    Create a Love of Books: How to HelpYour Child Become an Avid Reader

    (NewsUSA) - Most parents understandthe value of sharing reading experienceswith their child. However, not all realize

    that the way they read to their little one,and even how they interact with their childduring playtime, can impact learning.Parents can help grow literacy skills whileteaching their child to draw, play catch orcount numbers. Whats most important ismaking these experiences fun, engagingand memorable.

    The more children interact with readingmaterial, the more active and confidentreaders they become, says Dr. CarolynJaynes, literacy learning designer atLeapFrog, a developer of innovative,technology-based educational products.Read with your child at an early age, andbuild fun daily routines that incorporatereading.

    Dr. Jaynes offers the following tips forparents who want to help their childrenbecome active, avid readers:

    * Read often. Practice pays off. Themore kids read, the more they grow skills.

    A nightly bedtime story is a good place tostart.

    * Make reading fun. The more engagingthe reading experience, the more itbenefits the child. Make story books cometo life by giving characters different voicesand adding drama to the narration; whena character acts surprised or sad, changeyour tone to express the emotion. You wantyour children to realize that, beneath the

    surface of the text, there is a great storyfilled with imagination.

    * Help kids interact with the readingmaterial. Asking questions will help yourchild remember the story. Talk with themabout the narrative, and ask what theythink of a characters decision. What wouldthey do differently? What do they think willhappen next? Encourage them to interruptyou if they dont understand a word.

    * Point out the illustrations. Have yourchild demonstrate their comprehension ofthe narrative by pointing to story elementsin the illustration. For example, askquestions like Can you point to the bearthat looks worried? or Where was thewolf hiding before he crossed the road?

    Technology Rules for Digital Kids

    (NewsUSA) - Whether texting, surfing theweb or playing video games, research hasshown that kids spend more than seven

    hours a day with gadgets. That, in andof itself, is neither good nor bad, saysRichard Bavaria, Senior Vice President forEducation Outreach for Sylvan Learning.Balance, as in every other aspect of life,is key. While tech-savvy kids may have aleg up over those without a fundamentalknowledge, kids tethered to technologymay have their own disadvantages --socially, academically and, perhaps, evenemotionally.

    For good or for bad, technology hasintroduced many portals of distraction inkids lives -- easy ways to get sidetracked,diverted and overwhelmed. But as theschool year progresses, parents want theirkids clearly focused rather than busily

    distracted.

    Wonder how you can reach a balance?Bavaria and the experts at Sylvan LearningCenter offer the following tips:

    Your rules rule. Remember: Youre theboss. Like all rules for kids, the clearer andsimpler, the better.

    Set time limits. A good rule of thumb forteens is two hours of screen time per day,including schoolwork. Decide what worksbest for your family.

    Set place limits. No TV during dinner, forexample, or when the familys having adiscussion. Many families find that itsbest if the computer is in the family room

    -- not in kids rooms -- and used only whenyoure present.

    Set site limits. Discuss the sites yourchildren want to visit, and discuss whichones theyre permitted to use. If some sitesare off-limits, explain why youre vetoingthem.

    Schoolwork comes first. Study and chorescome before socializing and games. Ifyour child still struggles sans distractingtechnology, get them the help they need.Find a tutor at www.sylvanlearning.com.

    Stress privacy. Explain why you shouldntgive out personal information to strangerson the Internet. You dont have to be scary,

    just realistic and firm.

    Stress your values. Explain that it is rightfor them to come to you whenever theyencounter something online that makesthem uncomfortable or they suspectyou would disapprove of -- sex, hatred,intolerance or violence, for instance. Justas we watch what we say in our speech,stress to your kids that its important to dothe same online.

    Be a role model. Let the kids see you usingyour computer and phone to make your lifeeasier, more efficient and more fun. Showhow youre in control of these devices, notthe other way around.

    Stay on Track to Your Destination WithRegular Tire Maintenance

    (NewsUSA) - When the rubber meets theroad this summer, will you be prepared?Summer heat can be tough on tires,which makes regular tire checks a criticalpart of your general vehicle maintenanceschedule. Heat combined with impropertire pressure, uneven wear or damageand poor alignment can cause potentiallydangerous driving conditions and put adamper on your summer road trip plans.

    Unfortunately, 83 percent of motoristsarent aware of how under- or over-inflated tires affect a vehicles steering andbreaking control as well as fuel economy,explained Mark Ballard of Discount Tire,

    the worlds largest tire and wheel retailer.In addition, regularly checking your tiresfor uneven or worn tread and bald spots,

    as well as replacing all four tires insteadof one or two at a time, will help avoidhazards like blowouts and keep you ontrack to your destination.

