Its a common misconception that only car dealerships can perform

the maintenance services on a new vehicle that is under warranty.

Clearly, consumers can have their maintenance done by their localindependent repair shop without affecting the warranty.

    TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR

    CAR IN SNOWY CONDITIONS

(NewsUSA) - When the weatherutside is frightful, the road is

the last place you want to be,especially if your car hasnt beenprepared to deal with snowyconditions. Snow and ice coveringthe roadways can pose a seriousthreat to you and your vehicle.

There is no time like the presento get yourself and your car

ready for winter driving. FirestoneComplete Auto Care offers thefollowing tips to get you on yourway:

    Slow down

    * Reduce your speed duringadverse driving conditions, andbe prepared for longer stoppingdistances on snowy or icypavement. Try to avoid abruptmovements when braking, accelerating or turning.

    Tires are the key

    * A tires PSI (pounds per squareinch) can drop one pound for every10-degree drop in temperature. Both under- and over-inflationlessens a tires gripping action.Once it gets cold, tire pressureshould be checked weekly. Dontforget to check your spare tire, too.

    * If snow and ice are a problemin your area, consider installingwinter tires, which are specially

designed to grip slick roads. Snowtires should be installed on all fourwheels; using two different typesof tires on the same vehicle cancause handling problems.

    Be seen

    * Always use headlights atdawn and dusk, or while drivingin fog, rain and snow, to warnother drivers you are there. If youcant see them, they cant see

you! Dont forget to activate yourflashers when appropriate.

    * Take a few moments to checkyour wipers -- they dont lastforever. If the rubber feels roughor seems cracked, replace thewiper blades. Older wiper bladescan cause windows to becomedangerously dirty, especially atnight or in snowy conditions whenthere is likely to be salt on the road.Good visibility is a necessity.

No matter the time of year, it isimportant to take the appropriatemeasures to ensure that yourvehicle is well maintained. However, during winter, whenthe roads and conditions areparticularly unpredictable, propermaintenance is essential forkeeping your car prepared foranything the season delivers.

    IMPROVE INDOOR AIR

    QUALITY FOR A HEALTHIERHOME

(NewsUSA) - When the weatherreport issues an air quality warning, some people stay indoors, buttheres no guarantee that the airin the home is any healthier thanthe air outside. Common indoorair pollutants such as dust mitegrime, pet dander, mold, tobaccosmoke, and airborne allergensand germs may be lurking aboutwithout anyone ever noticing.

Adults spend up to 90 percentof their time indoors and inhaleapproximately 2,300 gallons ofair a day. Given that, people facesignificant, ongoing exposure toa variety of unwelcome indoor airpollutants. Extended exposureto these pollutants can causeeye, nose and throat irritation, respiratory problems, headache, fatigue and even allergysymptoms. Asthmatics, theelderly and children are the mostvulnerable to indoor air pollutantsand can develop more serioussymptoms. Prolonged exposureto some pollutants has even been

linked to cancer or other seriousdiseases.

Homeowners do, however, havethe power to combat indoor airpollutants and improve theirhomes air quality.

One common first line of defenseis a home air filtration system. These devices filter pollutants fromthe air circulating throughout thehome. The award-winning Carrier

Infinity Air Purifier, for example, not only traps pollutants, it alsouses a unique ionization processto kill bacteria, viruses and mold, which standard air cleaners cantdo. The whole-home purifier, installed in line with the ductworkof a homes heating, ventilationand air conditioning system,re-purifies the air as many aseight times an hour, removing amajority of pathogens, allergensand pet dander. In fact, the Infinity

Air Purifier cleans more than 100times more air than some of thepopular portable units.

But an air purifier shouldnt haveto do all the work. Homeownersneed to do their part by maintaininga clean household. Simple thingslike asking people to take offtheir shoes at the front door orpreventing family and guestsfrom smoking indoors go a longway toward clearing indoor air,

allowing homeowners to breathea fresh sigh of relief.

For more information on improvingyour indoor air quality, visit www.residential.carrier.com.

    FOODS TO BRING HEALTHY

    SMILES TO KIDS FACES

(NewsUSA) - You probably knowthat sweets and soda are bad foyour childrens teeth, but haveyou stopped to think about whatfoods are good for their teeth?

