Always the Bridesmaid? You CanWear the Dresses Again
(NewsUSA) - And youll be able to wear it again! is a phrase often used aroundbridesmaids dresses. Because a ridiculouslyexpensive lime-green taffeta shepherdessgown is appropriate for almost any occasion, and the Peter Pan collar is poised to make acomeback any century now.
If youre one of the many women who haspiles of Pepto-Bismol-colored rufes stuffedin the back of her closet, never fear -; you willbe able to wear that dress again. Host an oldbridesmaids dress party, and the good timesmay even blot out the embarrassment of havinghad to wear that dress in the rst place.
Where to start? The concept is simple -- inviteall of your girlfriends over, and tell them to wear
their most hideous bridesmaid dress. Not onlywill you get to rewear the bridesmaids dressesof weddings past, youll also get to laugh atsome of the more hideous outts. Note: if youwere a bridesmaid at a friends wedding, either dont invite her or try not to wear the dress shechose, even if it does include a tutu and puffedsleeves.
dding an inexpensive spin to classic elegances the way to go. Skip the chips and dip in favor f a fruit-and-cheese platter. For a refreshing
wist on champagne, the traditional weddingibation, pick up a few bottles of a fruit- avoredparkling wine. Arbor Mist (arbormist.com),hich is known for fruit and wine combinations
ike Strawberry White Zinfandel and BlackberryMerlot, has recently released a line of sparklingwines. Both the Peach Sparkle and theRaspberry Sparkle combine light and crispsparkling wine with natural fruit, creating theperfect refreshment for a get-together with your girlfriends.
For entertainment, ask each woman to tell thestory behind her bridesmaid dress. You canalso have fun playing a wedding-themed roundof Pictionary or charades. You can also holda vote to nd out, for once and for all, whichone of you had to endure the wearing the worstbridesmaid dress.

World Trade Center beamwill rise again
Sept. 11 memorial to be installed later thismonth at DPS
BIG RAPIDS After two years of e-mails,phone calls and one trip to New York City, BigRapids Public Safety Deputy Director WarrenHansens vision of installing a piece of theWorld Trade Center in front of the DPS bui ldingwill soon come to fruition.
n 8-foot long structural H-beam from theorld Trade Center will be put on permanent
isplay in front of the DPS building at the end of he month. DPS is waiting for electrical wire toe installed for lighting before pouring concrete
o mount the beam.
We feel really special to have this piece of istory here in Big Rapids, Hansen said. Toe able to put it out in front of our building is aery personal thing. Our reghters and policefcers relate to it on a real personal level.
ansen worked with the Port Authority of Nework and New Jersey for about two years tobtain the beam. The piece of the Twin Towersas provided free of charge, as long as it was
or a municipality or nonprot organization andisplayed as a public memorial. Hansen drove
o New York City in April to bring the beam toig Rapids.
DPS had Simonds International cut one end of the beam on an 11-degree angle so it could bestood up on end. The beam was then taken toFerris State University in July, where instructorswelded the 2,800-pound beam to a 3-foot by2-foot 1-inch thick steel base.
The walkway leading up to DPS front door hasbeen torn up in preparation for the monument.Once mounted in front of DPS, pieces of brokenconcrete will be stacked around the base toresemble the wreckage of the towers.
When I rst started looking at this thing, it gaveme goosebumps, said Ferris welding professor Dave Murray. Its awesome to be able to be apart of this project.
Starting this fall, Ferris welding students willresearch the beam to discover where it wasforged and where it was located in one of thetowers.
We (the instructors) think we can pretty muchgure out where this beam was, but were goingto do the research as a student activity, Murraysaid. Because this H-beam is so unique to thedesign of the building, I think students are goingto nd out where it was located pretty easily.
Although the beam has been in Big Rapidssince April, Hansen is still awestruck by itspresence.
It was our brothers and sisters that lost their lives out there that day in New York, Hansensaid. This is going to be a really good reminder every day of how proud we are to be reghters
and police ofcers.

Get the Facts About Cataractsand Surgery
(NewsUSA) - Though cataracts are the leadingcause of vision loss worldwide, myths persistabout their cause and treatment. Cataractsaffect nearly 22 million Americans age 40and older. By age 80, more than half of all
Americans will have cataracts, according to theNational Eye Institute.
Cataracts are not preventable, but they are
treatable, said Richard P. Mills, MD, andthe best way to ensure vision stays healthyfor a lifetime is to schedule a visit with anophthalmologist. More than 90 percent of the people who have cataract surgery regainuseful vision.
