Your guide to homes for sale in the Tri-City area of the British Columbia Lower Mainland
Citation preview
The wet, cooler weather ofthese last few days hasprompted many folks to
bring their summer patio tropi-cals back inside.
Actually, late August is thebest time to recall your house-plants vacationing outside. The climaticchange is not too abrupt at that time, andthey will adapt more quickly to inside condi-tions.
Half-hardy plants like fuchsias, geraniumsand lantanas do not like normal householdconditions and since they will tolerate lightfrosts, leave them outside just as long as youcan, probably until the end of October.
Several major problems arise, however, when tropical houseplants come back inside.Unwanted visitors often come back in withthem. Many insects lay eggs on plants, andthese eggs will hatch indoors and begin caus-ing problems almost immediately. It wouldbe wise to spray most of your plants withorganic ‘Safer’s Insecticidal Soap’ or withthe more broad spectrum ‘Trounce’. Spraythree times five to seven days apart. Forscale and other more challenging insects, horticultural oil, used at the growing seasonratio, is also very effective. If you’re not sureif the oil will affect some plants, the rule isto spray a few leaves and wait 24 hours tosee if any burning takes place. We have hadgreat success with organic oils on all kindsof plants with little or no problems. Be sureto use the growing season ratio.
It is more difficult for plants to adapt to ahousehold climate, rather than to an outdoorenvironment. You really must create a some-what humid condition around all these plantsuntil they can tolerate the less humid indoorair. This is easily done by placing three to four
long bamboo canes in the pot and drapingclear poly over top of create a mini-hothouse.If you mist the foliage with warm water twoto three times daily, you will be able to removethis tent in about seven to ten days.
This may seem like a lot of work and canlook a little tacky, but it will make a tremen-dous difference in the quality of your plants. The secret to good maintenance on all plantsduring winter is plenty of light, lower roomtemperatures and proper watering. Allplants will need higher light intensity dur-ing the short, often cloudy, winter days, soplace them near indirect light, such as nearwindows on the north or east side of yourhome. Not only is it more economical to runyour house temperatures lower, it is alsomore beneficial to your plants.
Most tropicals will tolerate a low of 55 F(10 C) but 62-65 F (16-18 C) is most preferableduring winter. If your furnace comes on lessfrequently, the air will be more humid. If youcan, leave the summer fan running on yourfurnace for better air circulation. When youwater all your indoor plants, water themthoroughly with warm water. The secret is toallow the soil to become dry before you wateragain. By picking up your plants and feelingtheir weight, you will instinctively know ifthey need water.
Also, plants love to be root bound, sodon’t repot them in large pots with volumesof soil. Try this approach on your indoorplants, and I’m sure you will notice a tremen-dous difference.
As far as other outdoor plants are con-cerned, leave them outside as long as youpossibly can. Slips and cuttings can be takennow, but ‘mother plants’, especially thosenear the house, can often stay out until thefirst real cold spell. You can protect themfrom heavy frosts with protective coveringslike the new insulating clothes now avail-able.
