Last Fall I went with my tennis team to Northern California district playoffs in Carmel Valley. Matches took place at the lovely resorts of Carmel Valley Ranch and Pebble Beach. The Inn at Spanish Bay offered us courts for practice.

Carmel Valley has the best weather in the Monterey/Carmel area. In the past, many resorts promised a refund if you did not see the sun.

We stayed again at the Carmel Mission Inn (I was on another winning team last year), perfectly situated right off Route 1 and Rio Road, with easy access to both Carmel Valley, Carmel and Pebble Beach and walking distance to the Carmel Mission. The two shopping centers on either side of the hotel made for easy walking to two restaurants I revisited. I hoped to tell you about the restaurant we all (12 teammates) loved, however it has since closed. It was the Volcano Grill. The owner Billy Quon Lee is a legend in the area. He has started and sold several other restaurants. Two of them, The Rio Grill and Bahama Billy’s are in the nearby shopping centers. Not sure why the Volcano Grill closed but I would guess it was the economy and it’s location on the other end of Carmel Valley Road. We were there on Halloween and the service and the staff exceeded expectations. One of my teammates left her cell phone. When I called later that evening, Billy who always seemed to answer the phone, personally delivered it to our hotel! Did I mention it was on the other end of the Valley? I look forward to his next restaurant venture, but looks like for now he is working on a website for the Monterey area.

Another favorite is Café Rustica, wonderful food, atmosphere and service. This is in Carmel Valley Village, or just "the Village" to locals.

After practice at the Inn at Spanish Bay, we lunched at Sticks, their 19th

hole spot, great for ocean vistas.

All this dining is cause for more exercise. If you are not a tennis player or golfer, there are great hiking opportunities nearby. Point Lobos is not to be missed and for a really good workout, hike Soberanes Canyon Trials to the top for amazing ocean views in the Garrapata State Park. Want less of a workout? The Garland Regional Park has flatter walks and the wildflowers should be in bloom this time of year. And afterwards, how about wine tasting at one of the tasting rooms that dot "the Village”.If you do venture into Carmel by The Sea, my favorite restaurants are family owned Cassanova and La Bicyclette. The food and ambiance are so European.

Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Planetarium

With many attractions like The Tech Museum and The Winchester Mystery House to visit around the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, some visitors need to keep a written list of fun things to do on return vacation trips.

One lesser known, yet impressive museum, is this Egyptian attraction located in San Jose, CA, forty-five minutes south of San Francisco, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum.

The definition of Rosicrucian from the online Merriam-Webster dictionary is, “adherent of a 17th and 18th century movement professing esoteric (special, rare, or unusual interest) and occult (to shut off from view or exposure) wisdom with emphasis on mysticism and spiritual enlightenment.”

This is an extraordinary museum and one does not have to be an Egyptian enthusiast to appreciate it.

The ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife. Because of this belief, they preserved people's possessions and bodies after death, for use in the afterlife. A favorite lesson at the Rosicrucian Museum is learning about mummies. There are four real human mummies on display.

Intel Museum Tourist Attraction… Computer Place in Silicon Valley is Kid Friendly Top Place to Visit

A family fun place to visit in Silicon Valley is the Intel Museum, in Santa ClaraCA, with interactive exhibits enhanced with audio devices, human docents available to answer questions and a gift shop to buy Intel memorabilia.

The Intel Museum located on the main campus of Intel Corporation at 2200 Mission College Blvd, Santa Clara, California, is a must-see for visitors of all ages. This museum is free and open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Intel Corporation, a semiconductor company or integrated chip maker, is an icon of Silicon Valley and the building may be viewed by passing traffic on Highway 101 in the San Francisco bay area. The term “Silicon Valley” was actually nicknamed by a magazine writer because of all of the semiconductor companies which were started in the 1960’s and used silicon as the main ingredient to make chips.

Tips to Explore this Family Friendly Museum Attraction

A tip for individual families as they explore the Intel Museum is to pick up one of the audio devices at the main desk as they enter. These devices are available in the following languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French, and Spanish.

