ST. MARYS GOES TECH
SAVVY NEW TECHNOLOGY
ENABLES INTERACTIVE
LEARNING FOR STUDENTSBIG RAPIDS Angela Reeder nowhas an easier way to determine whichstudents in her class are struggling withhelp from new interactive technology.Reeder, a middle school teacher atSt. Marys Catholic School, was oneof many teachers to receive a newSmartBoard when she returned tothe classroom on Tuesday. The newinteractive white boards installed in sixclassrooms allow teachers to teachinteractively through online lessonplans, hands-on learning materialsand student response systems, whichallow students to send their responseto questions on quizzes and lessons
through the push of a button.Teachers can immediately see if theirstudents understand the conceptsthat theyre teaching through thistechnology, Reeder said. Itsawesome. The lessons have alreadyeen created.tudents can learn subjects includingath, English, science, foreign
anguages and handwriting throughhe SmartBoards, which allow teachersnd students to demonstrate conceptsy directing technology on the boards
hrough touch.he new technology is the result ofdonation from the Shaw and Betty
alker Foundation, which providedunds for St. Marys to purchaseaterials where it saw fit in December.he SmartBoards, projectors andomputers were installed over theummer, Principal Barb Borth said.he school also purchased a digitalicroscope and camera with theonated funds.he SmartBoards will allow teachers tossess students quickly and make sure
hey are grasping concepts. It also willllow them to identify which studentsre struggling with a given subject, here one-on-one teaching can takelace. It opens a whole new world for the
ids through this technology, Borthaid. So much is made of assessment, hether its on the MEAP or otherenchmarks. The teachers are soxcited to use it.tudents also shared in the excitement.eventh grade student JonathacAdams said the technology allows
tudents to go back and review notesf they werent in school on a particularay or just review the concepts thatere taught on a given subject.
If you didnt save your notes, you cano back and copy them, she said.he fact that the SmartBoards are
nteractive also allows students to takemore hands-on approach to learning, ighth grade student Matthew Beistleaid. Students in Reeders class spentart of their afternoon on Wednesdaylaying counting games and looking atow to dissecting a frog without any of

CUTTING HEALTH CARE
SPENDING WITHOUT
CUTTING HEALTH COVERAGE(NewsUSA) - During these tougheconomic times, as America continuesto look at cost cutting options, manypeople will be shopping for a healthinsurance plan. Its important to know
that there are health plans that areaffordable and are a fit for you and yourfamily while still offering the coverageyou need to protect your family.
Know your needs. What types ofcoverage are most important to you?Do you or a family member take aprescription regularly? Knowing howmuch coverage you need is importantwhen deciding which health care planis best.
Learn the lingo. Some insurers areworking to use more consumer-friendlylanguage. Learning how a high-deductible plan tied to a health savingsaccount (HSA) that offers choiceamong physicians and hospitals andhow it works best with your needs, isimportant.
Availability when you need it most. Many insurers are working hard toensure customers have health-relatedinformation when they need it, such as:
* Use of understandable consumer-friendly language
* Access to customer call centers andnurse hotlines 24/7, 365 days a year, giving constant access to a nurse orperson to help solve a claims issue
* Online tools to search for claimsinformation and check for benefitqualifications, co-pays, and deductibles
* Tools to compare prices on the drugsyou need, helping find the best pricesavailable
Schedule that yearly appointment.Regular checkups can help preventpotential problems or catch conditionsearly, saving money.
Look for extras. Many insurersoffer discounts for programs such assmoking cessation, weight loss, fitnessclub memberships and other servicesalready being used by an individual.
Quality matters. Feel confident
about choosing the right individualplan for you. Check out report cardsfor different plans on the NationalCommittee for Quality AssurancesWeb site, available at http://reportcard.ncqa.org/plan/external/plansearch.aspx.
HEALTHIER MEALS ON THE
WAY TO SCHOOLS(NewsUSA) - For the first time in U.S.history, kids may face a shorter lifespanthan their parents. The cause? Obesity.
American children are suffering from
the obesity epidemic that has plaguedthe nation for the past decade. Today, nearly 20 percent of 6-11 year-olds andover 18 percent of 12-17 year-olds areobese, and over 1/3 of both age groupsare overweight. Childhood obesity hastripled in the last 30 years, accordingto the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention. A reliance on fast food, poor nutrition education, excessivecaloric intake and lack of physicalactivity have been blamed for the illhealth of the nations youth.
