nered with the world-renowned researcherJeannette Haviland-Jones, PhD, of RutgersUniversity, on some ground-breaking re-search to examine the effect of flowers onhuman emotion and well being. Over a 10-month period, some very interesting resultswere discovered.

Haviland-Jones and her research teamfound that the presence of flowers triggershappy emotions, heightens feelings of lifesatisfaction and affects future behaviourin a positive manner far beyond what isnormally true. Flowers are a natural andhealthful moderator of moods. “Commonsense tells us that flowers make us happy”,says Dr. Haviland-Jones, “and now scienceshows that not only do flowers make us hap-pier than we know, they have strong posi-tive effects on our emotional well being.”

Here are five main points as condensedfrom her report:

• Flowers have an immediate impact on

happiness. Study participants expressedtrue or excited smiles upon receiving flow-ers, demonstrating extraordinary delightand gratitude. This reaction was universal,occurring in all age groups.

• Flowers have a long-term positive ef-fect on moods. Study participants reportedfeeling less depressed, anxious and agitatedafter receiving flowers, and demonstrated ahigher sense of enjoyment and life satisfac-tion.

• Flowers make intimate connections.The presence of flowers led to increasedcontact with family and friends.

• Flowers are a symbol for sharing. Thestudy explored where in their homes peopledisplayed flowers. Once received, arrange-ments were placed in areas of the home thatare open to visitors — such as foyers, livingrooms and dining rooms — suggesting thatflowers make the space more welcomingand create a sharing atmosphere.

• People who buy more flowers are hap-pier. Once learning the study results,participants in all ages and gift categoriesreported that they would be buying moreflowers in the future.

This may seem like a bit of promotion forthe floral and horticultural industry but Ithought these results would be interestingto everyone.

With so much stress and depression intoday’s world, it’s great to know that some-thing as simple as a bouquet of flowers canhelp to cheer someone up — a nice thoughtjust before Valentine’s Day.
