LAMPREY TREATMENTS
WONT AFFECT
MUSKEGON RIVER
MUSKEGON COUNTY EllieKoon wants to set the record
straight about the U.S. Fish andWildlife Services decision tochemically kill sea lamprey larvaein two tributaries of the MuskegonRiver. The lampricides being usedwill only affect Brooks Creek inNewaygo County and CedarCreek in Muskegon County twofeeder streams that are a part ofthe Muskegon River system, saidKoon, a fish biologist in charge ofthe project. The Muskegon River
itself will remain unaffected, sheadded. The lampricide treatment willbegin on Saturday in BrooksCreek and on Tuesday in CedarCreek. Were using a very selectivelampricide at a very lowconcentration that is harmless tomammals and most other aquaticlife, Koon said. The Croton Dam blocks lampreys
an invasive species in the
Muskegon River from travelingnorth of Newaygo, meaning theydont appear in Mecosta County, she said.Sea lamprey larvae live in themud in certain Great Lakestributaries and grow into adultfish parasites, about 18 inches inlength, that suck onto and feedoff fish. A single lamprey cankill 40 pounds of fish within its18-month lifespan as a parasiticdult.
ARE ALLERGIES
CAUSING YOUR BAD
BREATH?
(NewsUSA) - If you find that yoursniffling, sneezing and runnyeyes are accompanied by mouthodor, youre not alone; seasonalallergies are associated withhalitosis, or bad breath.
Bad breath is caused by thesame destructive bacteria thatcause plaque and gum disease. They live in the mouth, wherethey feed on carbohydratesconsumed as food. In a healthy
mouth, these bacteria are keptin check by saliva production.Saliva washes away the bacteria,so they have less time to stick toteeth, eat sugar and emit smellygas as a byproduct.
Allergies, however, can lead todry mouth. Without saliva to flushout the mouth, the bad bacteriastick around. To make thingsworse, many allergy medicationslist dry mouth as a side effect.
Post-nasal drip, which may alsoresult from allergies, can alsocause bad breath. As mucus fromthe sinus cavities moves downthe back of the throat, it providesa food source for bacteria. Post-nasal drip can also becomeinfected, in which case it putsmore bacteria in your mouth.
But those with allergies arentcondemned to a life of smellybreath. Allergy sufferers can takesteps to control allergy-relatedbad breath. For example, if amedication creates dry mouth, patients can ask their doctorsabout other drugs that will treattheir symptoms without causingthe same side effects.
Addressing the sinus issuesthat lead to post-nasal dripcan also help eliminate badbreath. Drinking tea is thought toalleviate post-nasal drip. Nasalrinsing, whether through a netipot or another device, can alsohelp.
Some oral care products directlyaddress the bad bacteria thatcause mouth odor. For example, oral care probiotic mints, such asEvoraPlus (www.myevoraplus.com), flood the mouth with goodbacteria. The good bacteriaadhere to tooth surfaces, leavingless room for bad bacteria togrow. If bad bacteria cant findspace to live on teeth, they cant
survive in large enough numbersto create bad breath.
In fact, these mints have
beneficial bacteria so small theycan easily reach into the pits, crevices and fissures of teeth fordeeper penetration.
TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR
FURNACE READY FOR
WINTER
(NewsUSA) - Frigid days are fastapproaching. And as snow falls
and temperatures plummet, itis important to make sure yourfurnace is in proper workingcondition. Follow these tips tomake sure you dont get left inthe cold this winter.
1. Have your heating equipmentproperly maintained and cleanedby a licensed heating and coolingcontractor.
2. Have the duct work checked
for air leaks. Research showsthat faulty ductwork accountsfor more than 25 percent of theheating loss in an average home.
3. Replace air filters. A dirty filterrestricts air flow and causes theunit to lose efficiency.
4. Use a programmablethermostat. By setting yourthermostat from 72 degrees to 65degrees for eight hours a day (for
instance, while no one is homeor while everyone is sleeping)you can cut your heating bill byup to 10 percent according to theDepartment of Energy.