As the eyes lens, located behind the pupil, grows older, its cells die and accumulate. The result is blurred vision and fuzzyimages. Eye injuries, certain medications anddiseases such as diabetes are also known tocause cataracts. In the early stages, stronger lighting and eyeglasses may lessen visionproblems caused by cataracts. But at a certainpoint, cataract surgery -- the most frequentlyperformed operation in the country -- may be
necessary. There are four common cataractmyths to dispel:
* MYTH 1: Eye drops can prevent or dissolvecataracts.
o FACT: The Food and Drug Administrationhas not approved any drops that cure or delaycataracts. Since cataracts are not a substance, there is nothing for the drops to dissolve.
* MYTH 2: Close-up tasks like reading or sewing make cataracts worse.
o FACT: Cataracts are not caused by howpeople use their eyes. However, cataractslikely become more noticeable during closework. One sign of a cataract is the need for more light to do the same activities.
* MYTH 3: Cataracts are reversible.
o FACT: The lens naturally clouds as it ages;this process is unavoidable and irreversible. But its progress can be slowed by quittingsmoking, eating a balanced diet and wearingsunglasses.
If you are age 65 and older and you thinkyou have cataracts, you may qualify for afree eye exam. The eye exams are providedby a program called EyeCare America, anorganization that works with nearly 7,000volunteer ophthalmologists across the U.S.and Puerto Rico. Visit www.eyecareamerica.org to see if you or a loved one qualies for this care.
Eyeing the Window to Your Health
(NewsUSA) - Some say the eyes are windows
to the soul. But did you know that the eyedisease age-related macular degeneration(AMD) can also indicate increased risk of heartattack or stroke?
EyeCare America, a public service programof the Foundation of the American Academyof Ophthalmology, is raising awareness about
AMD and its potential window to healththrough your eyes.
Imagine seeing black holes in your eld of vision instead of your family, your gardenor your favorite book. More than 10 million
Americans suffer from AMD. AMD occurs whenabnormal blood vessels grow under the eyesmacula, where the sharpest, central visionoccurs. Its the leading cause of vision loss for those 65 and older. While not curable, AMDsadvancement can be delayed and treated, leading to many more years of healthy visionfor those who detect it early through an eyeexam.
This same blood vessel damage can alsoindicate risk for heart attack or stroke -- asmuch as 8 to 10 times greater. An Australianstudy noted that among those whose healthwas followed for a number of years, subjectswith AMD had more than double the incidenceof heart attack or stroke.
Eye exams let patients know of increased risk
for other serious health problems.
EyeCare America provides eye exams at noout-of-pocket cost to people 65 and older andoffers online medication assistance information.Eye exams are provided by a corps of nearly7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across theU.S. and Puerto Rico.
Those interested in the program can visit www.eyecareamerica.org to see if they are eligible. The organizations online referral center alsoenables friends and family members to nd outinstantly whether their loved ones are eligible tobe matched with a volunteer ophthalmologist.
EyeCare America is designed for people who
are U.S. senior citizens or legal residentswho havent seen an ophthalmologist in threeor more years. Additional information can be
found at www.eyecareamerica.org.
3 Ways to Cut Your Energy Bill
(NewsUSA) - During hotter days, the wonderfulcoolness of our air-conditioned homes iscomforting until the whopping energy billarrives. The American Lighting Associatio(ALA) offers the following easy ways to usless energy and save money.
Replace bulbs with CFLs
Switch out incandescent light bulbs witcompact uorescent versions.
A compact uorescent lamp (CFL) can providthe same amount of light as an incandescenby using only one-quarter of the electricity, explains Joe Rey-Barreau, education consultanfor the ALA and an associate professor at thUniversity of Kentuckys School of InterioDesign.
One of the great myths regarding lightintoday is that the federal government isbanning incandescent lighting, Rey-Barreausays. This is false. Incandescent lighting isnot being banned. The new legislation is onlaffecting the standard 100-watt incandescenbulb, which will no longer be sold beginning i2012. However, an incandescent bulb that usesonly 72 watts will replace it. This new bulb useshalogen incandescent technology to producemore efcient incandescent bulb.
Install ceiling fans
Install a ceiling fan in frequently occupied rooms.Ceiling fans use a fraction of the electricity oan AC unit. Therefore, the thermostat can braised six degrees -- say, to 78 degrees -- andmake a room feel as comfortable as if thambient temperature were really 72 degrees.
Utilize lighting controls
Lighting controls are an excellent option fosaving energy. It is not necessary to invest incomprehensive control system where the entir house is rewired. There are simple and lessexpensive methods for controlling light to savenergy, such as motion sensors, photocellsthat operate according to light levels, timersand dimmers.
Thanks to breaking technology, lighting hasbecome more efcient than ever before. Visian ALA-member lighting showroom to receivprofessional tips on energy-saving. To nda local ALA-member showroom, go to www.americanlightingassoc.com.

food with nutrients and vitamins, not justpotato chips and snack packs. For even better efciency, plan lunches a week ahead.