Three new interactive exhibits at the Intel Museum, Digital Rain, Arti the Robot, and Get Digitized, should be on everyone’s list of things to do at this museum.

SMUIN BALLET presents

JIRÍ KYLIÁN’S “PETITE MORT,”MA CONG’S “FRENCH TWIST,” AND

MICHAEL SMUIN’S “SONGS OF MAHLER

May 29-30, 2010

CUPERTINO – FLINT CENTER

Smuin Ballet concludes its 2009/2010 season with an invigorating spring program consisting of three enthralling, high-energy ballets—visual stunner Petite Mort, passionate Songs of Mahler, and the striking French Twist. European choreographer Jirí Kylián’s breathtaking Petite Mort, which pairs six men and six women with six fencing foils, set to two of Mozart’s most beautiful piano concertos, marks a significant collaboration for Smuin Ballet. Petite Mortencompasses Kylian’s trademark grace and inventiveness in a roundelay in which aggression, sexuality, vulnerability, tenderness, and harmony all play a part. Smuin Ballet will be the first Bay Area company to perform this jewel by Kylián, one of the most inventive and daring choreographers at work today and for many years the driving force behind Nederlands Dans Theater. Continuing the program is Michael Smuin’s Songs of Mahler, a vivid ballet that flows through a range of emotions from playful to dramatic and passionate. Rounding out what will be a remarkable program is rising star choreographer Ma Cong’s fast and flirtatious piece French Twistset to five musical selections by French composer Hugues Le Bars. Currently a principal dancer at Tulsa Ballet, Cong was named one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch” in 2006 and created French Twist at the National Choreographers Initiative in the summer of 2008.

Introducing Leslie Butlar, Founder and Proprietor of "Double Delights Events", an Events Planning Company that focuses on serving community initiatives and events.

Leslie Butlar's 'one-minute elevator speech' (I am sure you know what that is) from her curriculum vitae is a fine synopsis of her abilities, successes, and career objectives.

Here is what it says: "A passionate, driven, and multilingual HR/Event Specialist with extensive experience in multi-national corporations utilizing a creative "out of the box" approach that enables executive and management staff to exceed strategic objectives"

Since 2006, Leslie has put all her knowledge and experience to work at her own events planning company. That is very much in line with the many entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley who, at some point in their careers, found their employers' infrastructures, guidelines, and often insufficiently defined business models too confining to allow for what Leslie calls an "out of the box" creative approach.

So what does Leslie bring to the plate?

She gained her experience at multi-national companies after graduating from UCSB in Santa Barbara with a B.A. majoring in Germanic Languages and Literature.

Not wasting any time, she worked for 14 years for various divisions of Siemens AG. Munich Germany in HR, as liaison and facilitator for Siemens German staff transfers to the US and US staff to Germany. Given her organizational talents she was also assigned to assist with confidential company projects between Siemens and NATO defense contractors.

Her knowledge of German, her attendance of an "Education Abroad Program" at the University of Goettingen/Germany and her increasingly responsible positions at Siemens testify to her technical as well as interpersonal skills.

In 1994 Leslie returned to the US to care for her parents. She continued to work for Siemens, this time as specialist for HR Process improvements for Siemens Medical Solutions in Mountain View, CA.

In 2003, after 23 years with Siemens, she accepted a position of "Global Sales Onboarding Registration Manager" at Cisco Systems Inc. in San Jose.During the two-year assignment Leslie was solely responsible for HR training and logistics for the company's Global Onboarding flagship program for Account Managers and Engineers (attended by 200 participants each month).

In 2006 Leslie put all her experience in events planning, -organizing and -execution and her interpersonal skills to the test: She started her own company "Double Delights Events" based in Cupertino. She is now a member of SVCA and - here again - is putting her many skills to good use.

Please welcome Leslie Butlar to SVCA and wish her much success with "Double Delights Events".