5. Keep air supply and returnregisters free from obstructions(for example, furniture, rugs, andclothes baskets).
6. Use a whole-home humidifier.Heated indoor air is very dry
and needs to be humidified.Actually, one of the driest placeson earth could be your home.Dont believe it? The relativehumidity of the Sahara Desertis 25 percent; Death Valleys 23percent. In the winter months, theaverage heated home can have arelative humidity as low as 13 to16 percent. The benefits of usingan Aprilaire automatic whole-home humidifier include:
* Comfort -- helps eliminatedry nose and throat and itchyskin, while also reducing static
electricity.
* Well being -- optimum humiditylevels can help reduce the
chance of upper-respiratoryproblems caused by dry air. Askyour doctor.
* Preservation -- properhumidification levels will protectagainst shrinkage and cracking infurniture, moldings and hardwoodfloors.
* Energy savings -- addingmoisture to the air means youllfeel warmer with lower, energy-
saving indoor temperatures. Ahome heated to 69 degree with35 percent humidity feels just aswarm as a 72 degree home at 19percent humidity.
Visit www.aprilaire.com for moreinformation.
SAVE TIME AND MONEY
BUYING YOUR NEXT
REFRIGERATOR
(NewsUSA) - Nearly everyoneis more cautious with moneythese days, so major purchasesare approached with additionalconsideration and planning. Anew refrigerator, for example, cancost hundreds or even thousandsof dollars and may be in yourhome for 10 or more years. Sowhen it is necessary to replace,budget-focused consumersmay first consider the purchaseprice. However, a refrigerators
reliability, energy efficiency, usable features and ability tostore more-affordable bulk foodsare also important factors andcan offset the initial cost.
Since consumers are in themarket for appliances soinfrequently, the purchaseprocess can easily becomeconfusing and overwhelming. The tips and guidelines below willhelp even the most discerning
and energy-minded shoppersnavigate the showroom floor andidentify a reliable refrigerator thatwill meet their needs.
Compare the capacity andstorage. Models with moreshelves and bins have a greatersurface area, which creates morespace for fresh and frozen fooddeals bought in bulk. Considera model that will not only fiteverything, but will also provideeasy access to the most-useditems. The Maytag ICE2Orefrigerator has a bottom mount

TIPS FOR STRESS-FREE
AIR TRAVEL
(NewsUSA) - Man-made andnatural disruptions to air travelare all-too-often the norm. Notonly can weather delay take-offsand landings, but new airlinerules can also keep planesgrounded.
For example, if a plane is sittingon the tarmac for more than three
hours, it has to return to the gate.On the upside, there are ways tocope with the unexpected. Hereare a few simple tips to prepare
for delays before leaving home:
* Print copies of itineraries withthe 800 numbers for your airline, and others that fly the sameroute, just in case you have torebook from the airport. Thepaper-free option? E-mail thosenumbers or enter them manuallyinto your smartphone.
* Check airline Web sites fordelay postings. New rulesmandate that airlines have thisinformation online. Alternatively, you can go to www.flightstats.com.
* Make sure you can accessyour office and home computersin the event you are stuck whiletraveling. Free and inexpensiveprograms like LogMeIn (www.LogMeIn.com) make it quick, easy and secure to access files, calendars and applications fromany computer, smartphone,
netbook or iPad with an Internetconnection.
* Enlist a friend or family memberwho knows their way aroundonline travel sites, and keep themon your mobile phone speed dial.
If you have to make alternativeplans, they can probably do itfaster than anyone.
* Remember travel insurance.A few extra dollars tacked ontothe price of your trip can providepeace of mind if you have tochange plans for unforeseenreasons. Check what your airline, travel agent, booking site andcredit cards offer to make surethat youre covered.
* Have fun. Many airportsare adding luxuries like spas,high-end restaurants and evenshowers to keep passengershappy. Find out what your airport, and the ones that you will visit, offer before you go, so youreable to enjoy them to the fullest.
While there is no surefireguarantee for disruption-free airtravel, a little advanced planningcan go a long way -- even all the
way to your destination.
