Hannah’s Story Milagro de amor

Hanna is beautiful 14 year old Salvadoran girl, oldest of 5, of a family who has been through many struggles. 3 of the 5 chil-dren are special needs children. Hanna has been nearly deaf for most, or all, of her life. She doesn’t speak and only “signs” a little with her mother. Her mother’s lifelong dream has al-ways been to somehow get some help for her daughter. Help has finally come through the efforts of Dr. Melvin, a lo-cal doctor in Berlin, El Salva-dor, and the people of the Sa-cred Heart Medical Mission. It

was through these people’s efforts and donations that Hanna was able to get a hearing test, a consult with a specialist, and have both ears fitted for hearing aids. You can see her video on Sacred Heart Facebook page as well as the Sacred Heart web-site. Watch her reactions to the first time she is hearing with her new aids. It is a beautiful moment! We just received an email from Milagro, a longtime friend and one of our facilitators in El Salvador in regard to Hanna: Blessings to all the Team of the Medical Brigade, to all the supporters of the Sacred Heart Church that make possible these "miracles" of love.

Hugs, Milagro

We want you to know that you really can and do make a dif-ference in someone else’s life. Thank you very much for mak-ing this possible.

Domestic Church Challenge of the Week

Every week the “Strong Catho-lic Families: Strong Catholic Youth” team will give you and

your family a new way you can promote your domestic church at

home!

After Mass this weekend, you will receive a pamphlet titled “Forty Ways to Foster Prayer in Your Home” by Tom McGrath. Our busy lives offer infinite opportuni-ties to “pray unceasingly”. Take time this week to read through it and pick and one (or more) to do as a fam-ily. Use this week to implement a new type of prayer in your everyday family life!

Look here every week for ways you can promote your Domestic Church!

Catholic Home Missions Appeal Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Mis-sions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dio-ceses in the US are considered home missions be-cause they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s first reading, the four activities of the earliest church are introduced to us as priorities of the church: devotion to the teachings of the apos-tles, communal fellowship, the Eucharist and prayer. The early members of the church saw them-selves as devoted stewards of these activities. These were not options. They were the fruits of a genuine conversion to a life in Christ. Sharing in the Eucha-rist was the most intimate expression of fellowship, while the most common expression of fellowship in the New Testament was that of sharing financial resources – giving. It was not a perfect community, but one that gave evidence of God’s active pres-ence in its midst. This early community offers us an excellent example of how to better exercise stew-ardship in our own parish families.

Life After Loss

“I have lived with you and loved you, and now you are gone.

Gone where I cannot follow, until I have finished all of my days.”

― Victoria Hanley, The Seer and the Sword

Walk for Life “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedi-cated you..” Jeremiah 1:5 The Pregnancy Center of Central Iowa is hosting their annual Walk for Life on May 6th at 9:00 AM starting at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The Pregnancy Center is a local non-profit agency that provides free services to women in crisis pregnancies. They provide counseling, post abortion counseling, parenting classes and material support where needed. They are there to provide loving support to women who might consider abortion as their only other option. This is only one of two fund-raisers held annually. You can help in one of three ways: First: COME AND WALK! First and foremost we

want walkers. By just coming to walk you can be a witness to the sanctity of human life. A witness to the fact that all life is precious in God’s eyes.

Second: Be a sponsor for the walk. Sign up to be a sponsor and collect pledges from family and friends. Many people are more than willing to do-nate a small amount to support this worthwhile cause. If you would like a sponsor sheet please con-tact Lee Mangrich at 641-831-9645.

Third: Pledge to a walker. There will be sign-up sheets in the back of church for anyone who wishes to support a walker. Any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.

If you choose to be a sponsor please come to St. Stephen’s with your sponsor sheet by 8:30 for registra-tion. The walk will go on, rain or shine, so please pray for shine.

Does the Church allow sick and elderly peo-

ple to have “do not resuscitate (DNR)” or-

ders?

Yes. The Church under-stands the hu-

man person as a union of body and soul. Made in God’s image and likeness, we cannot separate our physical life from our spiri-tual life. When our bodies die, our spiritual existence continues. Thus, to believe that we are morally bound to exhaust all possible medical treat-ments incorrectly overemphasizes the good of our physical life here on earth—which our faith teaches comprises, in the end, shadows and dust—and overlooks the good of our spiritual life as well as the eternal destiny to which we are called by God. There comes a time when medical intervention, be-yond that required to keep a person comfortable and to relieve pain, is unnecessary and can excessively burden the patient or the family. Elderly and imminently dying patients are not obligated to undertake unreasonable or excessively burdensome medical procedures or to use measures that sustain life beyond basic nursing care such as proper hy-giene, food and fluids (when they can be assimilated into the body), comfortable room temperature, turning to avoid bed sores, and other means. Having conversations with loved ones about this matter is an excellent way to find support during times of suffering and loss. “Do not resuscitate (DNR)” orders can be part of the process of letting go of the life we have known while embracing the new life that awaits us in Jesus Christ.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s col-umn of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. Julian was an an-choress who lived in Norwich, England in the fourteen century. She greatly desired to under-stand the sufferings of Christ. She wrote in w h a t s h e t i t l e d “ S h o w i n g s ” h o w , through her meditations, God explained the depth of His love for mankind through the life of Christ and the role of the Holy Spirit. Through the cen-turies many persons have been attracted to Julian’s spirituality which is based on a strong personal love of God. She is renowned for hav-ing been the first known person to speak of God as feminine. “ As truly as God is our Father, so truly is God our Mother. What, do you wish to know your Lord’s meaning in this thing? Know it well, love was his meaning…Who reveals it to you? Love. What did he reveal to you? Why does he reveal it to you? For Love.” Julian of Nor-wich’s voice is strong. Her thoughts are clear. Her love for God and His love for us are beauti-fully expressed. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

Divine Mercy Sunday Acts 2:42–47, 1 Pt 1:3–9, Jn 20:19–31

The memory and marks of our sufferings can lead us to lose our peace. For Christ, this is not so. He shows the disciples his wounds and says, “Peace be with you.” It may seem contradictory, but it isn’t. To touch Christ’s wounded side is to touch his mercy, to touch a love that overcomes everything. In spite of my sins wounding him, he comes to me in loving mercy. Jesus’ wounds bring peace. When the apostles see his hands and side, they rejoice. His wounds are a sign that it is really him. No one else has those marks. His wounds are his identification! His wounds bring joy. Thomas misses Jesus’ first apparition, returning and demanding proof before he will believe. Rather than becoming angry, Jesus shows him his wounds. He invites Thomas to touch the signs of his suffering, and Thomas believes. Jesus’ wounds bring faith. We, too, need to insert our hands and hearts into Christ’s side, to come into contact with his love and mercy. Only then can we be healed. Only then can we experience real peace, joy, and faith. That’s why Jesus breathes on his disciples and says, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are

forgiven them” (John 20:22– 23). He wants to heal their wounds and see them produce joy and peace in others. God’s grace is to reach all generations through the power of forgiveness he en-trusts to his Church. The sacrament of penance is exactly that. We acknowledge our sins and Jesus responds with understand-ing, forgiveness, and counsel.

For Reflection How often and how sincerely do you receive mercy through rec-onciliation? How often do you show and share the forgiveness and mercy you have been blessed with?

Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
