Immediate Past President

Mike Saltzman

Co-President’s Message - Alyssa Simon

It is my honor to begin my term as

Co-President of SJC. Mike

Saltzman left me big shoes to fill.

I hope to make him proud. I look

forward to continuing the journey

with Co-President Buddy Feldman

by my side.

January was a very busy month at

Seaside. On January 7, Debby

Markow and the social committee

arranged our annual opening

dinner. Despite the cold and

snowy weather outside, Big Fish

Grill was filled with over 80

longtime and new members. Then,

on January 20-21, we welcomed

Rabbi Hannah Laner, the second

of two candidates for our

Religious Leader position. The

search and worship committees

and the Board will now be

discussing the next steps in our

process for hiring our next

religious leader when Rabbi Beth

retires early this summer.

January is also the month for

everyone to pay their membership

dues. Thanks to all who have

already paid. For those who

haven’t yet paid, invoices were

mailed out on January 16. It would

be extremely helpful if you could

pay as soon as possible, so that we

can continue to count you as a

member. Our continued growth is

an important theme that drives us.

As I’m writing this, our

congregation has already gained 9

new members since the New Year.

Great things are coming to SJC.

Please check the newsletter or our

website calendar for all events at

SJC. I am sure you will find

something of interest, whether it is

worship services, adult education

classes, or social activities.

Membership Committee The Membership Committee

kicked off the 2018 calendar year

with a planning meeting on

January 16. We stuffed envelopes

for the dues mailing and then

discussed plans for the coming

year. We are searching for a

person or people to lead this

committee. Anyone interested

please contact Pat or Ed Simon at

302-424-8020…no prior

experience required.

Our first event will be New

Member Shabbat on Saturday

April 21, at our regular Saturday

morning Shabbat service. This is

always a great way to meet our

new members and show them how

warm and friendly our

congregation is. We are delighted

to hold this event and celebrate the

continued growth of SJC. You

won’t want to miss this great

function. Please mark your

calendars.

Our next meeting will be held on

March 20, at 7 p.m. in the SJC

building. All are welcome.

Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an

SJC event but thought you couldn't

afford it? SJC policy is to work with

you if you have a financial hardship.

Please contact the treasurer to

confidentially discuss your situation.

House Committee Addresses Building Expansion Since the Annual Meeting in

December, the House Committee

has been busy with the

preliminary planning for the

building expansion. We’ve

ordered a preliminary site plan and

architectural plans that will be the

basis for further decision making

and planning. These will not be

ready before late February, at the

earliest. In the meantime, the

committee is focusing on

developing a wish list of building

improvements that can be used in

estimating costs.

Some changes we are thinking

about, beyond the expansion of the

sanctuary, are relocating the

kitchen to the lower level, having

a multi-purpose room that would

be partially dedicated to a youth

lounge, and improving access for

all of us, but particularly those

needing easier access in and out of

the building.

In order to better understand the

community’s building needs, the

Board authorized the committee to

proceed on two fronts:

First, we will prepare a survey that

attempts to identify the needs and

desires of all of our members.

Some “wants” should be obvious

and clearly needed, others are

desirable if at a reasonable cost,

and still others are really nice but

beyond our present resources. The

survey will be forwarded by an

email (or mailed to those who

normally receive this newsletter in

the mail) that explains and reports

on the process thus far. When it

arrives in the near future we

encourage everyone to take a

moment to check off the likes and

dislikes. This information will

form an important basis for the

future planning process.

Second, the Board will host an

open meeting for the entire

congregation to discuss the ideas

for expansion. The results of the

survey will be available by then,

and we should have some initial

ideas flowing out of the

preliminary plans. All of this will

be presented and open to

comment, criticism, and

(hopefully) some praise. Look for

more on this in upcoming

newsletters.