3. Find a quick and balanced breakfast option. Not many parents have time for eggs andpancakes each morning, but there are quick, quality alternatives. Stock up on cereals thatkidswill enjoy and are high in ber, folic acid, iron, and vitamin C. Try Malt-O-Meal for familyfavorite varieties packed with whole grains. Asan added bonus, Malt-O-Meal is available inresealable bags, which reduces the amountof packaging consumers have to dispose of or recycle by 75 percent. (BagTheBox.com)
4. Make a weekly calendar of activities.Organize each family members schedule tomake sure kids are where they need to beat the correct times. Between extracurricular activities, like sports, clubs, study groups, jobsand friends, it can be a challenge to establishany sort of routine. Set up car pools in casesome events overlap. Input alerts in your phone, and set an alarm for each to avoidtemporary mental lapses.
A Bright Spot for Your Rainy-Day Savings
(NewsUSA) - Ben Franklin once declared, Apenny saved is a penny earned. Yet, equallyenlightening are his thoughts on expenses:Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sinka great ship.
nd there are plenty of leaks that can scuttlean already-tight budget. For instance, a spouseidled by the sour economy, a fender bender withthe family car, or an unexpected hospitalization.Thats why nancial advisors recommend thatyou have a rainy-day fund -- enough liquidassets to cover three to six months worth of
emergency living expenses. In case of nancialemergency, access to additional money willsave you from relying on credit cards or loansthat simply compound the problem.
When starting an emergency fund, there are afew key points to take into consideration:
1. Determine what amount is best for you. Mostexperts agree that you should keep betweenthree and six months worth of your livingexpenses set aside in your emergency fund.Your specic situation -- whether you havechildren, carry substantial debt and types of insurance coverage you have -- will determinewhat amount is best for you. Examine your situation -- your income and your needs -- todecide how much you should save.
2. Start small. Starting an emergency fund canbe as simple as depositing $100 into your high-interest savings account. But before you begin,be sure that youre meeting your basic livingexpenses. And as you build your emergencyfund, be sure youre also reducing your spending and avoiding debt.
3. Stick to a schedule. Get into the habit of making regular deposits. Whether it is weekly,bi-weekly or monthly, create a schedule andstick to it. Once you make saving automatic, you wont even have to think about it.
4. Consider an online savings account. In manycases, an online savings account may makemore sense than an account at a traditional,bricks-and-mortar bank. Thats because manytraditional banks are not currently offering asavings option with interest rates high enoughto meaningfully beat ination. In addition, anonline savings account is a reliable way tomanage your money.
AAA and Discover Bank partnered to bringmembers highly competitive rates on an onlinesavings account. The AAA Online Savings
Account is a great option to begin building arainy-day fund:
* Preferred member rates over ve times thenational savings average
* $500 minimum opening deposit and nominimum balance required
* FDIC insurance up to $250,000

Stop Bullying Before It Starts
(NewsUSA) - Whats the best way to stopa bully? Dont let him (or her) become one.Multiple studies have shown that teachingchildren positive social skills and takingproactive steps to prevent and discouragedelinquent behavior can go a long way towardpreventing bullying and providing a moreeffective learning environment.
Unfortunately, childhood bullying has becomea 24/7 problem, and the anonymity of theInternet makes it more difcult to identify andpunish bullies. But programs in which schoolsand the community work together to preventbullying and reduce disruptive behavior canmake a difference.
The benets of bullying prevention programsinclude freeing teachers to teach, insteadof spending their time disciplining students. These programs also cut down on chaos inthe classroom and foster a positive learningenvironment.
Michelle Molina, president and CEO oPeaceBuilders says that Children need tbe given the skills so they can solve thesproblems and adults need to be the guides onthe sides.
According to the nonprot organization ChildTrends, PeaceBuilders has been found twork in increasing conict resolution skills andreducing aggression and bullying.
PeaceBuilders is a program designed to fostea positive environment not only in schools, buat home and in the community. The program ialready in place in thousands of schools acrosthe United States, where it is successfully usedto prevent and decrease bullying and othedisruptive behavior.
PeaceBuilders is designed to combat bullyinearly through a combination of school-basedprograms, parent training and communitoutreach. Parents are a critical part of thprogram, ensuring that practices are duplicatedat home. The PeaceBuilders program can btailored to ages and developmental levels fropreschool through high school.
The program works by rst identifying risfactors for bullying, including violent oaggressive behavior, drug use and tobaccuse. PeaceBuilders provides tools to fostecivil behavior and to discourage disruptivbehavior. Then a roadmap is created thaincludes regularly praising children and teenfor good behavior at school and at home, whildiscouraging bad behavior. Involving parents inthe behavior improvement before adolescenchelps communities create a way of life thaencourages people to be nicer to each other.
