Have you ever wondered why yourChristmas cactus always blooms tooearly or too late for the Christmas

season? The simple answer is that you prob-ably don’t have a true Christmas cactus.

The most popular cactus in our part ofthe world is a ‘Schlumbergera truncata’(or Zygocactus truncatus). This variety isoften called a ‘Crab Cactus’ because of itsflat sharp-toothed leaves. Large, long tubedpetals can appear anytime from Novemberto March and in many cases, it will bloomtwice during this period. The colour rangeused to include only pink, white orange andsalmon, but extensive hybridization has ledto the development of fluorescent pink, scar-let, bright lavender and even yellow.

Zygocactus are easy to grow and requireminimal care. The most important fact toremember is that this cactus comes from therainforest, so for its ultimate performance inyour home, you must treat it like a rainforestplant. Unlike traditional cacti, ‘Zygos’ lovehumidity. They also need very well drainedsoil, otherwise their roots will quickly rot.To produce a November-blooming crop,commercial growers take their cuttings inMarch or April when the daylight hoursbegin to lengthen. Usually three cuttings arerooted in a small cell pack using either sandor a perlite and sand mix. They root rathereasily. All three cuttings are then planted infour inch pots with very well drained soiland placed in a warm humid greenhouse toencourage fast growth.

By the end of September, the plants areusually developed well enough to be saleable,but they must first be brought into bud andbloom. The trick here is to give them shorthours of daylight (very much like poinset-tias) and cooler temperatures. Growers canspace out the blooming periods simply bycontrolling both the amount of daylight andthe temperature. By making sure the plants

have natural hours of darkness starting inmid-September and by maintaining nighttemperatures of 55°F (12.5°C) one crop canbe brought into flower in late October. Theblooming of the second crop can be delayeduntil November or early December by keep-ing the temperatures higher and by addingnight-time lighting. To get this second cropto flower, it too must be cooled and given lessdaylight hours prior to the desired bloomingtime.

It’s important to know these details be-cause many folks who have ‘Zygos’ can’t getthem to bloom. This is usually because theirplants are kept year round in a very warmroom and their house lights are left on lateat night. To have success, these conditionsmust be adjusted.

The other common problem with theseplants is blossom drop. It is important toremember that these cacti need not only welldrained soil, but also a humid environmentfor the blossoms to fully develop. Don’t beafraid to mist them daily with warm waterand it really helps to place them on a saucerwith gravel and water underneath. As forwatering, give them a good drink of warmwater, then let them dry out between water-ings. Never keep the soil too wet or too dry.

If it is the real Christmas cactus you areafter, they can be hard to find. The correctname for this variety is ‘Schlumbergerabridgesii’. They only come in a rosy redcolour and their leaves are smooth andspineless, unlike the Zygocactus. They needthe same care as Zygocactus, but they usu-ally bloom bang on for Christmas
