We take many things forWWgranted today, often notWWfully appreciating theWWamount of research, hard work oreven the fascinating history be-hind some of our edible plants.

Take the garden pea, for ex-ample. Our parents and grand-parents planted them, but their history datesback a bit farther — pea seeds were found in anEgyptian tomb at Thebes.

Garden peas or Pisum sativum, are thoughtto have originated in the area around Pisa,Italy where they grew wild. The Greeks andRomans served boiled peas as a light refresh-ment during intermissions at their theatrepresentations. It was a favourite early vegetableamong Europeans and various cultures adaptedlegends about peas. In Britain, a pod containingnine peas was considered lucky. Peas were alsoused as one of the many cures for warts. Eachwart was supposed to be touched with a pea,that was then wrapped in paper and buried. Asthe pea decayed in the ground, the wart wassupposed to disappear. In the language of flow-ers, the pea is a symbol of respect and it’s thebirthday flower of February 17th. The gardenpea we all know and enjoy today, was devel-oped in England and was one of the first cropsplanted in the New World.

Garden peas are one of the most widelygrown and most healthy of all garden veg-etables. They are rich in nutrients, containingphosphorus, potassium and vitamins A, B and

C. Peas are high in carbohydrates and fortu-nately, low in calories. One cup of peas hasonly 45 calories. They also contain nutritiousamounts of fiber, folic acid, amino acids andprotein.

Peas are a cool crop vegetable and as soonas all danger of heavy frost has passed, theycan be planted. In Scotland, peas were neversown until the first swallow appeared, while inEngland, an old ditty advises to “Sow beans andpeas on David and Chad (March 1st and 2nd), bethe weather good or bad”. Although many goodgardeners plant peas early, you can space theplantings out to enjoy peas right through thesummer.

Peas prefer a well drained, shallow, sandysoil that both dries out and warms up quickly.They also like a new location in the gardeneach year, if possible. Peas do not thrive inacid soil and an application of Dolomite limeis essential for both peas and beans. Also,avoid using compost. Many seed companiesare promoting the use of nitrogen inoculantswith pea crops. These are simply granules oflive nitrogen-fixing bacteria. In general, theyimprove the growth of peas and are supposed toincrease crop yields.

Peas should be planted about 2 inches deepand about 2 inches apart. For maximum spaceusage, plant in wide 3 foot rows, keeping eachrow about 18 inches apart. Raised beds arebeneficial to many garden vegetables and peasare no exception. Soil levels, raised 6 to 8 inchesabove ground level, will raise the temperatureof the soil from 8 to 13 F.

There are a number of good pea varietiesand it can take you several years to try them

all. I’ve seen many old-timers grow beautifulcrops of Telephone Peas on poles, which makesa fine garden feature, but most of us simplydon’t have enough room in a small garden.‘Little Marvel’ is an old dwarf pea that requiresvery little staking. I think, however, that thebest dwarf peas are the ‘Sugar Snap’ varieties.‘Sugar Ann’, ‘Paladio’ and ‘Sugar Daddy’ are

three award winning varieties and their flavouris superb.

Although peas are an early cool crop, theongoing cold weather has certainly delayedtheir start in many gardens. The good news isthey can be planted now and with a bit of betterweather they will grow quickly to provide youwith their uniquely delicious flavour.