If you want to see the report of the

Ad Hoc Committee that examined

SJC’s present and future space

needs as reported on at the Annual

Meeting, it is posted on the SJC

website (see top of page 1 for the

URL) under About Us > News

A Taste of Mussar Each month, on the second

Thursday of the month, at

7:30 p.m. at SJC, we study one

virtue or soul/character trait

(middah) that is part of Mussar, a

spiritual discipline within Judaism.

However, there will not be a

Mussar class in February.

Class will resume on Thursday,

March 8, when we will study the

middah of Awe/Fear - Yirah,

Chapter 24, from our text,

Everyday Holiness by Alan

Morinis. Yirah is the last of the 18

middot discussed in the text. After

six years of a regular monthly

Mussar class, Rabbi Beth will

facilitate her final Mussar class on

Thursday, April 12. This last class

will include a review of our

personal middot, and discussion of

some of the concepts in the

opening and closing chapters of

the text - The Inner World of the

Soul and The Route.

Book Review The Adult Education Committee

recommends A Smile in One Eye,

A Tear in the Other by Ralph

Webster. The author chronicles

the experiences of his relatives

caught in the Nazi regime.

Patriotic Germans and faithful

Lutherans, never attending to the

fact that they had Jewish

forebears, their world falls apart

when they are identified as Jews.

The book tells the story of how his

family struggled to survive. Even

those who manage to flee find

themselves without a home or

country to call their own. The

author has woven this story of his

relatives with the struggles that

modern refugees face every day.

The People’s Law School On Sunday, February 18, at 3

p.m., at SJC, SJC member and

lawyer, Jeffrey Rosen, will present

an overview of Law and the Court

System. The class will begin with

a discussion of what is law, the

sources of law, and how law and

facts operate to resolve disputes.

We will define different types of

law and the associated courts. We

will cover Jewish law from the

Torah, including the Ten

Commandments, through the

Mishnah and beyond, concluding

with a discussion of the Bet Din,

the Jewish Court required in every

Jewish community under

Talmudic law. Then, on March 18,

Retired Judge Joan Churchill will

discuss Immigration Law. These

sessions will include insights

about secular and Jewish law on

the given topic. Those who attend

a minimum of three sessions will

receive a certificate of completion.

Join us for informative and

interactive discussions about how

the law affects you.

Haftorah Sessions On February 26 and March 19, at

3 p.m., at SJC, the Haftorah Class

will study I Samuel 15:1-34 and

the associated Maftir,

Deuteronomy 25:17-19. Prepare

for a precursor to "Game of

Thrones," as the Prophet Samuel

strips the kingship from the

shoulders of King Saul for failure

to obey a divine command. This

Haftorah, with its Maftir, are

collectively known as "Zachor”

(Remember). It is the essential

prelude to Purim and is read on

the Shabbat before that holiday.

We will consider a litany of

questions that have fascinated

Jews over the ages: Who were the

antagonists Samuel and Saul?

What was the sin of Saul? Can

failure to follow a divine

commandment to commit

genocide be a sufficient basis for

deposing one’s whole dynasty?

What might this story have to do

with legitimatizing the succession

of the House of David? How does

this story reflect the themes of

authority versus rebellion?

Religious versus civil authority? Is

there evil so intractable it must be

completely eradicated? And what

does any of this have to do with

the joyous and frantic festival of

Purim? Please join us.

Alfred Gross Scholars Shabbat Mark your calendars for April 14-

15 for the annual Alfred Gross

Scholar weekend. The Adult

Education Committee, in

conjunction with the Youth

Education Committee and the

Religious School, has invited

Charles Richter, Director of

Theater at Muhlenberg College, to

lecture on Jews and TV. And we

are doing something different this

year – having a Saturday

afternoon and Sunday morning

event! Professor Richter’s initial

presentation will be on Saturday

afternoon, followed by Havdalah

and a buffet dinner. On Sunday

morning, he will continue with a

presentation oriented towards our

religious school students, teens,

their families, and others.

