A QUESTION was asked at the ”New Comers“ wine & cheese, last month: Q. Why is there an immediate $100 fine if a vehicle is parked on our streets or driveways during a snow storm? A. It takes the vendor a considerably longer time to remove or plow snow off a driveway or a street, when they have to go around a parked vehicle and be careful not to damage it. Thus elongating the time each resident has to wait for their area to be plowed. With no vehicles in the way the wait time is shorten.

SNOW REMOVALFor our newer residents and perhaps a reminder to all the others, here is some information about snow removal— • The Association has no responsibility for storms 2 inches or under. It is what actually accumulates not what fell. • In a large storm, every 5 to 6 inches of accumulation, the vendor will plow our streets, to facilitate, so if need an emergency vehicle can get close to your home. Any type of an emergency situation in your home at anytime, should be dealt with by making a call to 911. In most cases within 2 hours after a heavy snow fall ends, the vendor will begin clearance. The tractors and shovels and snow blowers are stored on site on the clubhouse lot.

In most storms there are 3 crews working, in extra heavy storms a 4th crew can be implemented. A crew consists of 1 truck with a plow, 1 tractor with a bucket and blade, and 4 ”hand shovelers“ usually at least one hand shovelers has a snow blower, the rest have shovels. The ideal driveway and home sidewalk clearance takes place in the following manner . The plow truck clears the center of the driveway from the street, pushing it to the "back up" area. The truck leaves. A tractor comes and pulls the snow from behind the garages into the "cleared" center of the driveway. The plow truck returns and pushes that snow to the backup area. Hand shovelers clear your home sidewalks and some edges around your property. These processes sometime happen back to back and sometimes happen several minutes apart. In fairness we ask the vendor to start driveway clearances in different locations in each successive storm, thus no one is always first and no one is always last. • Any damage caused by the snow removal or other snow removal issues should be reported promptly to our property manager ,not the Board. • It is an extremely unsafe situation to be out on our driveway, while your home driveway is being cleared. Please stay inside. • Early November is a good time to carefully look around the outer edges of your driveway and sidewalks and if there are any items that maybe in "harm's way" when snow needs to be removed, remove the item now! Be aware the vendor is not held responsible for damage to ”pathway“ lights.

RECENT MEN'S CLUB ACTIVITY n Berny duBin, Men's Club Co-Chair

THE MEN’S CLUB recently had a couple of events—both were very successful. The first was a dinner speaker at Geogine’s. There was an FBI agent that spoke for an hour and then answered questions. The second event was at the Clubhouse and he is one of our residents, Bernie Hoffman who is in demand and speaks all over the country. His topic was “What is going on in this country with all the shoot-ings, and what are the signs of a person that is going to be a mass shooter.” He was very informative but because of the topic it was depressing. Unfortunately the Men’s Club events are only open to mem-bers of the Men’s Club and sometime to the men’s wives. If in the future you would like join the Men’s Club so you can also enjoy these events please call me Berny Dubin 215-674-5916. I would like to thank my wife; Len Jaffee and Marv Bogen for helping by picking up the donuts; the ping pong group for setting up the room; Dave Baver for helping in the kitchen and everyone else who helped put the room back together.

Men’s Club co-chairs: Berny Dubin 215-674-5916, Howard Rabinovitch 215-601-1866 and Steve Warshaw 215-674-4894.

On Tuesday, January 14, 2020 we are going to the Michener Art Museum to see:

IMPRESSIONISM TO MODERNISM: The Lenfest Collection of American Art

Cost is $13 per person, and includes a docent. We will go to lunch after the museum at Piccolo Trattoria in Doylestown (at your expense) We will car pool. Please be at the clubhouse at 9:45 AM. MEET… MATISSE THYBULLEn Jake saMson, The Villa’s VoiCe guesT sPorTs rePorTer

THE 76ERS DRAFTED A GUY who may have the coolest name I have ever heard. Say it with me: Mah-tees Thigh-bull. The 76ers may have made a bunch of moves in the offseason, but draft-ing Matisse may have been their

most interesting. Coming out of the draft, much of the media seemed to criticize the move, as the 76ers were in desperate need of shooting and Matisse was just okay in that regard. However, as we get closer to opening night, the city of Philadelphia seems to be embracing the defensive stud. Thybulle was born in Scottsdale, Arizona to a Haitian father and American mother, moved to Sydney, Australia between the ages of 2–9 before moving back to the Seattle suburbs after that. You may have been able to guess it, but he was named after French painter Henri Matisse. After playing at Eastside Catholic in Washington, he chose to play for the University of Washington, turning down offers from Oregon and Gonzaga.

He was never a guy in college who would go out and drop 25 points, but instead would have games with 17 points—6 steals—5 blocks and lead his Washington Huskies to a victory. Thybulle won the Naismath Defensive Player of the Year Award, the Lefty Driesell

Award (another best defender award) and led the NCAA in steals having 126 steals in 36 games. A rarity, Thybulle stayed all four years at UW, playing in 135 games. I actually watched a decent amount of Washington games last season, really liking how this kid played, and he has already shown flashes of that in the preseason. What I like the most about him is how in a league full of drama queens, he is a rare down to earth person. After being drafted, he got extremely emotional on ESPN, discussing his mom’s long battle with Leukemia that led to her passing when Matisse was 18. It made

him truly a stronger person through years when he had to grow up on his own. To me, it’s really cool

to have an extremely relatable player on my favorite team. I have friends who are 22 years old, play basketball well, and have a knack for photography. However, Matisse will be wearing that #22 on his back at the Wells Fargo

Center. Keep an eye on this guy.

FIVE PONDS SINGLES CLUB n Merryl PelBerg

The FIVE PONDS SINGLES have started off the year with a bang. We saw the show Act Of God at the Bristol Theater. The show was great. Our second trip was a visit to the historic Biddle Mansion in Andalu-sia with a delicious lunch at Calabrisella. Our next show at the Bristol Theater will be in November followed, in December, by a holiday celebration dinner at the Victor Cafe—the famous Italian restaurant in South Philly where dinner is accompanied by beautiful opera sung by the wait staff. The New Year will be started off by going to a performance by the Philly Pops. We have many different outings in the plans. If you are single and would like to enjoy interesting and fun times with friends, come out and join us. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 7 PM in the Ballroom.

MEETING VILLAS AT FIVE PONDS NEWCOMERS n ron dorFMan

ON OCTOBER 3rd, 2019 several dozen newer residents got a chance to meet the Villas at Five Ponds Board members (all five of them), along with the chairs and co-chairs of our numerous club and activity groups. Hosted by a wonderful welcoming committee led by Casey Bauer and friends, they were treated to a buffet of cheese, fruit, and beautifully prepared snacks along with wine and beverages. The warm conversation and smiling invitations to participate in this active 55+ community introduced the “newcomers” and some original resident “pioneers” for the first time and helped establish what will hopefully be new friendships. (More photos on p. 16)