First Lady Michelle Obama has madechildhood obesity a central cause inher husbands administration. She has
initiated the Lets Move campaignto solve the epidemic of dangerouslyheavy children within a generation.
The goal is to give parents support, provide healthier meals in schools, encourage and enable kids to becomephysically active and to providehealthy, affordable food to all parts of
the country. We want our kids to facea different and more optimistic future interms of their lifespan, says the FirstLady.
A cornerstone of the Lets Movecampaign is the Healthier U.S. SchoolsChallenge Program, designed tocreate healthy and active kids. Theprogram calls for higher school foodquality, participation in meal programs, physical activity and nutritioneducation. Food service workersin more than 75 percent of schoolshave pledged to work with schoolauthorities to improve the nutrition inmeals. Teachers, principals and schooladministrators have sworn support forthe new measures. Major school foodsuppliers have agreed to decrease thesugar, fat and salt in school meals, andincrease the use of whole grains andproduce.
School suppliers of higher-quality foodat an affordable price are welcomingthe trend toward feeding nutritiouswholesome meals to the nations youth.Food safety leader iPura, producer oforganically cleaned seafood, providesschools with a safe, clean sourcethat includes guarantees of goodfarming and manufacturing practices
from Source-to-Kitchen. iPura offersschools the benefits of food safety, sustainability and the health attributesof seafood backed by a strongguarantee of quality, contributing tothe efforts of school meal authoritiesto improve the health of studentsnationwide.
Ending childhood obesity will requirethat parents, schools and foodcompanies join forces and maintainfocus for years to come. The lifespan ofour children depends on it.
ENGINEERS BRING HOPE TO
UNDEVELOPED NATIONS(NewsUSA) - Humanitarian outreachto the victims of natural disasters andpoverty oftentimes includes the workof medical professionals, missionariesand other volunteer organizations inan effort to bring emergency relief, aid and comfort. Now, engineers areresponding to the growing need toserve in humanitarian roles, buildingemergency shelters and designingsustainable technology systems toprovide assistance and hope in manyareas of the developing world.
Humanitarian engineering has come
to be defined as design underconstraints to directly improve thewellbeing of underserved populations. It has roots dating back to the FrenchRevolution, when a group of engineersat the Ecole Polytechnic debunkedNapoleons military aims and soughtinstead to employ their technical skillsto work for social justice.
More than 200 years later, engineersremain dedicated to helping those inneed. Todays
socially conscious engineers, particularly students, are workingon the scene in underdeveloped
communities around the world, tohelp create a new future for those atthe bottom of the economic pyramid.
For example, seven engineeringstudents at Dartmouth College recentlyvisited the village of Banda, Rwanda,to design and build a small-scalehydropower system to provide lighting
for local residents. After the systemwas installed, the students trainedthe villagers on its operations andsustainable maintenance.
Recently, the American Societyof Mechanical Engineers (ASME)created a Web-based open-sourceproject hosted by Western KentuckyUniversity, in which engineers andengineering students collaborated onthe design of a human-powered waterpurifier for use in remote regions ofthe developing world and locationsaffected by natural disasters and othercatastrophes.
ASME is a partner with the groupEngineers Without Borders-USA, whichoperates more than 400 projects inwater treatment, renewable energyand sanitation in about 45 developingcountries worldwide. Academicinstitutions, such as ValparaisoUniversity in Indiana and the ColoradoSchool of Mines, are teaching thevalue of the engineers worth tosociety by establishing a humanitarianengineering minor within the corecurriculum.
At ASME, a good mechanical engineeris many things, among them a public
servant. Going forward, ASME willencourage engineers to use theirskills and expertise to create lastingsolutions to improve the quality of lifeof individuals and communities in need. For information about ASME, visitwww.asme.org.
SHOPPING FOR A NEW
HOME? CHECK OUT THE
KITCHEN(NewsUSA) - Buying a home is thelargest investment most people willever make, so its no surprise that sucha big decision may seem daunting.
There are, however, some simpleguidelines that can help you find ahome that you will be happy with for avery long time.
A recent study conducted by Merillat,a leading manufacturer of cabinetry, examined what consumers think aboutwhen theyre purchasing a home. Thestudy found that the kitchen swaysmore minds than any other room, followed by the great room and themaster bedroom third.
