Pastor’s 2 Cents From: Fr. Jim DeBruycker Having listened to a number of eulogies in my life, not to be too morbid, I started composing my own. I don’t know who, if anyone, will be doing mine, but I hope they are honest and at some point say. “One thing about Fr. Jim: nothing was so small or so big that he could not find time or a reason to whine about it.” At one of my parishes, I went into my office and discovered someone had put up an Annie Engelbreit poster of a young girl glaring at me saying, “Snap out of it!” Of course, that ‘no whining’ poster has followed me all my life. And in my head I can hear the voices of my mother and Sr. Patrice Neuberger saying, “In the time you took to whine about it, you could have done it.” Too true. Ultimately, I hope the eulogist also says, “kicking and screaming, he finally did the right thing”. Most of our heroes are heroes because they did the right thing-without the procrastination or whining. For us who are of a progressive bent, we are living through liberal hell. We have recently lost some of our heroes: Elijah Cummings, John Lewis, and the ‘notorious’ RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. To many of my brother priests, I’m sure this seems like divine retribution. To an ideologue, they were the personification of evil, but you can’t deny that they walked it like they talked it, no matter the pain they endured -the very definition of courage and heroism. I believe in today’s Gospel Jesus is talking about that inner dialogue about how to act. He uses himself as an example. Even though every- thing he did (and does) pointed to justice, the power structure did not change or recognize his message. The so-called dregs of society at least recognized his message and who he was/is. At the heart of this inner dialogue is the Golden Rule…and empathy. Can we so resonate with each other that we can feel the state of their journey? Part of the power of the recent protest movement is that empathy. The vision of the violence became so powerful it was felt. Why now? is a question we can only conjecture about, but it is the gateway to asking, How do we act to bring about the change we want to hap- pen? and Are we willing to act? To do unto others as we would have them do unto us also asks a lot of questions: Why do we have so much and they so little? If others should have a share in our riches, are we (if we must) willing to part with some of ours? How many of our gripes are real or just culture wars? Of course, all of this is tempered by the ubiquitous question: What would Jesus do? 6 Days until Imagination Cabaret 2020 Watch: 7pm Saturday, October 3. Pastor’s 2 Cents From: Fr. Jim DeBruycker

Having listened to a number of eulogies in my life, not to be too morbid, I started composing my own. I don’t know who, if anyone, will be doing mine, but I hope they are honest and at some point say. “One thing about Fr. Jim: nothing was so small or so big that he could not find time or a reason to whine about it.”

At one of my parishes, I went into my office and discovered someone had put up an Annie Engelbreit poster of a young girl glaring at me saying, “Snap out of it!” Of course, that ‘no whining’ poster has followed me all my life.

Even though every-thing he did (and does) pointed to justice, the power structure did not change or recognize his message.

Why now? is a question we can only conjecture about, but it is the gateway to asking, How do we act to bring about the change we want to hap-pen? and Are we willing to act?

To do unto others as we would have them do unto us also asks a lot of questions: Why do we have so much and they so little? If others should have a share in our riches, are we (if we must) willing to part with some of ours? How many of our gripes are real or just culture wars? Of course, all of this is tempered by the ubiquitous question:

The Importance of Gratitude: In these challenging times in which we live, I have found a practice which is helping me stay balanced and relatively happy. The practice – Giving Thanks! We have a choice either to focus on what we lack or how really terrible life is or to focus on what we have and how much we have been given. What’s your choice? Research has shown that people – regardless of age – who have a regular practice of expressing gratitude are healthier and happier. Also research has show that young people who regularly give thanks do better in school and have fewer headaches. And what are you grateful for? ~Mark Scannell

will hold each other in prayer. COVID has ravaged poor communi-ties in Guatemala and - with your assistance - members of our Sister Parish in TN II have been providing their community with emergency food and medical supplies. All are most welcome to join our walk. And bring a lunch, too. This year's theme is "We are called". We are called to solidarity and action in these times of crisis. At Sister Parish, we feel called to stand by our communities in prayer and friendship. Please join us for our annual Solidarity Walk and reflect on how we have, and will continue to, build this community, despite borders and walls. FFI, contact [email protected] or [email protected].