Some foods support tooth andgum health. Keep these foods inmind the next time you pack you

    childrens lunches:

    * Look for vegetables high invitamin A. Veggies like pumpkin, sweet potatoes, broccoli andcarrots are high in vitamin A,which is important in the formationof tooth enamel. Try packing babycarrots in childrens lunchboxes omaking homemade, baked sweetpotato fries.

    * Say cheese. Cheese

helps balance the pH in themouth, making it less friendlyfor destructive bacteria. It alsocontains calcium. Just be sure towatch portion sizes, as cheese ishigh in fat and salt. An appropriateserving of natural cheese, likecheddar, is the size of two dominopieces.

    * Snack on fruit. You may knowthat vitamin C is good for youskin, but did you know that itsalso good for your gums? Healthygums help support teeth, somake sure your children getenough vitamin C. For their size, kiwis have more vitamin C thanany other fruit. If green thingsare a tough sell, try apple slices, strawberries or orange wedges.

    Dont Forget Good Oral Hygiene!

Remember that there is nosubstitute for good oral hygiene.Make sure your children brushtheir teeth twice a day withfluoridated toothpaste and flossat least once a day. Teach them tdrink water after eating, as it willhelp flush food from their mouth.

Of course, children arent alwaysthe most diligent brushers andflossers. Some parents give theichildren an oral care

probiotic, such as EvoraKids(www.myevorakids.com), to helppick up any slack in kids oral carehabits. Oral care probiotics work

    PHOTOGRAPHING HAPPY MEMORIES

    CAN BE A SNAP

(NAPSI)-With just a littlebit of planning and a basicunderstanding of your camerasfeatures and modes, creating

great photo memories can bequick and easy.

The features and capabilitiesfound in todays point-and-shoot cameras are much moreadvanced, creative and fun thanin years past. Heres a look at justa few:

Classic Images: Black-and-white photography has a classicappeal because it enhancesdetail and captures the depth of

a given subject. For an elegant

picture, take the camera out ofAuto mode and select the B&Woption. Similarly, you can capturean image with the Sepia Tonemode to create a golden brown,

antiqued photograph thats nicefor a family portrait.

Come to the Point: All goodphotographs have a main focalpoint that draws the attention ofthe viewer.

Find a Fun Perspective:Capturing your photos in adifferent, creative perspectiveusing the Fish-Eye Effect orMiniature Effect mode can letyou create fun images to share

with your friends. The Fish-EyeEffect creates a ballooned outperspective of the subject youreshooting.

The Miniature Effect mode blursthe top and bottom of an image togive the effect of photographinga miniature-scale model. This isexcellent for shooting landscapesor scenery from a high vantagepoint. You can choose to keep theimage B&W and accent one color, such as red or green, with Color

Accent mode. In this mode, you

can unleash an artistic touch tocreate beautiful black-and-whitephotos, isolating a single colorthat will pop out of the image.

Bounce off the Walls: Your flash, that is. Instead of a picture takenin the harsh light of a direct flash, aim the flash at the wall or ceilingand photograph your subjectin the warm glow of its diffusedlight.

Smile and Shoot: You can alsouse a self-timer to make sureeveryone in your family photo ispicture ready. Use your camerasself-timer to make sure the entirefamily is in place for the photo.

Instead of a self-timer, certainCanon cameras have SmartShutter Technology. With a singlewink at the camera, it releasesthe shutter and takes the photo. You can also set the camera todetect a smile and the shutterwill then be released. This avoidsyou having to rush into the pictureand gives everyone time to put ontheir best smile.

Fill the Frame: A common erroramong part-time photographers

is that the subjects seem off in the

distance with lots of space arounthem. Fill your frame with yousubject either by using your zoolens or just moving in closer.

Bright Ideas for Taking Pictures ithe Dark: With so many fine photopportunities taking place in lolight during nighttime, you macare to consider a camera thacomes equipped with technologto ensure crisp photos when lighis not optimal. To help maximizyour photos in dark settingsmost digital cameras offer NighMode for clear photos even wheshooting in low-light situationsCanon has a new feature in itPowerShot models, called the H

(high-sensitivity) System. Thihelps capture high-quality imagein low light without the use offlash, expand the cameradynamic range and reduce noisat high ISO levels, ultimatelcapturing greater detail and coloin images in low-light settings.