The kitchen is the gathering place forspecial occasions, family functions andday-to-day activities, which is why it is
so important for prospective buyers toensure their new kitchen will meet theneeds of their family from a design andfunctionality prospective, said PaulRadoy, manager of design services forMerillat.
Try creating a checklist to help youdecide whether a kitchen is right foryou. Ask yourself these questions:
1. Do I like the layout of the kitchen?Consider the kitchen from an overallperspective, and keep all the items thatwill require storage in mind.
2. Does the kitchen look comfortable?Do I feel good when Im in it? Youshould feel at home right away.

Tips for Stress-Free Air Travel
(NewsUSA) - Man-made and naturaldisruptions to air travel are all-too-oftenthe norm. Not only can weather delaytake-offs and landings, but new airline
rules can also keep planes grounded.
For example, if a plane is sitting onthe tarmac for more than three hours,it has to return to the gate. On theupside, there are ways to cope with theunexpected. Here are a few simple tipsto prepare for delays before leavinghome:
* Print copies of itineraries with the 800numbers for your airline, and othersthat fly the same route, just in caseyou have to rebook from the airport. The paper-free option? E-mail thosenumbers or enter them manually intoyour smartphone.
* Check airline Web sites for delaypostings. New rules mandate thatairlines have this information online.Alternatively, you can go to www.
flightstats.com.
* Make sure you can access youroffice and home computers in theevent you are stuck while traveling.Free and inexpensive programs likeLogMeIn (www.LogMeIn.com) makeit quick, easy and secure to accessfiles, calendars and applications fromany computer, smartphone, netbook oriPad with an Internet connection.
* Enlist a friend or family member whoknows their way around online travelsites, and keep them on your mobilephone speed dial. If you have to makealternative plans, they can probably do
it faster than anyone.
* Remember travel insurance. A fewextra dollars tacked onto the price
of your trip can provide peace ofmind if you have to change plans forunforeseen reasons. Check what yourairline, travel agent, booking site andcredit cards offer to make sure thatyoure covered.
* Have fun. Many airports are addingluxuries like spas, high-end restaurantsand even showers to keep passengershappy. Find out what your airport, andthe ones that you will visit, offer beforeyou go, so youre able to enjoy them tothe fullest.
While there is no surefire guaranteefor disruption-free air travel, a littleadvanced planning can go a long way-- even all the way to your destination.
FOUR TIPS TO LEAD YOUR
DOG TO BETTER HEALTH(NewsUSA) - Just like people, dogsfeel much better when they are healthy. But unlike people, dogs cant take careof themselves. To keep your favoritefurry friend on the track to wellness andbetter living, follow these tips:
* Exercise builds efficient bodies.Nothing makes a pooch happier thana stroll through the neighborhood. Andwhile your dogs satisfying his curiosityby sniffing trees and bushes, hes alsoburning calories. For more intensephysical activity, try throwing someballs or frisbees. This should makeyour dog run a little harder, helping
expand lung capacity and tone muscle. No matter what activity you choose, your canine companion will enjoythe benefits of regular exercise while
forging a stronger bond with you in theprocess.
* Protect your smiles. You probablyremember to brush your own teeth, but doggie dental care often goesby the wayside. For dogs that aretemperamental about pet owners orvets touching their teeth, a simple andeffective solution can be found using anew type of probiotics, called TeddysPride Oral Care (www.MyTeddysPride.com), that has been designedspecifically for the oral care needs ofdogs and cats. These probiotics canbe used in addition to brushing or as astand-alone oral care routine.
* Read food labels. Unlike people, dogs cant read food labels. Theyare dependent upon their owners togive them the best possible nutrition.
For dogs, make sure that the firstingredient listed is, for example,Chicken, not Chicken Flavor or DogFood with Chicken -- items that list thename of the meat contain 95 percentof that ingredient, while the withdesignation means that the food onlycontains 3 percent of chicken or beef.
* Visit the vet regularly. Similar topeople visiting the doctor, dogs needregular veterinary care. Every doghas potential health risks it mustguard against -- and many risks varyaccording to dog breed. Your dogsveterinarian will let you know whenrecommended vaccinations are due,
give proper care to keep your doghealthy and notify you about potentialhealth risks and treatments.

Where do you gofrom here?
Its a common misconception that only car dealerships can perform the
maintenance services on a new vehicle that is under warranty. Clearly,
consumers can have their maintenance done by their local independentrepair shop without affecting the warranty.
