In marking the forehead and hands of the sick with holy oil, the Church continues the healing ministry of Christ and offers support and strength to those who suffer. In the hundred baptisms we celebrate in this parish each year, those about to be baptised are strengthened by an anointing with the oil of Catechumens. This oil will also be used with Dannella and Ali on Holy Saturday morning as they make their final preparations for Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. After infants are baptised, they are anointed with the fragrant oil of Chrism. This oil will be used again when they are confirmed. Over a hundred year-three children will receive this sacrament for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in October this year. The Chrism is also used to ordain priests and bishops and to crown kings and queens. Anointing with this oil is a sign that we are set apart for a special task – the task of being followers of Christ (a title which actually means ‘the anointed one’). These three holy oils are blessed and consecrated for the diocese each year by the Archbishop at the beautiful Chrism Mass. If you have never been to the Chrism Mass, this is your opportunity. It will take place in the Cathedral next Thursday 11 April at 7.00 pm. It gives those who attend a broad experience of the pastoral ministry of the Church. Why not bring your children who will be confirmed this year to see where it all begins? See you there! The newly blessed oils will be received into the parish on Holy Thursday evening and placed into our crystal bottles for use in the sacraments in the coming year. Fifth Sunday of LentCOME TO THE CHRISM MASS

Just a month ago, we celebrated the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. In marking the forehead and hands of the sick with holy oil, the Church continues the healing ministry of Christ and offers support and strength to those who suffer.

In the hundred baptisms we celebrate in this parish each year, those about to be baptised

are strengthened by an anointing with the oil of Catechumens.

Anointing with this oil

is a sign that we are set apart for a special task – the task of being followers of Christ (a title which actually means ‘the anointed one’).

Best wishes

CATHOLIC PSYCHIATRIC PASTORAL CARE is looking for more Pastoral Carers to work in their ministry across the main psychiatric hospital, The Park at Wacol and in chaplaincy services. Interested parishioners are asked to please take an information booklet about the ministry at this weekend’s masses from our parishioner, Sophia who is already a Pastoral Carer with the organisation.

VOCATION VIEW: Lent is a time of being serious about forgiveness and knowing that we too are loved. Who will step forward to tell of God’s great love for us? Pray for Vocations. To speak to someone about your calling contact the Vocation Centre on 3324 3351.

A sense of humour is a gift from God. Laughter unites us One Easter a priest and a taxi driver both died and went to heaven. St.

Peter was at the Pearly gates waiting for them. 'Come with me,' said St.

Peter to the taxi driver. The taxi driver did as he was told and followed St.

Peter to a mansion. It had everything you could imagine from a bowling

alley to an Olympic size pool'. Oh my word, thank you,' said the taxi

driver. Next, St. Peter led the priest to a rough old shack with a bunk bed

and a little old television set. 'Wait, I think you are a little mixed up,' said

the priest. 'Shouldn't I be the one who gets the mansion? After all I was a

priest, went to church every day, and preached God's word.' 'Yes, that's

true.' St. Peter replied, 'but during your Easter homilies people slept.

When the taxi driver drove, everyone prayed!'

NO PARKING please on the paved area in front of the church ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS POLICY – The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm. They are to be treasured, nurtured and protected from any harm – Under the Archdiocese’s guidelines, volunteers engaging in ALL ministries are required to complete the training – Safeguarding Essentials (Level 1 approx. 25 min.) We ask ALL VOLUNTEERS to complete this at your earliest convenience. Please go to www.safeguardingaob.com.au to view the presentation. Following this, completion of Applied Safeguarding Training (Level 2) is REQUIRED FOR THOSE VOLUNTEERING IN MINISTRIES INVOLVED WITH CHILDREN AND/OR VULNERABLE ADULTS. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for our session - 7pm TUESDAY 7 MAY in the Parish Hall. Register at the link: https://www.trybooking.com/BBMEC (CODE: eastbrisbane) and advise the parish office, thank you.

BE A GOOD EGG THIS EASTER - The Social Justice committee draws your attention to the good news that there is now slavery-free chocolate available in many places. It tastes delicious and is

no more expensive than other chocolate. Try ALDI, Haigh’s, OXFAM and leading supermarkets. Look for chocolate that has one of these three symbols.

THANK YOU. The Lent Event last weekend was most successful. Sixty people enjoyed a relaxed evening together in the parish hall. The $5 contributions given at the Event and at the church door means that we can send a cheque for $1000 to Blind Eye, a Catholic ministry in South Brisbane which provides a drop in centre for the homeless. Sincere thanks to the Parish Pastoral Council and the Social Justice Committee, particularly Brenda Hawke, John and Jane Stapleton.

St. James Parish, Coorparoo are hosting Jeff Cavins who will present “Life on the Rock and Understanding the Mystery of the Bible” Sunday 5 May 12noon-5pm. Please bring a plate to share, drinks will be provided. RSVP to Sonny on 0421 437 752.

ENTRANCE HYMN

GOD OF DAY and GOD OF DARKNESS

God of day and God of darkness, Now we stand before the night; As the shadows stretch and deepen, Come and make our darkness bright. All creation still is groaning for the dawning of your might, When the Sun of peace and justice Fills the earth with radiant light.

Show us Christ in one another, Make us servants strong and true; Give us all your love of justice, So we do what you would do. Let us call all people holy, Let us pledge our lives anew, Make us one with all the lowly, Let us all be one in you.

COMMUNION HYMN

BE STILL FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD

Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here;

Come bow before him now with reverence and fear: In him no sin is found we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.

Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; He burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned; How awesome is the sight our radiant king of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.

Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place; He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace; No work too hard for him in faith receive from him. Be still for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

RECESSIONAL HYMN

WE WALK BY FAITH

We walk by faith, and not by sight: No gracious words we hear of him who spoke as none e’er spoke but we believe him near.

We may not touch his hands and side, Nor follow where he trod; Yet in his promise we rejoice and cry “My Lord and God!”

Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, And may our faith abound; To call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found.

That when our life of faith is done in realms of clearer light we may behold you as you are in full and endless sight.
