Spelling and grammar mistakes are the quickest way to make a bad impression – they imply laziness and can confuse the reader. Never trust your PC’s spelling and grammar function - it can’t identify all errors, so always check your CV.

Be clear and concise in your writing style. Long, over-complicated phrasing can be confusing. Short and simple sentences are more manageable and easier for the reader to digest.

WHAT I WILL BE DOING FOR YOU – OUTLINE

Leave this section blank on your master CV. You should never save or copy and paste this section. The following notes will help tailor your text for each pitch in 125 words.

It’s important for clients to fully understand what you will be doing for them. It’s your opportunity to show them your individual value. What are your role, responsibilities, areas of focus (if you can be specific) and reporting lines? Are you the clients main point of contact? If so, tell them. Use section to demonstrate your hunger for the instruction by telling the reader why you want to work on the project. This should never be copied and pasted, as every project and client is different! Readers will tell if you really want something, so spend time perfecting this.

RECENT EXPERIENCE

Use this as a space to save all of your recent projects for the last 12-24 months. Put a reminder in your diary to up-to-date your list every month or so. The list should run off the edge of the page – when you come to pitch, you should choose three of the most relevant projects you have worked on.

BACKGROUND AND CURRENT ROLE AT CBRE

Keep this section to 160 words max. You should include:

1. Background – a few lines on what you did prior to CBRE or, if you have been with CBRE for a long time, a short description of what other roles and responsibilities you’ve had within the company

2. Current role – what you currently do at CBRE and the service(s) you provide. Where possible, include areas you currently specialise in and if you have space, include a recent, relevant, headline example

WHAT I WILL BE DOING FOR YOU – EXAMPLE TEXT

“My number one priority as your Project Director will be to ensure that day-to-day project management is undertaken to the highest standard with correct resourcing levels applied. Ultimately, I will ensure your 100% satisfaction with the services received.

Communicating your aims and objectives to the whole CBRE team starts with me. I will be responsible for the interface between the CBRE project team and the overall [client] project steering team to ensure integrated service reporting.

Key elements of my role include attending key stakeholder and steering meetings and being the immediate point of escalation.

This project is a fantastic opportunity to apply my existing experience to achieve the best result for [client] and to develop a long term relationship with the [client] team and business.”

TIP: Once complete, find somewhere to read your content out loud. Physically do this as it will identify errors and issues with sentences & phrasing. Reading aloud forces you to read your content rather than recite it from memory. Try reading from bottom to top as a further check.

“Only 7% of what you say is verbal” - Remember, what you say isn’t the only message you send to the reader. The same message can be given a completely different meaning by changing the way you say it.

Brands are powerful when bought regularly by valuable clients. The strongest brands have a clear set of values, beliefs and behaviours. Consistency is the first step towards achieving this.

A brand is much more than advertising, promotion and logos. It is everything we say and do. CBRE is built on core principles. We offer insightful expertise, seamless delivery and value relationships. We are smart, spirited and helpful and speak progressively, with authority and in a straightforward manner.