    According to the Rubber ManufacturersAssociation (RMA), more than 23,000 tow-away crashes were due to flat tires.

    Here are the top five tips to ensure propertire safety:

    1. Get Pressure Right. In its 2011 TireCare Awareness Survey, the RMA foundthat 62 percent of drivers dont knowwhere to find the correct inflation pressurefor their vehicle. The specific inflationpressure number can be found on thevehicle placard located on the driversside doorpost, glove box door or fuel dooror in the owners manual. For accuratepressure, check tires when cool, and dontforget the spare. A properly inflated tire will

    save you nine cents per gallon at the gaspump and improve vehicle fuel efficiencyby 3.3 percent.

    2. Dont Overload Vehicle. Overloadingdecreases fuel economy due to increasedwind drag and cargo weight. Handling,control and braking are also negativelyimpacted.

    3. Rotate Before You Go. Regular rotationhelps achieve uniform tire wear andimprove road performance. Tires rotatedevery 6,000 -- 8,000 miles prolong thelife of the tire and help maximize your tireinvestment. It makes sense to get a tireinspection when you rotate.

    4. Straighten Up. Proper tire alignment

    provides safe, predictable vehiclecontrol as well as a ride that is smooth,comfortable and free of pulling or vibration.Proper alignment helps tires wear evenlyand last longer.

    5. Bald Isnt Beautiful. The RMA surveyalso found that 52 percent of drivers do notknow how to tell if their tires are bald. Lackof tread affects the tires ability to grip wetroads. Make sure tires dont have unevenwear, high or low areas or unusuallysmooth areas that can increase the risk ofroad accidents.

    Keep Gnats From Becoming A Pain inthe Neck

    (NewsUSA) - Swatting at gnats and bugsall day is literally -- and figuratively -- apain in the neck. But did you know that thesame product you use to massage awaythose aches and pains can also keep thosepesky bugs away in the first place?

    W.F. Young, Inc., the marketers ofAbsorbine Jr. Pain Relieving Liquid, oftenhear just that.

    We noticed an increase in the numberof inquiries to our customer servicedepartment regarding Absorbine Jr. and

    its ability to help with gnats, said RobertJ. Wallace, Vice President of Sales at W.F.Young, Inc. We do not market or makeany claims that Absorbine Jr. helps inthis way, but it became a word-of-mouthphenomenon. We also heard from ourretailers that they couldnt keep the producton their shelves.

    Shinn Bussel, a general merchandise/drugmanager at the Schnucks supermarketin Betendorf, Iowa, is just one of thoseretailers amazed at the productspopularity. After watching Absorbine Jr.fly off the shelves, I decided to try it myselfand was amazed, she said. I dont knowwhat makes the product so effective, butthe swarming gnats left me alone.

    Standing and stretching the legs everytwo to four hours is advised for travelersat risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT),said Dr. David Stone, a member of theSociety for Vascular Surgery. Vascularsurgeons encourage exercise during travelto maintain healthy veins and arteries.

    With extended travel, a blood clot can

    potentially form in the veins of the leg. Ifthe clot breaks loose and travels to thelungs, it causes a pulmonary embolism.

    Each year, 300,000 to 600,000 Americansdie of a blood clot in the lungs, accordingto 2011 Centers for Disease Control andPrevention statistics. Risk factors for theunder-diagnosed, preventable conditionare:

    * Vein injury, including major surgery

    * Slow blood flow from limited movement

    * Increased estrogen levels frommedications

    * Chronic illnesses, such as heartdisease, lung disease, cancer treatment or

    inflammatory bowel disease

    * Family history of DVT

    * Age

    * Obesity

    * Smoking

    * High blood pressure

    * A catheter in a central vein

    * An inherited clotting disorder

    Almost anyone can be affected. In 2003,39-year-old NBC News reporter DavidBloom died of a blood clot after weeks oftraveling around Baghdad in a crampedmilitary tank.

    Whenever traveling in confined places,persons at risk of developing DVT shouldraise and lower their heels and toes andtighten and release their leg muscles, saidDr. Stone. This helps to promote blood

    flow to the legs. Also, drink plenty of water,and wear loose-fitting clothes.

    Vascular surgeons suggest a regularexercise routine, a healthy body weightand not smoking as preventive measuresagainst DVT. Ultrasound tests can detectDVT.

    Since half of DVT patients neverexperience warning signs, early detectionis important.

    Anticoagulant medication can help treatDVT. Visit the Society for Vascular Surgerywebsite, VascularWeb.org, for morevascular health information.
