BIG RAPIDS Two men whoallegedly stole three snowmobilesrom two Mecosta Countyusinesses were arraignedednesday in Mecosta Countys

7th District Court.Nicholas Lee Skaggs, 24, andDerek Richard Bonner, 19, both ofBig Rapids, were arraigned threeounts of snowmobile theft.kaggs is being held in the

Mecosta County Jail on a $100,000

bail and a parole detainer. Bonneris being held on $10,000 bail.The arrests stemmed from twoseparate reports the MecostaCounty Sheriffs Office received ofstolen snowmobiles on Tuesday.Two snowmobiles were reportedstolen from Lakeside MotorSports in Mecosta and one morewas stolen from Remus Repair inRemus. Both snowmobiles wererecovered.

5th Grade going to the Symphony

5th Grade students are preparing for their trip to the GrandRapids Symphony on February 24, 2011. As part of thepreparation, they created art work that will be submittedbased on Igor Stravinski's Firebird Suite. Students read theoriginal folktale and learned about the original ballet. Theartwork will go through a selection process and may bedisplayed during one of the 5th Grade Concerts.

Therapy Dogsvisit Brookside

Students in 2nd grade at Brookside Elementary were visited by therapy dogsthrough the Riley Mackenzie Fund. They provide education at the grammarschool level with their Certified Therapy Dogs to teach children how to properlycare for animals, how to approach stray animals, and why it is important to spayand neuter animals. Big Rapids High School Hosted Blood Drive

Big Rapids High School National Honors Society hosted their annual AmericanRed Cross Blood Drive on January 24th. NHS students organize, promote andrun the blood drive under the supervision of the NHS adviser Glen Phelps.When asked how long has BRHS been hosting blood drives? Mr. Phelps

stated that, "Big Rapids HighSchool has been hosting blooddrives for at least eleven years".Mr. Phelps also replied, "Wehave an average of 20% of the

junior and senior studentbody participate in the blooddrives. Students who are a

junior or senior can donate blood. Students were encouraged to get a good nightsleep and eat a healthy breakfast before giving blood. The Blood drive was opento the public as well. Pictured, Senior Ben Straley gives blood while otherstudents are waiting for their turn to give.

Library Companion

Eighth grade students enjoy the company of Alvin, the Library'snewest companion. Although he belongs to Media Specialist Mrs.Aris, the rabbit has become an instant friend to the middle school.
