TREASURES OF MELANESIA, PAPUA NEW GUINEA &
THE SOLOMON ISLANDSWith Special Guest Lecturer Jared Diamond
A b o a r d t h e D e l u x e L’A u s t r a lAugust 25 – September 14, 2018
A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR NHMLA FELLOWS
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to invite you to join me on the inaugural expedition of NHMLA Journeys. Exclusive to members at the Fellows level, this new travel program will take you far beyond L.A. to experience firsthand the wonders that inspire our researchers’ incredible work. In August 2018, we will set sail with legendary UCLA anthropologist and NHMLA research associate, Professor Jared Diamond, for a special voyage of discovery to the Coral Triangle—Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands—aboard the small luxury expedition ship L’Austral. The natural and cultural history of this region is so rich it is difficult to know where to begin to describe it.
The islands in the heart of the Coral Triangle comprise the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world. Their history is filled with battles for control of the valuable spices—cloves, nutmeg, mace—that were once grown only here. During World War II, the islands were a major theater of conflict. The cultures of the indigenous peoples have fascinated western scholars for generations. It was here that Margaret Mead conducted the interviews that led to her influential study of Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies. The region also inspired our special guest lecturer, Jared Diamond, who developed the themes of his Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel during the time he spent among the people of New Guinea.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles has an extensive collection of materials from this part of the world, due in significant part to the generosity of John Ward Williams (New Guinea) and William Preston Harrison (Solomon Islands). These fascinating artifacts played a key role in research of the Coral Triangle from the 1930s to the 1970s. This August 2018 voyage offers members of the Museum an opportunity to see in person the places and cultures that produced these treasures, all while in the company of one of the world’s most acclaimed scholars.
I hope you will join me on this incredible journey. For more information, please contact Dominic LoBuglio, Major Gifts Coordinator, at 213-763-3348 or [email protected].
Warmest regards,
Lori Bettison-Varga President and Director, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
Papua New Guinea
Professor Diamond says of this Expedition: “I’ve been visiting New Guinea and the Solomon Islands for 52 years. I keep going back—29 times so far—because, in my unbiased opinion, they are the most fascinating area of the world! Nothing can match them for human diversity, beauty, and biological richness and interest on land and in the water. The only disadvantage of visiting New Guinea and the Solomons is that, once you have been there, all the rest of the world will seem to you boring by comparison. I’m looking forward to sharing with you my pleasure in New Guinea and Solomon Island people, languages, birds, coral reefs, fish, and World War Two history. I’ve been telling my wife Marie about that part of the world ever since we met almost 40 years ago, but she has never been there. Now, at last, I will be able to show Marie, and you, why I keep returning.”
GUEST LECTURERSJARED DIAMOND, a globally renowned ecologist, evolutionary biologist, and professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles, is the author of Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed and Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize. The recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Genius Award, the National Science Medal, and research prizes and grants from the National Geographic
Society and the American Physiological Society, he has won many teaching awards and has been elected a member of leading U.S. national scientific and academic honorary societies such as the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.
DR. BETTISON-VARGA, PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR, arrived at the Natural History Family of Museums in October 2015. She oversees NHMLA in Exposition Park, the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum in Hancock Park, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall. Her immediate goals include advancing the outreach and education around urban nature and citizen science, as well as the re-imagining of the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, where
visitors can make connections between Ice Age Los Angeles 50,000 years ago, and climate change today.
A geologist who received her PhD from the University of California, Davis, Dr. Bettison-Varga served six years as President and W.M. Keck Foundation Presidential Chair at Scripps College in Claremont, California. There, she enhanced the visibility of the college, implemented policies to foster greater transparency and community engagement, initiated strategic planning for diversity and sustainability, and inaugurated a comprehensive capital campaign.
