As the fall fades into theshorter, darker, wet-ter and cooler days of

winter, we’re all looking toadd some brighteners to ourgardens and containers. Weneed plants that have some bril-liance, toughness, hardiness and blend wellwith other winter colours. Some of the mostoverlooked plants are the ornamental kalesand cabbages that are used so much aroundthe world but not so much here.

Part of the challenge is heavy winter rainson some of the very full headed varietiesplanted out in the open. If these same variet-ies are placed under the eaves of our houses,they will stand up very well. There are,however, varieties that will thrive out in theweather. Fringed varieties, like the ‘Coral’ and‘Peacock’ series, are ideal because rather thantrapping water they allow water to simply flowthrough. They come in white, pink and deeppurple for an exquisite show. I also find thatthe later planted, smaller headed varietieshave rather loose heads and do not hold water.The smaller four inch pots are ideal to mix inwith containers and established plantings.

The secret to having them look their bestis colour blocking them together in groups.Whites, pinks and purples look so good to-gether and create a brilliant winter display.Complementary companions are winterviolas, pansies and dusty miller. Evergreen

grasses, such as carex, acorus and fescues,blend beautifully with ornamental kaleand cabbage and make great focal points.Flowering kale is also a great accent for ev-ergreen ground covers and looks fabulous asunderplantings for trees and winter flower-ing shrubs like viburnum ‘Pink Dawn’.

Hardiness is often more of an issue out inthe Eastern Valley where exposure to extremecold wind chills can cause their demise. Kalewill take a good deal of frost, but when we getfrost in excess of –10 degrees C. they’ll havesome challenges. By using either ‘Remay’ clothor the far better ‘DeWitt N-sulate’ when we getthose severe outflow northeaster winds, youcan keep them looking great. If we get a cover-ing of snow before the severe cold, that wouldbe an even better insulator. The newly intro-duced kales - ‘Red Bor’ (a ruffled deep purple),‘Winter Bor’ (a green version of ‘Red Bor’)and ‘Laciniato‘ (a green-silver showpiece) - arethree shining lights. If they have sun, they cantake –25 degrees C. in their stride. All three aremagnificent. Classy and elegant, they light upa winter garden. Curiously, they are also edibleand delicious when they’ve had a little frost,and for special occasions, they make a greatdecoration on a plate.

There’s a wide selection of ornamentalkale and cabbage now available in the LowerMainland. As your garden begins to loseits colour, these ornamental and colourfulbrassicas will add fresh new life. Give thema try – it’s a perfect time for planting them.Remember to bury them deep so they looklike flowers popping out of the ground.
