Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed a profound teaching by Jesus on stewardship. What belongs to Caesar? What belongs to God? Christian stewards recognize that every-thing they have belongs to God. God created them, and God has claims on every part of their existence. They also realize that the sovereign is an institution whose nature and purpose is to promote the common good and protect the welfare of its citizenry. As long as it accomplishes this mis-sion while treating every single person with deep respect, justice and compassion, it merits the steward’s support and cooperation. Christian stewards know what belongs to the Lord, and they are better citizens when they live their lives according to his Gospel.

Monthly Adoration Hour for the Ladies of the Parish

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the power of evil in the world? Do you ever feel helpless to make a positive change and wonder what you can possibly do that would actually make a difference? The good news is that prayer is a tremendously powerful weapon against the forces of evil. Spending time with God, especially in Eu-

charistic Adoration and prayer, can change your own heart and the hearts of those for whom you intercede. Inspired by this hope, we are starting a once-a-month Saturday morning hour of Adoration and prayer for all the ladies of the parish. During this hour of Eucharistic Adoration, we will pray a rosary for an end to abortion, euthanasia, human trafficking, geno-cide, and all other forms of abuse and exploitation of people throughout the world. We will also pray a Chaplet of Divine Mercy in reparation for our sins and the sins of the world. We invite you all to join us in this time of spiritual combat against the powers of darkness. It is a marvelous op-portunity to grow closer to God and to build up His kingdom on earth. We will meet on the first Saturday of the month from 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. in the daily Mass chapel. If we have enough ladies, we will move to the main church. Our next session will be on Saturday, November 4. Bring your ro-saries, and we look forward to seeing you there.

An invitation . . . October 29, 2017

Please join me on this special day, Priesthood Sunday, in praying for our priest in praising God for their courage and their generosity. As your bishop, I urge you to make your appreciation for your parish priest known. A simple note, a smile or a phone call to assure him of your lov-ing care and gratitude for his pres-ence in the life of your local church will go a long way to serve the greater good of our wonderful and growing Catholic Church.

Would you kindly address the issue of donat-

ing to charities? I’m sure others receive re-

quests for money from many different or-

ganizations. I feel guilty discarding letters

with pictures of starving children, when I

eat well.

I have the same di-lemma. I live in the richest country in the world. I could live much more simply and dispose of all the income I don’t need. But to do so would require a substantial change in lifestyle and would undoubtedly be viewed by many as irresponsible. Some are called to live a life of radical giving and radical poverty. Others— most of us—are called to live simply according to our circumstances and needs. We’re called to be generous, but we’re also expected to plan for the future, provide for our families, and seriously accept the other responsibilities before us. It is not necessary to respond to every particular need for which you receive an appeal, no matter how needy or worthy it may be. Choose a representative sampling of charities that you feel you can support, and discard the other appeals. Do so in good conscience. If, in the future, you find yourself to be in a situation where you can be even more generous, then by all means choose to do so.

Why Enough Is

Never Enough:

Overcoming Wor-

ries about Money —

A Catholic Perspec-

tive.” by Gregory S. Jeffrey. Through humorous stories and years as a financial manager Jeffrey has found that no amount of money will ever lift a person’s anxiety. Making peace with money entails something other than money. What is needed is the realization of the relationship between our spiritual and financial lives. He asks us to consider some both profound and practical questions. For example, how do we address the temptations against generosity? Have we ever considered there is a battle between mercy and envy and envy is the sin-gle biggest factor that stops people from making peace with money? What is needed to convert our anxiety to trust? At the end of each chapter is one question for reflection and a suggestion for implementing changes in our life to help us make true peace with money. It is a great book to share as a cou-ple. It would make a wonderful first anniver-sary present for yourself or a family mem-bers. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. Have you ever wondered why so many ancient busts of emperors and gods still exist? In any major museum around the world, you’ll see rows of these masterful sculptures. The Vatican Museums have one of the best of these collections. The photo was taken in one of the galleries. Thousands of busts and statues of the emperors and gods were produced for civil use in ancient times. Just like the Ameri-can president’s portrait is in every US embassy, so Caesar’s sculpted form was all over the Roman Empire. For example, a bust would be placed in the town squares of the outlying territo-ries to indicate that a border population belonged to the Roman Empire. The sculptures of Roman gods were also set up in public places around town so that a certain religious unity was pre-served. Being within the empire obliged citizens to pay tributes and taxes, and it assured them of protection. Once the Caesars declared themselves divine, their statue also required sacrifice and worship. The image of the Caesar marked what belonged to him: from land, to money, to people, to prayer. If you were under his image, you belonged to him. We also carry the mark of a divine image that indicates to whom we belong. Each human being is made in the image of God, to be his reflection. We are sculpted and formed to reflect the artist who made us. God gives humans dignity because we are an eternal reflection of God’s free, intelligent, artful, and beauti-ful nature. Our inalienable rights, rooted in our spiritual and ra-tional nature, come from our Creator, as do our duties. No gov-ernment or individual can give or take them away.