Parking at SJC Please park on the hard asphalt strip

closest to the building only if you

have difficulty walking on the gravel.

That way, the strip is available for

those who need the firmer surface to

walk safely.

Page 5: Seaside Jewish Community News February 2018lead the discussion on Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik. In April, Susan Towers

Religious School News The religious school had its winter

break, then a snow day, and then

was closed for the Martin Luther

King, Jr. holiday weekend.

January 21 was the first time

they’ve met since December 17.

So, no news to report. The

students are looking forward to

celebrating Tu B’Shevat with our

annual Seder and lunch on

February 4. See page 1 for details.

Purim Celebration Mar 4 Our annual Purim celebration will

be Sunday, March 4, at SJC. At

11 a.m., our religious school

children will perform a new Purim

"Spiel." for the congregation that

our teens are writing. We will then

read the Megilla and enjoy a

potluck meat lunch. The children

will also participate in arts and

crafts projects and Hamantaschen

baking. This should be a fun day

for both adults and children.

Please come and support our

religious school. You don’t need

to have a child in the school to

attend. Bring a dish to share at the

potluck, and let Joel Simon know

if you plan to attend the lunch and

what food item you wish to bring

by contacting him at

[email protected] or

302-245-1386.

BBYO SJC’s teens have been trying hard

to get their BBYO group off the

ground, but the weather has not

been their friend. Several activities

were cancelled, including a

meeting with a staff member from

BBYO. Please watch future

newsletters for their further plans.

Oy Vey, 5K! SJC is excited about our 6th Oy

Vey 5k, 1 mile walk, and kids

race. The event will be on April 8,

at 9 a.m., with race day

registration beginning at 8 a.m.

We are again partnering with

Seashore Striders to host a

fantastic day of fun and fitness.

We hope you will consider

running, walking, volunteering,

sponsoring, and/or supporting the

race. Complete the registration

form on page 11 if you want to

participate in the race. Complete

the sponsor form on page 10 if

you are willing and able to support

the race financially. Both forms

are also available on our website

under About Us – Newsletter.

All proceeds benefit SJC's

educational programs. To

volunteer or ask questions, contact

Joel Simon at 302-245-1386 or

[email protected]. We

need your help with the following:

Sponsors. Your business has a

unique opportunity to support our

race. As a sponsor your business

will be represented in race

materials and displayed

prominently on our race shirts.

Please complete the sponsor form

and mail it to SJC.

Volunteers. Volunteers will be

crucial the morning of the race.

We will need help with set up,

parking, registration, food prep

and service, the water stop, and

directing traffic.

Chefs and Bakers. Anyone who is

able to make a dish for the post-

race party would be a big help.

This has always been a highlight

of our race. Runners always

compliment SJC for the food at

the after party. We feature kugel at

this event and would love one

donated from you, but any dairy or

parve food is fine.

We hope that many of you will

join in the excitement as a

participant, sponsor, volunteer, or

all three! Let's build on the

success of the last four years’

events and make this one even

better.

Passover – Not Far Away Passover begins at sundown on

Friday, March 30 and continues

until sundown Friday April 6, (or

Saturday, April 7 for those who

observe 8 days). SJC has two

opportunities to honor and

celebrate this most important

festival of freedom from our

history and in Jewish life today.

As has been SJC’s tradition from

our very start in 1997, we will

have a community Seder on the

second night of Passover, on

Saturday, March 31. Reservations

(via a ticket purchase) are required

and cannot be made any later than

March 23. See the flyer on page 9

with all the information as to

location and cost and how to

purchase a ticket. The form is also

available on our website under

“Worship.”

The last day of Passover is also

one of the four times a year when

the Yizkor memorial prayers are

said to honor the memories of our

loved ones. On Friday evening,

April 6, we will hold our regular

first Friday of the month service

and include the Yizkor memorial

prayers. We hope you can join

with us to celebrate the festival.

Hag Sameach–a joyous festival.
