With the support of outsideallies BSP and SP and absence ofJD(U) members, Governmenttoday managed to have its way inthe JPC on 2G scam when thepanel approved the draft reportgiving clean chit to PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh andFinance Minister P Chidambaramwith a 16-11 vote in its favour.

Eleven opposition members,including BJP's 5 and one eachof BJD, TMC, CPI, CPI(M),AIADMK and DMK votedagainst the Joint ParliamentaryCommittee report that accusedformer Telecom Minister A Rajaof "misleading" the PrimeMinister and "belying" the

assurances given to him.Of the total 30 members in

the committee, three members,including Gopinath Munde fromBJP, and Sharad Yadav andRamchandra Prasad Singh -both JD (U) - were absent.

Out of the 27 present, theruling side got the votes ofCongress (11), NCP (one), BSP(2), SP (1) and Nominated mem-ber from Rajya Sabha AshokGanguly. Panel chief P CChacko also voted as a Congressmember.

NCP member Y P Trivediwas not present in the commit-tee room when votes were beingcast. He later gave Chacko awritten statement supporting thedraft report.

Those who pressed for morediscussions included DMK's TR Baalu, CPI's GurudasDasgupta and Sinha.(PTI)

13 killed in building collapse, 29 injured

MUMBAI, Sept 27:

Thirteen persons, including three of a family, were killed and29 injured when a five-storey residential building belonging to theBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mazgaon areahere collapsed today.

“The death toll in the collapse has risen to 13,” a civic officialtold reporters, adding many more were believed to be trappedunder the debris.

Four of the deceased have been identified as Lakhoji DevjiChawda (60), Jamuna Chawda (30) Anil Chawda (19) and Santosh(44).

The injured have been admitted to the state-run JJ Hospital andNair Hospital.

Around 21 families, which were BMC’s tenants, lived in the30-year-old structure.

It was categorised as a C-2 building, which meant that it was inneed of urgent repairs.

The kin of the missing wailed as a heavy machinery lifted largeslabs of concrete and rescue workers looked for the dead or sur-vivors under the rubbles of the building.

The building is located on Brahmadev Khot Marg near BabuGenu market in the Mazgaon area, which is close to the DockyardRoad railway station on the harbour railway line.

Anish Kadam (10), Diptesh Kadam (16), Habib Shaikh (22),Tauqeer Shaikh (22), Haroon Shaikh (24) and Ajay Chendvankar(40) were among those rescued.(PTI)
