovered this feature inthe species. It was first reportedin 1992 by G. Bavestrello, C.Sommer and M. Sarà in ScientiaMarina.
Using molecular tools, Migliettaand STRI marine biologist HarisLessios found that this speciesis invading the world’s oceans.“The implication of our resultsis twofold: they identify aworldwide marine invader, anddocument a rapid process oflocal morphological response. They also provide insight in thepresence of invasive species thatcan go unnoticed due to theirrapid morphological change in anew geographic area.” Thisattests to a rapid phenotipicresponse that makes this grandscale invasion a silent one.
“Small but pervasive, this jellyfish-like
hydrozoan takes several forms. It can
survive tough times by collapsing into
a blob and then growing back into its
youthful, stalk-like form. No wonder
genetic testing is finding that it has
quickly and stealthily spread through-
out the oceans.” ScienceNews.

Pequeña pero peligrosa, esta hidrozoa
tipo aguamala adquiere diferentes
formas.
estrella. No es sorpresa que las
pruebas genéticas demuestren que
está rápida y continuamente
invadiendo los océanos.

For several years, Keddell andcolleagues have been usinginformation from the STRI website, biennial reports andSTRInews column “Science inProgress” to design a scienceeducation project with childrenfrom four to 16 years old in theDC area. With Lidia de Valenciafrom the public program atCulebra and Bocas del Toro, the group visited researchersRichard Cooke, Mark Torchin,Carlos Jaramillo, Bill Wcislo,Allen Herre, Sunshine VanBael, Stanley Heckadon-Moreno, John Christy and BertLeigh, to learn more aboutresearch projects at STRI. Theyhope to apply these stories totheir simulations in the
classroom.
This past summer in someschools in Washington DC, ayounger group of “RachelCollin and colleagues” wereexamining the “glorious mud”brought up by Collin from thePacific ocean floor to look forthe different marine species thatlive in this peculiar habitat, aspart of a science coursesimulating real scientists doingreal science.

Víctor Quintana (1966-2009)Executive Protection specialistVíctor Quintana, 43, passedaway on Saturday, January 24,after a long struggle with bonecancer. He is survived by wifeMiroslava Quintana anddaughter Alba, father, motherand siblings.
“Víctor Quintana beganworking for STRI in 1998. Hewas a most agreeable colleague, dedicated to the goals of theInstitution and a loyalspokesperson for STRI with themany visitors from all nationsthat he was assigned to escortthrough the mysteries of STRI’sfacilities, Panama’s airports,Ministries and traffic. We spenthours together discussing thepolitics of both the UnitedStates and Panama while waitingin traffic or outside the office ofa President, Ambassador,Minister, or waiting for thearrival of STRI guests at theTocumen Airport.
Many of the thank you lettersthe Drector’s Office receivedfrom our visitors specificallycomplimented Victor for hiscourtesy, unflappable demeanorand knowledge of the history ofPanama that could answer thequestions a bewildered first timevisitor was likely to ask. Hemade them feel welcome and hecould do so fluently in twolanguages.
Few people were aware thatVictor traveled abroad toparticipate in special trainingregarding the issues ofmaintaining the security of thesevisitors.
He was always cheerful inemergencies some of whichrequired him to work longhours, often on very shortnotice. Victor was an island ofcalm and tranquility in a sea ofturmoil. Returning from ahectic trip to Washington and
being welcomed at theairport by Victor, smilingand prepared to discusssome poetry or literaturehe was reading, wasalways something to lookforward to after thetravails of Washington’sbureaucracy and modernair travel.
He was taken much tooearly and all hiscolleagues will mournhim.”
