The outreach program signed up over 1000 people during August and September who took a survey about their commuting behavior and received a ten ticket book of RTD passes in exchange, particularly to try the 83L bus that serves the corridor. The corridor campaign was funded with a competitive federal air quality grant, and aimed to reduce car traffic along this congested corridor, specifically during Denver's summer ozone season. Throug September 16, eligible participants received a free RTD 10 ticket book or a $20 voucher to be used towards a monthly transit pass, t encourage current drivealone commuters to try using transit for their work trips. Participants also had the opportunity to log their alternative trips to earn another 10 ticket book.

Students At Steele ­ Walk to School Day 2012

Despite the 100 degree days and insane weather we've been having,Fall is here, and with Fall comes Walk to School Day. Walk to SchoolDay 2013 will be held on October 9th, and many area schools arealready gearing up for the event. For 11 years, TransportationSolutions has been assisting local schools with their Walk and Bike toSchool events by providing banners, stickers and raffle prizes. This year Transportation Solutions will be assisting with at leasteight schools:

Last year Transportation Solutions won a bike rack from the NationalCenter for Safe Routes to School and Saris Racks, which we donatedto University Park Elementary. The rack was installed in time for thebeginning of this school year, and University Park will be having adedication ceremony for the rack on Walk to School Day, in honor ofMary Myers, a local Safe Routes to School advocate who passedaway this year.

Bicycle Commuter Matching Pilot Program Expands

Following the success of the inaugural Bike Buddies pilot project withemployees and residents along the Cherry Creek Trail,Transportation Solutions expanded its program in a second phase,focusing on the employment hub surrounding Kaiser Permamente, atParker and Iliff. All Bike Buddies participated in a safety clinic andrecreational rides with the group, as well as will receive individualroute planning for their commute and practice with their Buddies. The Bike Buddies program is a part of the Smart MovesAlong Leetsdale­Parker Corridor campaign, which aims to increasethe use of non­drive­alone travel along the corridor, from 1st andUniversity in Denver to Parker and I­225 in Aurora.  Throughout the program, the new riders expressed increasedconfidence in navigating roads, route planning and bike maintenance ­ all essential skills for the successful bike commuter. We are nowtaking lessons learned from these two campaigns to explore optionsto expand to other areas. If you are an employee and would like toparticipate, email Alex Mehn at [email protected] Transportation Solutions plans to expand our Bike Buddiesprogram throughout our service area in 2014. Keep an eye ontransolutions.org/bikebuddies for more information!

High School Bike Safety Pilot ProjectAs more and more young people in Denver areturning to their bikes to get around, we thinkhigh school bike safety education is crucial tomake sure that high school students know howto bike safely and drive safely around peopleon bikes. AAA Colorado thinks so too. That'swhy, starting this fall, AAA Colorado andTransportation Solutions are teaming up topilot a High School Bike Safety Program inlocal schools. The pilot program is expected tolast two years, after which we hope our findings will be used to aid inthe creation of high school bike safety programs across the state.

Participants learn about travel options during August 18th Fair Throughout the summer, Transportation Solutions has been workingto implement a Travel Training program in Glendale and thesurrounding Denver area to help older adults and people withdisabilities gain better information about transportation and theiroptions along the Leetsdale/Parker corridor. A fair was held at AlliedJewish Apartments for both residents and non­residents to attendand gather information about their transit options and the process oftaking transit. An out­of­service RTD bus was provided in order forpeople to practice getting on and off the bus in a stress­freeenvironment.  Following this try transit event, Transportation Solutions also held apresentation at Allied Jewish Apartments to give information abouthow to ride the bus and what the participants needed to know inregards to getting a pass, how to get where they are going, and theirrights as a rider. Transportation Solutions is committed to providing travel trainingevents throughout Southeast Denver. If your employer, residencehub, or community center is interested in 'trying transit,' email AlexMehn at [email protected]

 RTD's feasibility study of the demand for future transit service alongthe southeast corridor from Denver Union Station to Cherry Creek andGlendale is in full gear this fall, including a recent meeting held July31st with more than a dozen the study's stakeholders, including VisitDenver, hotel interests, and Golden Triangle neighborhood andbusiness community leaders. Another stakeholder meeting is plannedfor late October or early November. Transportation Solutions iscurrently working with the study staff to gather information onprojected travel demand in the corridor and potential alternativesoptions for meeting the demand. A draft of the study will be availablelater this fall and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.The lead study consultant is Transportation Management & Design(TMD), based out of Carlsbad, California (www.tmdinc.net), whichserves as RTD's ongoing General Planning and Operations Consultant.TMD's lead project manager for the study is Zodin Del Rosario and hecan be contacted at [email protected] or by calling 760­476­9600.  The lead staff person for Transportation Solutions working on thestudy for is ED Rich McClintock, who can be reached by calling ouroffice at 303­377­7086 or emailing [email protected]. As part of the study, Transportation Solutions has written abackground white paper on the potential demand for increasedconnectivity in the corridor. A copy of the white paper can be foundhere: Denver Union Station_Cherry Creek_Glendale_Corridor_WhitePaper
