Hardy winter colour is agarden ‘must have’ andthe new hardy, early

blooming varieties of ChristmasRose (Helleborus niger) ‘Jacob”and ‘Josef Lemper’ top the list.Their vibrant white bloomsbrighten any dark winter landscape and theycan even be used inside as cut flowers for afocal point on your Christmas table. Widelyavailable, they’re in bloom now and make awonderful living gift.

Winter berries add so much interest to awinter landscape. The most valuable is thedeciduous winter holly called Ilex verticillata.Its stunning winter red berries are in highdemand for wreaths, outdoor baskets and con-tainers and for indoor centrepieces. I love thestems just as they are in a glass vase indoorsor out on the patio. You need both male and fe-male plants to get these beautiful bird friendlyberries and today, good growers have plantedboth in one pot for immediate planting.

Wintergreen (Gautheria procumbens) is abeautiful low evergreen ground cover withrich deep green leaves, is almost continu-ous flowering and has edible red berries.Available in smaller pots, they make won-derful winter focal points in containers oras companions for white winter heather orChristmas Roses.

Growing a little taller, a wonderful crabapple, called Malus ‘Red Sentinel’, makes agreat clean spring flowering screen or smallshade tree. Its vibrant shiny large red fruitssparkle in winter. It’s like no other smallertree as it’s loaded with hard fruits that arenice to enjoy on the tree, as cut branchesin your outdoor décor or as a garnish onChristmas dinner plates. A frost or two willmake them edible.

A prickly little plant that survives nicelyoutside in our toughest winters is a dwarfslow growing Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus‘Christmas Berry’). It berries up nicely byitself, spreads slowly and beautifully compli-ments any of its outdoor companions, likedwarf colourful conifers and low goldenheathers. They look spectacular by them-selves in clay pots with a few blueberry twigstucked in.

Traditional holly trees have all but disap-peared in our smaller space gardens andwhat a shame. To the rescue comes a new self-fertile, compact, hardy (zone 6) holly called‘Red Beauty’. It grows only 5-7 feet tall and 4feet wide, making it a great focal point, con-tainer plant or a fabulous hedge. ‘Red Beauty‘presents a new opportunity for holly in thelandscape. It’s a keeper.

Most camellias are rated as zone 7 plantsand need a little protection in the coldest win-ter conditions, however, one stands out fromall the rest. Camellia ‘Yuletide’ is a beauty. It’sa sasanqua camellia which means it blooms

from late November through April with purered blooms that have vibrant yellow anthers.Talk about ‘the’ Christmas outdoor plant. Itcelebrates Christmas all by itself.

Amaryllis has become the ‘hot’ plant thatcan be started as a bulb now to bloom forChristmas or can be purchased as a grownplant ready to bloom. It is now popular ascut flowers used to celebrate the season, Ilove putting the stems inside a tall glass vasewhere they look so elegant and last a longwhile if kept cool.

The newest plant to adorn our indoorsis the beautiful ardisia. We’ve grown theseplants for a month now. The new growthhas burst into soft green leaves that make anice contrast to the rich dark ones and to thedelightful red berries that adorn the lowerportion of the plant. Ardisias are going to bea winter classic for years to come – so watch

out poinsettias.Finding a true Christmas cactus that most

of our grandmothers had in their homes50 years ago is hard, but not impossible.Schlumbergera bridgesii is a smooth leafedcactus with hot pink flowers that actuallybloom only at Christmas. It’s an heirloomplant that is so easy to grow and is handeddown from generation to generation. Start anew tradition in your family this year.

Another wonderful old tradition is to have‘Paperwhite’ narcissus in our homes for theholiday season. For some people, they havea love-hate relationship with the spectacularperfume of ‘Paperwhites’. Like amaryllis, theirlong flower stems look stunning in a tall clearglass vase. You can still pick up bulbs that willbloom for Christmas if you keep them cool ina fancy glass dish with water and some colour-ful stones on the bottom and started plants arealways available at this time of year.

If you do any Christmas cooking, bayleaves are a must have to flavour meats.We have a ten footer outside our door thatwe enjoy both as a landscape plant andas a source of fresh leaves all year round.Cut stems add interest and fragrance toChristmas wreaths. They’re a little hard tofind at this time of year, but herb growershave them. Treat it as a cool winter lovingplant that needs to be outdoors all year roundwith a little winter protection in severe cold.It could become one of your most loved gar-den plants.
