• Sidi Ahmed Tijani Mausoleum (C8)Situated close to the Qaraouiyne Mosque, this mausoleum was built in memory of the famous saint, Sidi Ahmed Tidjani (died in 1815), founder of the most important Islamic brotherhood in West Africa. The numerous African disciples of the Tijaniya Sufi order never fail to visit the mausoleum to renew their

commitment often coming to Fez after their pilgrimage to Mecca.One «Wadifa» is almost kept daily after the 3rd prayer of the day (Al Asr).• Chouara Tanneries (C8)

The Tanneries are one of the great attractions of Fez medina. They were built in the middle Ages near the Oued Fez River which provides water needed to work the skins. This Tannery is the largest of the three tanneries still existing in the medina and is composed of numerous pits

filled with dye solutions of various colors. Craftsmen use plant derivatives, such as tanin, and lime to treat the cow, sheep and goat skins used to produce a variety of leather goods.

• Complexe Nejjarine (C7)It is about one of the most beautiful urban and architectural complexes in Fez. This complex, organized around a place (Saha) consists of a foundouk (today museum of the wood), of a fountain and a souk. The name of

complex derives from its specialization in the products of joinery and from artistic cabinetmaking.

• Funduq Nejjarine-Wood Museum (C7)Museum of traditional wood-working: built in the 18th century, it served as a warehouse and commercial centre of precious goods. This two-story monument was magnificently restored in order to house woodworking

museum.Open every day from 10:00 am until 17:00 pm. Admission is charged.

• Nejjarine Fontain (C7)The Fountain extends the funduq towards the center of Nejjarine Square and is an important component of the urban architecture of the Square. Built in the mid-19h century, this charming fountain is the most complete

example of a typical Fassi public fountain. The facade is fully decorated, composed of wooden awning, an arch adorned with polychrome Zellij mosaic tile, sides with carved plaster, and a rectangular basin.

• Souk Henna (C7)The «souk Henna» occupies partially the location of the famous Maristane founded in 1286 (Psychiatric hospital where - the music therapy - was put into practice) and quoted in the work of Amine MAALOUF « Léon the African » and become one of the oldest souks of the Medina, specialized in the sale of traditional cosmetics and pottery items.

• Seffarine Square (C8)This is one the most interesting sites in the medina because it contains one of the oldest crafts in Fez: copper work. Craftsmen still work copper and brass to make utensils such as teapots, trays, goblets and pots.

• Medersa Seffarine (D8)Was raised in the year 675 of the Hegir, (1276) by Sultan Abou Youssouf Yaacoub. It represents the first one medersa of the merinide time in Morocco, the minaret confers it a distinguished character.

• The Mellah (Fez Jdid) (G3)This is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Morocco. Besides the recently restored Ibn Danan Synagogue (from the XVII Century), visitors can still see the originality of the architecture of this area with is characteristic narrow

alleyways, and the balconies and large windows of decorative wood. One can also visit the Jewish cemetery to see the white tombstones, arbors and the panoramic view of the surrounding hills.

• Bab Al Makina (E4)Located at the north side of Fez Jdid, Bab Makina used to be the main entrance to the royal palace. It is composed of two plazas called «Mechouar», where official ceremonies, such as receptions for ministers or diplomats, were held. Today,

this light-filled space, with its beautiful gates, is the evening setting of the sacred Music Festival held in early June.

• Boujloud Square (E4)At Boujloud Square, the main Boujloud Gate was built in 1912, next to the original 12th century gate, and is now one of the main entrances to the medina. It is composed of one central arch side. The exterior façade is decorated with green

zellij, with blue zellij on the inner façade. Walking toward the gate, looking through the central arch, one sees the beautiful minaret of the Bou Inaniya Medersa and the Sidi Lazaz Mosque.

• Bab Boujloud (D5)At Boujloud Square, the main Boujloud Gate was built in 1912, next to the original 12th century gate, and is now one of the main entrances to the medina. It is composed of one central arch side. The exterior façade is decorated

with green zellij, with blue zellij on the inner façade. Walking toward the gate, looking through the central arch, one sees the beautiful minarets of the Bou Inaniya Medersa and the Sidi Lazaz Mosque.

• Jnan Sbil Garden (E4)Considered to be a ‘breath of fresh air’ in Fez, in the gardens hold an admirable collection of plants, as well as an interesting hydraulic infrastructure for fountains and irrigation. • Batha Museum (E5)

This ethnological museum holds the largest art collection of Fez. Covering a surface of approximately 4400m², the palace is composed of two distinct buildings linked by a riad built in typical Andalusian style. The bonatical garden at

the centre of the palace and the courtyard decorated with zellij cover 60% of the total surface of the monument. The Museum is opened every day from 9:00 am until 17:00 pm (except Tuesday). Admission is charged.

• Borj Nord (B5)This fortress now holds the Arms Museum, with weaponry from many different origins displayed chronologically in 11 rooms. Ranging from pre-historical items to cannons, hatchets to halberds pick hammers, lances and a great

collection of hand – engraved swords, Indian weapons inlaid with gold and silver, Malaysian Kriss daggers, Iranian helmets, decorated saddles, a varied collection of pistols, and different types of cannons. Open every day from 9:00 am until 17:00 pm except Tuesday. Admission is charged.

• Borj Sud (B5)The fort was constructed on the southern heights of Fez by the saadian Sultan Ahmed El Mansour in 1582, at the same time as Borj Nord. From this ideal location, visitors can get a panoramic view of the Fez medina.

AROUND FEZ Fez is strategically located at the edge of Middle Atlas Mountains, a crossroads of all four corners of Morocco, amidst a wealth of cultural and natural diversity. This is one of the reasons that the founders decided to build Fez

in this location in the 9th century. The surrounding countryside represents rich cultural heritage of this region, including several villages of great interest. Volubilis is the most important Roman site in Morocco. Moulay Idriss is a picturesque town with green roofs overlooking the ruins of Volubilis, founded by Moulay Idriss, a descendant of the Prophet, who brought Islam to Morocco. Sefrou holds some of the most significant remnants of the Jewish culture in Morocco. There are amazing troglodytes (cave houses) in Bhalil. Nothing is more exceptional than the cedar and oak forests in the regions of Azrou and Ifrane. From Fez it is also possible to visit the thermal springs at Sidi Hrazem and Moulay Yacoub.• Souk Attarine (C7)A market for spices and perfume• Seffarine Quarter (C8)A market for copper products• Pottery Quarter (E11)Located on the road to Oujda, beyond Bab Ftouh, Aïn Nokkbi consists of many cooperatives that produce and sell pottery and ceramic items. • Medersa Sehrij (D9)Founded by the Merinid Sultan Abou-l-Hassan between 1321 and 1323 A.D, this medersa was named after the basin (Sehrij) at the centre of its courtyard. Its layout, architecture and rich decoration of the interior

facades illustrate the beauty of Arabo-Andalusian art.

• Medersa Attarine (C8)Founded by sultan Abdou Said Othman between 1323 and 1325 A.D, this medersa is named after of the neighborhood where it is located, the spice sellers’ (attarine) souk. The courtyard is surrounded by

two narrow galleries decorated with zellij (traditional tiles).

• Medersa Bouinaniya (D5)Built between 1350 and 1357 A.D, Medersa Bou Inaniya is composed of a mosque and a medersa. It is characterized by its marvelous marble columns with decorated capitals. The Medersa is opened every day from 9:00 am until

17:00 pm (except Friday from 9:00 am until 11:00 am and from 14:00 pm until 17:00 pm). Admission is charged.

• Mosque/University El Quaraouiyine (C8)A symbol of the religious and spiritual history of Fez in particular and Morocco in general, the Qaraouiyine Mosque was founded in 859 by Fatima El Fihri, a religious woman from the city of kairawan in Tunisia.

The building was first expanded in 955-956 and again in 1135 by the Almoravid sultan Ali Ben Youssef, who restored this mosque to its current dimensions. Its minaret dates from the first period. This monument has many noteworthy architectural and decorative elements, including its mihrab, sumptuous Almoravid plaster cupolas, decorative arches, Saadian pavilions, bronze chandeliers transformed from church bells, and the precious Almoravid minbar. It is one of the largest mosques in North Africa (17,000m²), and can hold up to 20,000 people..This mosque was also the first university in the world, (founded before the European universities of Bologna, Oxford and Sorbonne) where multidisciplinary courses were offered. For many centuries it remained one of the most important intellectual centers of North Africa. Student, who could take courses from the most reputable teachers in education, sciences, justice, grammar, theology and Islamic Law. Starting from the 14th century, the university acquired a library of more than 30000 volumes, including 10.000 manuscripts. One of these manuscripts was written by Ibn Rochd (Averroes) in 1320, and another manuscript, «El Muqqadima», written and presented by Ibn Khaldoun himself, is one of the most famous manuscripts in the Arab world.

• Mosque and Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss(C7)This sacred and venerated site contains the tomb of moulay Idriss II, the founder and patron saint of Fez. It is visited by people from Fez and pilgrims from all of morocco. It was restored by the Alaouite sultan Moulay

Ismaïl, who decorated it with a beautiful pyramid-Shaped dome.
